Born in England, his early expectations of a large inheritance were disappointed and it was decided that he should emigrate to Australia where he had connections. He arrived in Melbourne in June 1863. Clarke's literary talents quickly became apparent and by November 1863 he had been published in Melbourne Punch. After abortive attempts at working in a bank and on the land, Clarke settled down to a career combining journalism, literary writing and librarianship. This exhibition aims to provide coverage of these three facets of his life, as well as offering one or two glimpses into his private life. Clarke was always able to earn a living of sorts by his pen.
Ian McLaren has described him as 'essentially the journalist. He was able to sense a story; he was aggressive and combative, ready to translate his thoughts into arresting words that caught the imagination of the public, or aroused antagonism to his views expressed so forthrightly'.1 He was kept busy by the Argus and Australasian, writing leaders and literary articles and reviewing books and theatre. A series of articles, 'Lower Bohemia', about Melbourne low life appeared in the Australasian and were particularly successful, being strong pieces of investigative journalism.

The harsh and inhumane treatment meted out to the convicts, some of whom were transported for relatively minor crimes, is clearly conveyed. The conditions experienced by the convicts are graphically described. The novel was based on research by the author as well as a visit to the penal settlement of Port Arthur. The racy style and constant development of events ensures that this novel will continue be of interes to modern readers. Abstract
The article examines the social and political background to the banning of Marcus Clarke's 'The Happy Land', an adaptation of W.S. Gilbert and Gilbert A'Beckett's burlesque of Gilbert's 'The Wicked World'. The burlesque had been banned in 1873 by the British Lord Chamberlain for its personal and controversial content. Nine years later, many saw Clarke's adaptation as a studied attack on the then 'popular' Liberal government, headed by Graham Berry, at a vulnerable time. Abstract
Australia's most durable novel, For the Term of His Natural Life, places Marcus Clarke at the pinnacle of Australia's literary ancestry. His magnum opus has antecedents in his journalism but few scholars have recognised the extent to which Clarke's reportage influenced his fiction. This paper argues he treated journalism and fiction as companions in language, information gathering, theme and truth telling. arcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 B.C.) was both a Roman orator and statesman. His extensive philosophical interest led him to author several classic philosophical works like "De Oratore" (Hiz 113). Although he was often criticized for lack of originality, few could deny his superiority in rhetoric. Cicero's philosophical writings demonstrate a "fairly coherent and modestly original system of thought" (Hiz 113). At the least, Cicero acquired a foundation for his views from the Academy. The Academy stood for free inquiry and the search for truth or at least what would be considered the most predictable opinion (Clarke 55).
Rhetoric and Philosophy
Cicero felt that the Greeks had already exhausted the possible methods for the pursuit of truth. The originality of his ideas lies in their combination and not their components. Although historians have creditted Socrates with the union of philosophy and rhetoric, Cicero credits the alliance of these arts to the previous followers of rhetorical sophism . In contrast to Socrates, Cicero believed more emphasis should be put on the rhetorical aspect and not the philosophical aspect of sophism(Siegal 12). Cicero believed that the productive application of knowledge for the guidance of human affairs was the greatest of human accomplishments. Philosophy generated knowledge but rhetorical persuasion made it effective. Each was dependent upon the other. They could not stand alone. A great man would be the master of both.
