CLEMENT Hal STELLA DOPPIA 61 CIGNY Classici Urania 129 1987 Mission of gravity 1953 tr. Main

14. Who Is Hal Clement?
A brief look at clement's life.
http://www.sos.mtu.edu/pfrc/clement.htm
So, who is Hal Clement, anyway?
Hal Clement (Harry Clement Stubbs), was born in Somerville, MA on May 30, 1922, and grew up in Greater Boston. He attended schools in Arlington and Cambridge, finishing Rindge Tech in 1939. He received his B.S. in astronomy from Harvard in 1943, an M. Ed. from Boston U. in 1946 (G.I. Bill), and an M. S. in chemistry from Simmons College in 1963 (Sputnik panic). Upon finishing Harvard, he entered the Army Air Corps Reserve, received pilot wings and lieutenant's commission at Stewart Field, New York, in March 1944, and flew 35 combat missions as copilot and pilot in B-24 Liberator bombers with the 8th Air force. Recalled to active duty in 1951, he spent eight months as a squadron executive officer at Bolling Air Force Base and sixteen as a technical instructor at the Armed Forces Special Weapons School at Sandia Base, New Mexico. He retired from the service as a full colonel in 1976. His interest in both science and science fiction started in 1930 when he saw a Buck Rogers comic strip featuring a space ship en route to Mars. His father, an accountant unable to answer young Harry's scientific questions, took him to the local (Arlington) public library; he returned with an astronomy book under on e arm and Jules Verne's "Trip to the Moon" under the other. His first story, "Proof", appeareed in the June 1942 issue of Astounding Science Fiction (now Analog) Magazine, and his first novel, "Needle", was serialized there in 1949. His best known story, "Mission of Gravity", appeared in 1953, and has been in print for much of the time since. Other well known novels are "Iceworld", "Close to Critical", "Star Light", and "Still River". "Fossil" was published in November, 1993 by Daw Books. "Half Life" has been accepted for publication by TOR Books.

Tribute to HAL CLEMENT
by Robert J. Sawyer
Hal Clement (the pen name of Harry C. Stubbs) was Fan Guest of Honor at the science-fiction convention Armadillocon 21, held September 10-12, 1999, in Austin, Texas. The organizers wanted Hal to suggest someone to write a tribute to him for the convention's program book, and he asked for me. I was delighted to prepare the following about one of my favorite writers and favorite people. One of the lines was this: "Which would you rather do: solve ten quadratic equations or write a one-page essay on one of Shakespeare's plays?" Golden Fleece ). But no one could blame Hal: it sounded like something he might come up with, and I don't think there's any doubt what Hal's own answer to that question would be. This is a man who revels in science, a man who inspired decades of students with his love of chemistry, a man who pioneered the concept of world-building back, as he says, before slide rules had grown buttons. The last thing I did before I left office as president Analog Half Life , coming this September in hardcover from Tor.)

Hal Clement is the pseudonym of the exemplar of hard science fiction, Harry C. Stubbs. He created the pseudonym while working for his Master's degree in Astronomy at Harvard, fearing his professor would not want him to be "wasting" his time. He did not know that this same professor submitted science fiction to Hugo Gernsback's magazines. Hal's first published story was "Proof" which appeared in the June 1942 issue of Astounding Science Fiction . Then, like many other sf writers, the War intervened. Following bomber combat duty in Europe with the Army Air Corps in World War II, Harry returned home, learned to drive a car, became a high-school chemistry teacher, and wrote Hugo-winning science fiction. Hal is a fixture at many sf conventions, where he always has time to talk to his fellow fans.

ISBN: 0-765-30857-6 check out website: www.tor.com I f you ever want to learn how to create a realistic alien world then one of your first stops should always include works by the author Hal Clement. Kainui is one of a pair of planets of a binary star system. It is a primeval water world with lightning, water spouts and tsunamis all arguing over its 1700 mile deep single ocean. All this noise is defining and if you go outside, you wear a noise-suit suppresser so you can hear yourself speak. Kainui was colonised by Polynesians who leave their floating cities in seed grown boats looking for food and other produce which they can barter with other colonies. Linguist Mike Hoani arrives on the planet and stays with one boat as he hopes it will see him across the world and see how their language has changed since their settlement. Not only have the Polynesians evolved a much leaner body thanks to the low gravity they have also utilised a non-verbal language called 'finger' in which they can communicate without depending on their suit radios.
From the above outline, you should realise that you're not dealing with a standard SF adventure book. A lot of the time, it's really Man against the elements and isn't until the end of the book that they encounter another colony living in the south.

By Tom Long, Globe Staff, 10/31/2003 Hal Clement, whose meticulously crafted tales of alien visitors, life-saving mathematical equations, and man-made "pseudolife" earned him the title Dean of Boston Science Fiction Writers, died Wednesday in Milton Hospital. He was 81. ADVERTISEMENT "Science fiction opens the door to the imagination," Mr. Clement often said. "The main difference between science fiction and the rest of literature is science fiction's higher standards of realism," he said in an interview for an article published in the Globe last October. Mr. Clement taught for 38 years at Milton Academy under his real name, Harry C. Stubbs. He was the author of more than a dozen novels, including a classic of the genre, "Mission of Gravity." The story of a football-shaped planet with varying degrees of gravity populated by sentient caterpillars was first published in 1954 and is still in print. "Mission of Gravity" was described as "the best account of alien life on another planet that I've ever read," by Thomas M. Disch in his book, "The Dreams our Stuff Is Made of: How Science Fiction Conquered the World."
