Virtual Marginalia Book title: Half Life Author: Hal Clement Posted May 15, 2002 I wanted to like this book. It has everything I like in sci-fi: action, politics, and biological Armageddon. But I didn't like this book. Half Life is set against a background where Earth is in crisis. For 200 years, new diseases have been ravaging the planet. After imploding, the population continues to decline to the point where the sick out-number the healthy. Basic biological research is seen as the only hope for survival of the species. Multiple and on-going efforts are organized to try and untangle the whys and hows of life, in the desperate hope that some clue will lead to a solution to the pandemic. As part of that effort, a mission to Titan is organized to search for pre-life (why Titan? Who knows. It's not really explained). Of a crew of 50, only 2 are healthy, and over half are expected to develop one of the new forms of Alzheimer's before the end of the mission. The story is fast-pacedalmost too fast. Scenes shift quickly with little transition. I had to reread many sections because I lost track of who was doing what. Furthermore, the characters are interchangeable with no real personalities and only their specific illness and job distinguishing them from one another. The presentation of the biological and chemical components of the story is difficult to slog through. There are two possible reasons for this: either the material is over my head or it is inadequately explained. Clement has an M.S. in Chemistry so the former is possible, even though I am a reasonably well-educated person. However, either reason results in an unsatisfactory reading experience.

Harry Clement Stubbs May 30 October 29 ), better known by the pen name Hal Clement , was an American science fiction writer. He was born in Somerville, Massachusetts Clement is widely considered to be a leader of the subgenre hard science fiction He first appeared in print with the story "Proof" in the June issue of Astounding Science Fiction His educational background includes a B.S. in astronomy from Harvard in , M. Ed. ( Boston University ), and M.S. in chemistry Simmons College ). During the World War II he was a pilot and copilot of the B-24 Liberator and flew 35 combat missions over Europe with 8th Air Force. He served in the Army Air Corps Reserve, and retired with the rank of colonel. He taught chemistry for many years at Milton Academy in Milton, Massachusetts Clement received the recognition as a Grand Master by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA). In he retroactively received a Hugo Award for his short story "Uncommon Sense".

Hal Clement (1922-2003) Harry Stubbs, better known to science fiction readers as Hal Clement, passed away in his sleep early in the morning on October 29th. Harry Clement Stubbs was born in Somerville, Massachusetts on May 30, 1922 and grew up in the Boston area. He received a BS in astronomy from Harvard, a M.Ed. from Boston University and a MS in chemistry from Simmons College. Hal entered the Army Air Corps Reserve in World War II, earned pilot wings and lieutenant's commission, and flew 35 combat missions as copilot and pilot in Liberator (B-24) bombers with the 8th Air Force. He was recalled to active duty in 1951, and served as a squadron executive officer and as a technical instructor. He retired from the service as a full colonel. Harry Stubbs at Millennium Philcon in 2001 He taught high school science for forty years, two in a public school and 38 at Milton Academy in Milton Massachusetts, retiring in 1987. Hal published numerous collections and 15 novels. The most recent, Noise , was released by Tor in September of this year. It typifies Clement's imaginative creation of scientifically plausible but weird worlds, a recurring theme of his work. A clean, spare writer with an ability to dramatize complex scientific ideas in a compelling way, invariably leaves the reader with the sense that the universe is a and wonderful place and the laws that govern its behavior equally fascinating and wonderful. Consequently, his work has and inspired a whole generation of scientists and engineers as well as a whole generation of writers. Harry Stubbs, born in 1922, taught high school science for many years; in addition to his science fiction, he writes science articles under his name, and paints astronomical scenes under the name George Richard. He is a resident of Milton, Massachusetts.
