I n the Arthur C. Clarke reality circa 1962, there was an extreme belief that the dream of Man taking his place out in the planets would come about rather than be eventually bogged than by politicians who'd rather remained earthbound or at most, no further than Earth orbit.
These fifteen short stories with nary a one called after the overall book title therefore falls into line with your traditional hard SF with no aliens but a lot about our planets as perceived in the 60s together with some rather solid story-telling with only the last story failing to maintain my interest. Of particular interest is 'Death And The Senator' simply because it demonstrates Clarke's practical prophesy signifying the death of astronauts aboard a shuttle coming down from Earth orbit.
None of these stories are space opera but they do demonstrate various things about Man and his need for survival in various situations.

T here isn't much that can be said about Arthur C. Clarke that hasn't been said before. Despite this fact, I'm going to bite the bullet and give it a go anyway. The book in question is a collection of short stories that cover the earlier stages of Clarke's career with original publishing dates that circle mainly around the fifties. With many other authors I might at this point have been worried that the volume in front of me was going to principally contain off-cuts and pieces so poorly written they were consigned to the authors' pre-history, until an enterprising editor decided to dredge them up for a bit of moolah. But, hey folks, this is Clarke! Fear not the poorly put together cash-in! This is the real deal. Some articles and reviews that I have read on Clarke have suggested that he forgets about characterisation in his attempts to present the amazing ideas that he has. I have always strongly disagreed with this but will concede that in this collection the characters are quite broadly drawn.

In 1945 - 12 years before the space age began - Arthur C Clarke suggested using satellites for global communications. He said many would consider this idea 'too far-fetched to be taken seriously'. Today the world uses hundreds of satellites to carry millions of messages. But Arthur C Clarke is a visionary of far greater order and with science fiction stories such as 2001: A Space Odyssey he explores the limits of the possible. This exhibition celebrated Arthur C Clarke's life and his outstanding contributions to the worlds of science, literature and entertainment. The exhibition closed on 2nd June 1997.

    Arthur C Clarke - 2001: A Space Odyssey
Most people will be familiar with the film - which in itself was one of the most ground-breaking sci-fi's ever made. It was also one of the most confusing. Despite the powerful imagery of developing apes and ancient black monoliths - and not forgetting HAL - the ending of the film always appeared mysterious. When you read the book, you have a perfect idea of what is going. This, simply put, is one of the foundations of modern science-fiction. It's also a superb book. That's if you don't mind the lack of character, that is. Arthur C Clarke simply gets on with the plot and tells it with great pace, the whole novel only being a couple of hundred pages short. What that means is that any character you meet is ultimately an incidental concern to the story-telling. In fact, the famously "psychotic" computer - HAL - is actually the best developed character of the entire work! However, if you can forgive the lack of character, you're in for rich reward. This is where Arthur C Clarke tells a future of earth decades before it happens - we see satellites here, long before they were even considered...but, unfortuntely, Clarkes vision of a space station remains superior to the ISS. We also follow an ancient mystery to an astonishing conclusion, and discover the secret of those now almost archetypal black monoliths. At the end of the day, this work is not primarily about space or space travel - but about the development of humanity - past, persent, and future. It speculates not only on our origins of thought, but on our conscious future, and does so by rushing us from early hominids to Clarke's vision of what 2001 would be like, decades before it happened. And it's his vision here - his ideas - and his ultimate conclusions, that make this such a compelling - and dominating read.

Clarke, Arthur C. Clarke, Arthur C. (Arthur Charles Clarke), Childhood's End Rendezvous with Rama (1973), and The Songs of Distant Earth (1983). In 1968 he collaborated with filmmaker Stanley Kubrick on 2001: A Space Odyssey, a novel that became an extremely successful motion picture. Three novelistic sequels followed, the last in 1997. Appropriately, Clarke's Collected Stories were published in 2001. In 1945, Clarke proposed the concept of positioning an artificial satellite in an orbit in which it circles the earth every 24 hours, thus appearing stationary to the locale below. Today, dozens of such communications satellites orbit the earth. See study by J. D. Olander (1977). The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia,

Humanity will survive information deluge – Sir Arthur C Clarke
Nalaka Gunawardene OneWorld South Asia 05 December 2003 Sir Arthur C Clarke is acknowledged as the greatest living science fiction writer and an outstanding visionary of our times. His writing over the past six decades – more than 100 books, 1,000 articles and short stories – have not only helped humanity find its way in times of rapid change, but also discussed the social and cultural implications of key technologies. In 1945, while still in his late 20s, he was the first to propose the concept of using a network of satellites in the geo-synchronous orbit for television and telecommunications. His vision became a reality in the mid 1960s, and within a generation, humankind has come to rely critically on the network of comsats placed, in what is now called the Clarke Orbit, some 22,300 miles above the earth.

The science fiction writer, Arthur C Clarke, has been knighted, more than two years after the title was conferred on him. UK High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Linda Duffield, presented the "award of Knight Bachelor" to the novelist at a ceremony in Colombo, where he resides. The investiture ceremony was delayed until Sir Arthur was cleared of charges of paedophilia, brought against him after an article published in the Sunday Mirror. Sir Arthur has always maintained his innocence. He was due to travel to London earlier this year to receive the award from the Queen, but was unable to do so because of post polio syndrome.

By BBC New Online's Jonathan Amos
The author and visionary Sir Arthur C Clarke says society has made a huge mistake in rejecting out of hand the idea that cold fusion may be possible. And he mocked editors and journalists at the British Association's Festival of Science for not giving the technology serious consideration. He said the age of fossil fuels was coming to an end and society needed to find new sources of energy. Cold fusion or other "anomalous sources of energy" might just turn out to be the answer, he said. Cold fusion first hit the headlines in 1989 when researchers Martin Fleishmann and Stanley Pons suggested it was possible to generate heat through the fusion of atoms at normal temperatures. But when leading scientists failed to reproduce their results and Fleishmann and Pons retracted some of their early claims, cold fusion was dismissed as nonsense. Crooks and cranks However, the research has gone on, with little funding and largely underground, and Sir Arthur said the results coming out of some labs demanded attention.

Arthur C. Clarke The Making of Kubrick's 2001, Clarke says that he is an atheist. "It may be that our role on this planet is not to worship God, but to create him." Arthur C. Burns, says: "Perhaps most controversially, religions of all kinds have fallen under a strict taboo, with the citizenry looking back on the religious beliefs and practices of earlier ages as products of ignorance that caused untold strife and bloodshed. But the concept of a God, known by the Latin word Deus, survives, a legacy of man's continuing wonder at the universe.
"In this, Clarke is giving vent to one of the few things that seem to ruffle his equable nature. 'Religion is a byproduct of fear,' he says. 'For much of human history, it may have been a necessary evil, but why was it more evil than necessary? Isn't killing people in the name of God a pretty good definition of insanity?' "

    Clarke, Arthur C(harles) (1917- )
British author (resident in Sri Lanka since 1956) of science fiction and popular science who worked on the development of radar during World War II, originated the concept of communications satellites in the Oct. 1945 issue of Wireless World , and earned a first-class degree in physics and mathematics from Kings College, London (1948). His nonfiction books of the early 1950s, including The Exploration of Space (1951), brought him fame as an enthusiastic advocate of space travel, although he had begun writing science fiction two decades earlier, influenced most significantly by Olaf Stapledon 's Last and First Men . Informed by his science and engineering background and suffused with his liberal optimism about man's destiny among the stars, Clarke's writings combine meticulous technical authenticity with an almost mystical vision of the future. The notion that mankind's further evolution is inextricably bound up with extraterrestrial contact is recurrent throughout his work. In Childhood's End The City and the Stars (1956), and

    A Collection of Classics
"A Collection of Classics" takes a perspective on what a classic book is, who has written them, and how they did it. The definition the team used is: "Classics are works that have been continually read by multiple generations and contain universal themes and ideas that never fail to provoke thoughts or emotions." The site provides information about many different authors (biographies, lists of their works, and links to other sites). "Creating Your Own Classic," gives information on the writing process, publishing, parts of a story, drama, poetry, and even tips on curing writers block. "The Childrens Corner" includes information on childrens authors, childrens books and writing for children. An "Authors Timeline", "Tours", and "Interact" complete this information-filled site.
