WHILE on the subject of David Martin-Clark's website, it is good to see that, in a little over two years, the shipping and transport case notes have built up a subscriber base of almost 500, and the insurance case note subscribers now number well over 200. It is easy to flood people with your email products - never mind that you might be breaking the law - and to claim a circulation of hundreds of thousands. But actually maintaining a healthy subscriber base of proactive and willing recipients is another thing. There are only two ways to join the DMC mailing lists. You can apply to join from the mailing list page of the website itself, or you can respond to an invitation message that David himself can initiate (all he needs is the person's email address).

"Plain Heathen Mischief"
(reviewed by Mary Whipple MAY 15, 2004)
"I'll start by sayin' there are no bigger thieves in the world than insurance companies that earn a livin' by systematically denying claims and nickel-and-dimin' folks to death. And if they finally do pay you, it's always horribly late since they want to use your money for months and months before forking it over…At any rate, a lot of my work involves keepin' insurance companies honest, makin' sure they don't get too rich from the sweat of the ordinary people they're trying to screw." With these words Edmund Brooks explains his business to Rev. Joel King, former pastor of Roanoke First Baptist Church, newly released from jail after serving a six month term for "contributing to the delinquency of a minor." Edmund, a parishioner originally from Las Vegas, has picked up Joel upon his release from jail and offered to drive to Montana, where Joel's sister is awaiting him, a trip which might have been fatal if Edmund's car crash along the way had not been so well-executed. Claiming he was forced off the road by another car, Edmund is soon poised to collect on his "misfortune," one more scam among many in his career, and he is anxious to persuade Joel to help him with a few more "foolproof" jobs.

Stephen Mitchelmore is impressed by Timothy Clark's meditation
on the life and work of Martin Heidegger

T he Routledge Critical Thinkers series is turning into something special. Maurice Blanchot by Ulrich Haase and William Large, published last year, is a profound and miraculously lucid guide to the French writer's work. This year we have Timothy Clark's introduction to the work of a major influence on Blanchot: the German philosopher Martin Heidegger (1889-1976). The high quality is maintained. Undoubtedly, this has a great deal to do with the subjects. Both writers are not only seductively poetic, but make of poetry itself something much more than is commonly permitted. Yet there are innumerable introductions to Heidegger, and a growing number of works on Blanchot. What makes these significant is the series' focus. Routledge's general subtitle is "Essential guides for literary studies". While this would seem limiting, or merely instrumental to passing an exam, it in fact reminds us of the true fascination of philosophy and literature; not as means to an end, but a necessary presence. Surprisingly, Clark begins by questioning the policy of Routledge's Series Editor. In the general introduction, Robert Eaglestone says the series aims to see the thinkers idea placed "firmly back in their contexts." Such an aim, Clark argues, blocks off precisely what Heidegger's ideas question. "Imagine", he asks:

Clark Endorses Martin As The "Devil We Know", Rejects Harper April 24, 2004 Prime Minister Paul Martin received a rather surprising endorsement from a political foe Sunday. During CTV's Question Period, former Progressive Conservative leader Joe Clark said he would rather see Paul Martin lead the country than the new Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper. Harper During the interview on "Question Period", Clark indicated his preference would be to go with the "devil we know", Paul martin, as opposed to Mr. Harper. "I would be extremely worried about Mr. Harper", said Clark, who also described Harper as "dangerous". "I am that concerned with the imprint of Stephen Harper...not only what he stood for in the past- but the way he has led this party." Clark described the new Conservative Party as just a "masquerade" of the former PC Party.

By STEPHEN MAHER / Ottawa Bureau OTTAWA - It looks like Canadians are about to elect a Liberal government, says former Tory prime minister Joe Clark. Mr. Clark, who will be shaking hands in Kings-Hants today and Thursday with Liberal MP Scott Brison, says he expects Canadians are likely to go with the devil they know. "What we know - and we're speaking before the election has even been called - is that public opinion polls, for what they're worth, show a greater support for the Liberal party than for any other, and its support exists in more places than for any other party," Mr. Clark said Tuesday in Ottawa. "So it looks like a Liberal government, whether a majority or minority, although there can always be surprises." Prime Minister Paul Martin is widely expected to call an election this weekend for June 28. Mr. Clark, who retired from the House of Commons last week after more than 30 years in federal politics, is not delighted by the prospect of a government led by Mr. Martin, who Mr. Clark says has been surprisingly inept. "It's started very badly and it's not demonstrated the kind of skill that people expected would be there," he said. "It's been a surprise to most people, including me, and I think, a disappointment to most people. Partisanship aside, where adrift was the only policy with the Chretien government, people were looking for someone who would take hold."

Clark brings key election question into focus
By CHIP MARTIN

Joe Clark hit the nail on the head when he told a television interviewer Canadian voters have a devilish choice in the upcoming federal election. He said it's between Liberal Leader Paul Martin, whom he doesn't really like, and Conservative Leader Stephen Harper, whom he likes even less. So, by default, he'll go with Martin. "The issue is going to be which leader is better, which leader is worse and I think the question is a very tough one," the former prime minister said, rocking Ottawa. "I would be extremely worried about Mr. Harper. I personally would prefer to go with the devil we know." Martin, reasons Clark, "is less dangerous to the country." His comments were dismissed by some leading Conservatives as "sour grapes" from "a bitter old man." MP John Reynolds, the Conservative party's campaign co-chair, went so far as to say: "I'm mad. He's being a traitor to the Conservative cause." Clark opposed the merger of the former Progressive Conservative and Alliance parties last December to form the Conservative party, and sits as an independent in Parliament. He won't contest the next election. His bombshell came as all parties prepare for a possible spring vote.
