If you would like more details, please see the Introduction to the novel RAMA II. Moderator: to : Will there be a sequel to RAMA? ITC: There is a planned sequel to the game RAMA. My guess is that the RAMA universe will show up in a few more manifestations as well. Moderator: to : what kind of engineering work does Gentry do for NASA? shred: Gentry, were you a writer first or an engineer first? ITC: I was the director of Science Analysis for Viking, the Chief Engineer for Galileo, and on the review boards for most of planetary missions of the last two decades. Moderator: to : Does it ever feel strange to write with someone so well known and well regarded? ITC: As an undergraduate I studied languages and literature. In graduate school at MIT I studied engineering. All my life I have loved learning. I always expected to write novels when, and if I could find the time. Moderator: to : I am curious as to how Co-authoring a book works out. What roles do you each play? Arthur: Hello, Arthur is here Moderator: Greetings, ACC... ITC: I was flattered when Arthur asked me to collaborate with him. In the beginning it was very much a mentor student relationship, at least where the craftsmanship was concerned. Moderator: Any questions for Arthur? ITC: Hello, Arthur. Moderator:

According to Leonard F. Wheat, Stanley Kubrick's 1968 movie 2001: A Space Odyssey tells three hidden stories: Homer's The Odyssey ; a spoofy tale based on science-fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke's idea of man-machine symbiosis; and Friedrich Nietzsche's Thus Spake Zarathustra Also sprach Zarathustra , 1883-1891, 4 volumes).
Critics attacked for "its ponderously slow, boring plot development; its lack of character development; its confusing exposition; its substitution of special effects for story; and its enigmatic, frustratingly symbolic, surrealistic conclusion." 's champions "have countered by hailing its plot sophistication (no Buck Rogers stuff here); its substitution of concepts for characters as dramatic substance; its imaginative use of symbols; its stimulating ambiguities; and its breathtaking visual images, superbly enhanced by classical music." Wheat concludes that the admirers seem to be winning since Kubrick's film has been rated among the best films of all times by polls conducted by the British as well as the American Film Institute.
Wheat asserts that 's ambiguities and mysteries can be explained. For him, the movie is a triple allegory, three allegories (metaphorically or symbolically told hidden stories) combined in one surface story. Wheat writes: "Kubrick's first allegory is a retelling, in far more detail than has been imagined, of Homer's epic poem

Author tickled and nervous to collaborate with Arthur C. Clarke
February 2, 2000 Web posted at: 11:40 a.m. EST (1640 GMT) By Jamie Allen CNN Interactive Senior Writer (CNN) Science fiction writer Stephen Baxter says when he first started collaborating with Arthur C. Clarke on the new novel "The Light of Other Days" he was a bit nervous. Clarke is, after all, the author of groundbreaking novels like "2001: A Space Odyssey" and, oh yeah, the guy who dreamed up the idea of communication satellites. But Clarke, 82, is also the one who initiated the idea to work with the 42-year-old Baxter, whose previous work includes the novels "The Time Ships" and "Moonseed." Clarke drew up a four-page outline and sent it to Baxter via email. (They had earlier worked on a short story together).
