RANDOM MUSINGS
On Arthur C. Clarke
by Robert J. Sawyer
People keep saying Arthur C. Clarke should stop writing, now that he's "past his prime." No way! I hope he's still producing his solo works in 2001 and beyond. Clarke recently turned seventy-five. When one says to a 75-year-old that it's time for you to stop doing the work you love and instead you should do something else, that something else usually turns out to be dying. I loved Clarke's recent The Ghost From the Grand Banks . Now, it's no Childhood's End , but it is a good piece of Clarke and I thoroughly enjoyed it (and it's better than many of his lesser works from his golden youth, such as The Deep Range ). I also though I dislike the general ageism in this society. Clarke, or the cast of old Star Trek , or whomever one cares to name, should give up doing what they enjoy doing (and their livelihood) because they perhaps no longer do it the same way they did in their youth? Nonsense. Fortunately, there's a greater dynamic at play: the marketplace, which over and over and over again validates the work of these people, by continuing to buy it in huge numbers. May we all be so fortunate when we become senior citizens.

Clarke For decades, the author of the science-fiction classics "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Childhood's End" has exhibited an uncanny ability to see the future. By Frank Houston T he main character in the classic science-fiction story "The Time Machine" is known only as the Time Traveller. He travels aboard a machine of his own construction made of ebony, bronze and chrome far ahead in time, glimpsing the harrowing changes in store for humanity, and then returns home to the Victorian England of his creator, H.G. Wells, to relate his tale. At the end of the story, the Time Traveller enters the Time Machine again, equipped with his Kodak, and literally disappears into the future. Arthur C. Clarke was born in the seaside town of Minehead, Somerset, England on December 16, 1917. In 1936 he moved to London, where he joined the British Interplanetary Society . There he started to experiment with astronautic material in the BIS, write the BIS Bulletin and science fiction. During World War II, as a RAF officer, he was in charge of the first radar talk-down equipment, the Ground Controlled Approach, during its experimental trials. His only non-science-fiction novel, Glide Path , is based on this work. The official Royal Air Force portrait, 1943 After the war, he returned to London and to the BIS, which he presided in 46-47 and 50-53. In 1945 he published the technical paper "Extra-terrestrial Relays" laying down the principles of the satellite communication with satellites in geostationary orbits - a speculation realized 25 years later. His invention has brought him numerous honors, such as the 1982 Marconi International Fellowship, a gold medal of the Franklin Institute , the Vikram Sarabhai Professorship of the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, the Lindbergh Award and a Fellowship of King's College, London

    http://www.lesekost.de/HHL59Z.htm
Arthur C. Clarke "History Lesson": A Modern Allegory of the Cave
Throughout the centuries students have labored at Greek and Latin texts. Plato's dialogues in particular have never ceased to arouse debates and controversial opinions. In a well-known exaggeration the British mathematician and philosopher Alfred North Whitehead said: "The safest general characterisation of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato" (9). If one knows a bit of Plato's work it is either the praise of love in The Symposium or the Allegory of the Cave in Book VII of The Republic. This allegory is one of the most debated philosophical stories and one which is disputed anew among every generation.
In contrast to the centuries' old philosophy of Plato, science fiction is a comparatively new literary form. It is not always in great esteem within academic circles. However, some science fiction authors do not overwhelm their stories with amazing technical developments but tell stories to ponder on. Often they pick up one of the eternal dreams and give it a modern scientific treatment. In Arthur C. Clarke's science fiction story "History Lesson," one looks at a specific problem, already dealt with in the Allegory of the Cave, from a different point of view. A thorough comparison of "History Lesson" with Plato's famous allegory shows astonishing parallels. Besides its comic twist the story also supports Plato's idea of the deception of evidence.
