Lecturer in Human Geography, Loughborough University, England. Lecturer in Human Geography, Liverpool John Moores University, England. Project Leader (Eurostat), Portsmouth Polytechnic, England. Research Assistant (ESRC), University of Bristol, England. Research Interests and current projects My research focuses on new theoretical directions in Human Geography, drawn from the sciences, social sciences, and the arts and humanities. Over the past decade I have been attempting to construct a new way of doing Human Geography, which I have come to call Poststructuralist Geography. My main sources of inspiration have been recent developments in critical human geography-such as structural Marxism, actor-network theory, and post-positivist spatial science-, twentieth-century continental philosophy, and social and cultural theory. I have been especially inspired by the innovative spatial practices of writers such as Jean Baudrillard, Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Derrida, and Jean-François Lyotard. Their reconceptualization of spatiality, temporality, and the taking place of events has enabled me to develop a theoretical practice that permits new kinds of geography which I hope are interesting, important, and effective.

TSAT 's tenth Classic tale was written by London-born author Marcus Clarke (24 Apr 1846 - 2 Aug 1881), whose life was short but very active. In the course of Clarke's 35 years, he emigrated to Australia; he produced a veritable flood of novels, plays, newspaper columns, poetry, historical essays, etc etc; he fathered six children; an anti-Government satire of his instigated a controversy that helped end his career; he earned and enjoyed a reputation as one of Australia's premiere men of letters; and he managed to go bankrupt, not once, but twice. As an author, Clarke was not much given to flights of fancy. Outside of dreaming up improbable coincidences to drive his plots, he seems to have let his literary imagination lie fallow. As well, his fiction consists largely of historical novels and high adventure, mundane genres both. The Haunted Author may be Clarke's least conventional story. Those who would know more of Clarke could do worse than start their inquiries here tsat home classics stories by Marcus Clarke "What can I do for you, sir?" I asked blandly, astonished. He was a tall broad-shouldered man in a rough pea-jacket, and scowled portentously.

    The Impact of Marcus Garvey
By John Henrik Clarke W hen Marcus Garvey died in 1940 the role of the British Empire was already beingchallenged by India and the rising expectations of her African colonies. Marcus Garvey's avocation of African redemption and the restoration of the African state's sovereign political entity in world affairs was still a dream without fulfillment. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941, the United States would enter, in a formal way, what had been up to that date strictly a European conflict. Marcus Garvey's prophesy about the European scramble to maintain dominance over the whole world was now a reality. The people of Africa and Asia had joined in this conflict but with different hopes, different dreams and many misgivings. Africans throughout the colonial world were mounting campaigns against this system which had robbed them of their nation-ness and their basic human-ness.The discovery and the reconsideration of the teachings of the honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey were being rediscovered and reconsidered by a large number of African people as this world conflict deepened. In 1945, when World War II was drawing to a close the 5th Pan-African Congress was called in Manchester, England. Some of the conventioneers were: George Padmore, Kwame Nkrumah, W.E.B. Dubois, Nnamdi Azikiwe of Nigeria, and Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya.Up to this time the previous Pan-African Congresses had mainly called for improvements in the educational status of the Africans in the colonies so that they would be prepared for self-rule when independence eventually came.

It's Been a Long Journey Home for that Darn Cat
Lost calico cat found at West Van SPCA
    by Gwendolyn Richards, Vancouver Sun
Tanis Clarke spent more than $6,000 on colour flyers to find her lost cat, Marcus. Call it the kitty-come-back campaign. It took one year, $7,000, hundreds of phone calls and 35,000 flyers, but a much-loved, six-toed, green-eyed kitty is home. Marcus, a female calico cat from Kitsilano has renewed her habit of lying on owner Tanis Clarke's chest as she watches television or reads. A few scratchy licks to the cheek don't bother Clarke, who is ecstatic to have Marcus home after a year of searching. Even if Marcus is better known for her cantankerousness, Clarke knew she needed to get her back. Marcus' disappearing act began April 2 last year when she and Clarke returned to their Kitsilano home after spending four months in a nearby apartment while repairs and renovations were done. The two had moved out after a chimney fire one night had caused damage to the house. As Clarke went to work that day, she didn't think about Marcus trying to adjust to the strange smells, the workmen who were finishing repairs and their loud equipment. "She just decided to bolt,"

Austin Clarke (1896 - 1974) Letters Biographical Note: One of the foremost Irish poets of his generation, Austin Clarke (1896 - 1974) was born in Dublin and attended University College. He made his living as a free-lance author, book reviewer and broadcaster first in London (1922 - 1937) and later in Dublin. While influenced by Yeats and other Celtic revivalists, Clarke soon developed his own style of writing. This style was much influenced by Ireland's early-medieval Christian culture one he thought was eventually spoilt by the introduction of Roman Catholicism into Ireland. Scope and Content: The majority of the letters in this collection are between Philip Marcus and Austin Clarke. The letters discuss Clarke's views on Marcus' writings as well as his insight on medieval Irish literature and the influence of W. B. Yeats on Irish literature. Provenance: Purchased in April 1997 from Emerald Isle Books, Belfast, Northern Ireland.
