Interview with Sandra Cisneros, by Reed Dasenbrock R.D.: So what does incorporating the Spanish explicitly change things?
Cisneros: What it does is change the rhythm of my writing. I think that incorporating the Spanish, for me, allows me to create new expressions in Englishto say things in English that have never been said before. And I get to do that by translating literally. I love calling stories by Spanish expressions. I called this story "Salvador Early." It's a nice title It means "sooner or later," tarde o temprano, which literally translates as late or early. All of a sudden something happens to the English, something really new is happening, a new spice is added to the English language.
R.D.: I noticed that one thing you do in the new stories is translate as you go along. You often give a phrase in Spanish and then quickly give maybe a third of it in English.
Cisneros: Sometimes.
R.D.: Not all of it.
Cisneros: No, I don't have to.
R.D.: What kinds of choices do you make there?
Cisneros: That's the fun part! See, sometimes you don't have to say the whole thing. Now I'm learning how you can say something in English so that you know the person is saying it in Spanish. I like that. You can say a phrase in Spanish, and you can choose to not translate e it, but you can make it understood through the context. "And then my abuelita called me a sin verguenza and cried because I am without shame," you see? Just in the sentence you can weave it in. To me it's really fun to be doing that, to me it's like I've uncovered this whole motherlode that I haven't tapped into. All the expresiones in Spanish when translated make English wonderful. I feel like I haven't finished playing around. I just feel so rich, as though you've given me all this new territory and said, "Okay, you can go in there and play."

ClassicNote on The House on Mango Street
Biography of Author Sandra Cisneros

Born December 20, 1954 in Chicago, Sandra Cisneros is an American novelist, short-story writer, essayist, and poet. Cisneros is one of the first Hispanic-American writers who has achieved commercial success. She is lauded by literary scholars and critics for works which help bring the perspective of Chicana (Mexican-American) women into the mainstream of literary feminism. Cisneros received her B.A. from Loyola University in 1976 and her M.F.A from the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop in 1978. This workshop marks an important turning point in her career as a writer. Cisneros had periodically written poems and stories while growing up, but it was the frustrations she encountered at the Writer's Workshop that inspired Cisneros' realization that her experiences as a Latina woman were unique and outside the realm of dominant American culture. Thus, Cisneros decided to write about conflicts directly related to her upbringing, including divided cultural loyalties, feelings of alienation, and degradation associated with poverty. These specific cultural and social concerns, coupled with Cisneros' feelings of alienation as a Latina writer, came to life five years later in The House on Mango Street (1983). In addition to writing, Cisneros has taught at the Latino Youth Alternative High School in Chicago and has been a college recruiter and counselor for minority students at Loyala University of Chicago. She served as literature director for the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center in San Antonio, Texas, and was an artist in residence at the Foundation Michael Karolyi in Vence, France. She has been a guest professor at

Sandra Cisneros did not have a "normal" childhood. "As a person growing up in a society where the class norm was superimposed on a television screen, I couldn't understand why our home wasn't all green lawns and white wood like the ones in `'eave It To Beaver' and 'Father Knows Best'" (Ghosts 72). She wanted desperately to believe that her poverty was just a temporary situation, so she looked toward stories to escape. There was a book, called The Little House , that she checked out of the library over and over again. The house in the story was her dream house because it was one house for one family, and it was permanent and stable.

An Interview with Sandra Cisneros
January and February, 2000
QUESTION (Oliver-Rotger): You have said that you found your personal voice as a writer when you ceased to try to emulate a writing about comfortable spaces and places. Yet, the idea of the house as a space of comfort and intimacy is very present in your writings, especially in The House on Mango Street. Do you think that, in that respect, Gaston Bachelard’s description of the house as a space of intimacy in The Poetics of Space influenced you in any way? ANSWER (Cisneros): Yes, it did. Only I didn’t understand it in the first place, and had to reflect on why this was so. I realized that I was the only person in the creative writing workshop that didn’t have the same type of memory as Bachelard did regarding houses. This made me realize my class difference, and, subsequently, my gender difference regarding homes. Q: In Mango Street Esperanza becomes gradually aware of the spatial divisions within her own neighborhood and within the city. It seems, on the one hand, that she can only find freedom outside the social and gender constraints of her neighborhood, away from her past, her tradition, her class, her family home. On the other hand, she promises to go back to Mango, to rescue the ones that cannot out. You have said before that Mango Street would have never been published if you yourself had not had that space or house of your own to write the stories. Can you comment on this identification with the experience of the poor, the sexually abused, the disenfranchised, which has been your own experience, and the need for some distance?

Cisneros, Sandra
(1954- ), poet and author Born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 20, 1954, Sandra Cisneros grew up in poverty. While attending Chicago's Loyola University, she studied English literature and worked at her writing. After graduating in 1976 with a B.A., she attended the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop (M.F.A., 1978). There she developed what was to be the theme of most of her writing, her unique experiences as a Chicana in a largely alien culture. Cisneros' first book of fiction, The House on Mango Street (1983), is a collection of semiautobiographical prose-poems that recall an aspiring writer's girlhood in an impoverished Chicago neighborhood. Her book Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories (1991) contains tales of beleaguered girls and women who struggle to retain control over their destinies. Cisneros' volumes of poetry include Bad Boys The Rodrigo Poems (1985), and Loose Woman My Wicked, Wicked Ways (1987) collected 60 poems on subjects such as Chicago, European travels, and sexual guilt. In 1995 Cisneros won a MacArthur Foundation fellowship.
