St. Pius X Physics Dr. Clement may be contacted at clementj@stpiusx.org
Tutorials: Wed 3:05 - 3:45 or by appointment in room 102 Physics is the study of matter and energy, and how things interact. The physics course at St. Pius is a course which has been designed to to follow the National Science Standards and uses the best available research based course material. Students learn by doing science rather than by memorizing facts about science. The result is that students gain much better understanding of the physical concepts that are being studied. Also students improve their ability to do critical thinking. The Text is Volumes 1,2,3,4, Leonard et al, published by Kendall-Hunt. It contains a set of explorations that students do in class and finish at home. After some of these explorations students are required to read and take notes on portions of the reader at the back of the book. These are supplemented by Real Time Physics Labs . These are research based labs which have been found to be extremely good at promoting student understanding of physics concepts. Rather than being told what they are supposed to "see" students are asked what they observed, and required to draw conclusions based on their observations. Intensive questioning or Socratic dialog is used to help students understand their observations. Extensive physics education research has shown that these techniques are superior to conventional lecture techniques for all students. Normalized gain in understanding is generally around 10 to 20% in conventional physics courses, but is 30 to 70% when these techniques are used. For more information see the

.....News..... We Remember Harry Stubbs The Last Novel: Noise The Essential Hal Clement Clement Novel: Half Life ... Hal is a SFWA Grand Master! We Remember Harry Stubbs
It is in sadness that we tell you that Harry Stubbs, known to us as SFWA Grand Master Hal Clement, passed away on the morning of October 29, 2003, peacefully in his sleep.
The funeral service was on Saturday, Nov 1, at 10 a.m. at St Michael's Episcopal Church in Milton, MA. We will be updating this website with memories of Harry and his work.

Noise : Hal's Last Novel
Hal's newest and last novel, Noise , has hit the shelves. This is a story about a real water world with floating cities and pseudobeasts, a world colonized by adventurous humans with a heritage of Polynesian ancestry. It is a great read, a wonderful final novel for a man who was the king of world building and who clearly defined the genre of hard science fiction. If you love Hal Clement, you will love this novel.

Clement, Hal (1922-)
Mesklin and some of its inhabitants American science fiction writer (real name Harry Clement Stubbs) and college physics teacher, with degrees in astronomy and chemistry, who speculated in detail about the intelligent life-forms that might evolve on a world of extremely high gravity (see gravitational life ). His books Mission of Gravity Close to Critical (1964), and Starlight (1971), explore the biology and physics of a giant, rapidly-spinning planet, Mesklin, whose effective gravity varies from 3 times (at the equator) to 700 times (at the pole) that of the Earth. Robert Forward presents an even more extreme scenario for gravitational life in his Dragon's Egg and Starquake List of all science fiction entries.

From archive (archive) Subject: Author Lists: Hal Clement From: JWenn.ESAE@XEROX.COM Date: 16 Feb 89 09:57:53 GMT Hal Clement writes HARD hard SF. His science is meticulously accurate. Most of his novels deal with very odd worlds, and the consequences of them (high gravity, low temperature, ...). "Mission of Gravity", "Needle" and "The Best of Hal Clement" are all ones I've read and can recommend. But (as with many hard SF authors), his prose style can grate. Reportedly, his latest efforts show improvement. [C] == Short Story Collection. "My notion of a story is a set of problems."
Hal Clement Stubbs grew up in Greater Boston, attending schools in Arlington and Cambridge, finishing Rindge Tech in 1939. He received his B.S. in astronomy from Harvard in 1943. While at college, Hal had his first science fiction short story, "Proof," published by Astounding in its June 1942 issue. Clement's first novel, Needle , was sandwiched in between wars as a serial in Astounding in 1949. Arguably his best novel was Mission of Gravity which appeared in 1953. Hal was intelligent, experienced, and educated...so he never had a problem selling what he wrote. He let the theme determine the length of his works and wrote a little of everything, seeming to prefer the flexible form of the novel. Among those were Iceworld, Close to Critical, Star Light, Through the Eye of a Needle
