MT as Samuel L. Clemens
This is a contract between MT and Isabel V. Lyon, his secretary, dated 13 March 1909 it officially names her his literary and social secretary (she had worked for him over half a decade already) just a few months before he fired her. His age shows clearly in his handwriting, but "Samuel L. Clemens" is the signature he uses on almost all the legal documents in the Barrett Collection, no matter when they were drawn up. He didn't use this signature only on legal documents, but I haven't seen it often in any other context.

From Eccentricities of Genius
By Major J. B. Pond
(New York: G. W. Dillingham Company, 1900

This is the long untitled chapter on MT that Pond wrote for his memoir of his career as an impressario. Most of it is the journal account he kept of his 1895 trip across the continent with MT as the producer and manager of the North American leg of the World Tour, which is why it is included in this part of the archive. The two photographs below were published with the text in Eccentricities of Genius . This e-text also contains a number of links to other photographs that Pond took on the trip, as displayed in A GALLERY You can also access Pond's journal entries, city by city, from the HYPERTEXT TOUR SCHEDULE SAMUEL L. CLEMENS Grant: poor, a tanner, small farmer, selling cordwood for a living, with less prospect for rising than any ex-West Pointer in the army; then the greatest military reputation of the age; twice President of the United States; the foremost civilian of the world; the most honored guest of peoples and rulers who ever made the circuit of the earth. "Mark Twain": a printer's apprentice in a small Missouri River town; then a "tramping jour" printer; a Mississippi roustabout guarding freight piles on the levee all night for pocket money; river pilot; a rebel guerilla; a reporter in a Nevada mining town; then suddenly the most famous author of the age; a man of society, with the most aristocratic clubs of America, and all around the civilized globe, flung open to him; adopted with all the honors into one of the most exclusive societies on this continent, the favored companion of the most cultivated spirits of the age, welcomed abroad in all the courts almost as a crowned head. "Peace hath its victories," etc.

Language of the Land: Journeys Into Literary America
Samuel Langhorne Clemens , popularly known as Mark Twain, was born November 30 , 1835 in Florida, Missouri and spent his childhood in nearby Hannibal . Twain is best known for the novels set in his boyhood world beside the Mississippi River, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and his masterpiece, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn As a young man, Clemens worked as a typesetter for his brother Orion's newspaper before following his dream of navigating the Mississippi on paddle wheel steamboats . He piloted boats for three years until the outbreak of the Civil War stopped river traffic in 1861. Clemens joined his brother in Nevada where Orion had been appointed Secretary of the Territory. Roughing It , first published in 1872, is Clemens's account of his journey. In the Prefatory , Clemens describes his writing style: Yes, take it all around, there is quite a good deal of information in the book. I regret this very much; but really it could not be helped: information appears to stew out of me naturally, like the precious ottar of roses out of the otter. Sometimes it has seemed to me that I would give worlds if I could retain my facts; but it cannot be. The more I calk up the sources, and the tighter I get, the more I leak wisdom. Therefore, I can only claim indulgence at the hands of the reader, not justification.

SAMUEL L. CLEMENS (MARK TWAIN) (1835-1910)
by John White Alexander (1856-1915) Better known by his pen name, Mark Twain, satirist Samuel Langhorne Clemens spent much of his youth in Hannibal, Missouri, the Mississippi River town that was to inspire such successes as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
Born in western Pennsylvania, John White Alexander moved to New York City in 1875 to work as an illustrator for Harper's Weekly . After further artistic training at Munich's Royal Academy, he returned to New York in 1881, where he taught, worked as an illustrator, and made a name for himself as a portraitist. In 1891 he moved his family to Paris, where he may have first met Clemens, for it is known that he undertook a portrait of the writer's daughter in this city sometime between 1898 and 1900.
The precise circumstances of Clemens's sittings are not known, but Alexander did remain in contact with the author after he returned to New York in 1902, for he was invited to the writer's seventieth birthday party in 1905. Oil on canvas, circa 1902

By alphabetical coincidence, the Andrews work comes first, and this is the book that presents Clemens in his Connecticut context. Few people realize that Mark Twain, who lived in Hartford after 1871, wrote Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer there. For readers interested in Mark Twain's Connecticut, this is the book to read. The Samuel L. Clemens Center
The Clemens Center opened in 1925 as Keeney's Theatre, a 2,363 seat vaudeville/movie house. A 1950's "modernization" of the auditorium, which was then primarily a movie house, resulted in draping and other acoustical treatments as well as a name-change to the Elmira Theatre; it closed in 1977. The Samuel L. Clemens Performing Arts Center was formed as a result of a community effort, named after Elmira's adopted son, who wrote and is popularly known under the name of Mark Twain. He married a local woman and spent 20 summers in Elmira writing at the family's summer home. The Clemens Center was reopened in 1977 after a renovation which resulted in a seating capacity of 1,650 and became suitable for live performance by removal of drapes and other treatments which deadened the room. The theatre is once again home to Broadway musicals, classical concerts and a wide realm of popular entertainment for the Southern Tier of New York State.
    The Instrument
The organ at the Clemens Center has undergone several trials by water; subsequent renovations have resulted in an instrument quite different from its debut in 1925. The organ was built by the Marr & Colton Company of Warsaw, NY and originally consisted of a three manual console controlling 20 ranks in three chambers (Left, Right and Echo). The stop unification was somewhat limited and seven of the 20 ranks were on "straight" ventil chests.

    78. Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens, Dit Mark)
du Nevada pour y devenir prospecteur dans les mines d argent
    http://www.proverbes-citations.com/twain.htm

    80. Twain, Mark

    http://azar.yvod.com/mej/MarkTwain.html
    Twain, Mark
Mark Twain was the pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, b. Florida, Mo., Nov. 30, 1835, d. Apr. 21, 1910, who achieved worldwide fame during his lifetime as an author, lecturer, satirist, and humorist. Since his death his literary stature has further increased, with such writers as Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner declaring his worksparticularly HUCKLEBERRY FINNa major influence on 20th-century American fiction.
Twain was raised in Hannibal, Mo., on the Mississippi River. His writing career began shortly after the death of his father in 1847. Apprenticed first to a printer, he soon joined his brother Orion's Hannibal Journal, supplying copy and becoming familiar with much of the frontier humor of the time, such as George W. Harris's Sut Lovingood yarns and other works of the so-called Southwestern Humorists.
From 1853 to 1857, Twain visited and periodically worked as a printer in New York, Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Cincinnati, corresponding with his brother's newspapers under various pseudonyms. After a visit to New Orleans in 1857, he learned the difficult art of steamboat piloting, an occupation that he followed until the Civil War closed the river, and that furnished the background for "Old Times on the Mississippi" (1875), later included in the expanded Life on the Mississippi (1883).
In 1861, Twain traveled by stagecoach to Carson City, Nev., with his brother Orion, who had been appointed territorial secretary. After unsuccessful attempts at silver and gold mining, he returned to writing as a correspondent for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. At first he signed his humorous and imaginative sketches "Josh," but early in 1863 he adopted the now-famous name Mark Twain, borrowed from the Mississippi leadsman's call meaning "two fathoms" deepsafe water for a steamboat.
