Biography
Cicero was born in Arpinum and died in Rome . His family, the Tullii Cicerones, was one of the landed gentry in Arpinum and resented the fame and fortunes of the other great Arpinate families, the Marii . Throughout his life, the conservative Cicero loathed being compared to the then more famous Marius
Early life
Cicero served as a quaestor in Western Sicily in 75 BC . He built an extremely successful career as an advocate, and first attained prominence for his successful prosecution in August 70 BC of Gaius Verres , the former governor of Sicily . Despite his great successes as an advocate, Cicero suffered from his lack of reputable ancestry; as no Tullius Cicero had been

Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 BC BC) An accomplished poet, philosopher, rhetorician, and humorist, Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 BC BC ) was also the greatest forensic orator Rome ever produced. But to Cicero, service to the res publica (literally, "the public affair") was a Roman citizen's highest duty. At age 26 (in 80 BC ), he successfully defended a man prosecuted unjustly by a crony of the bloodthirsty dictator Sulla. In 69 BC , he brought to order the corrupt Sicilian governor Verres. As consul in 63 BC , he put down the Catilinarian conspiracy; later, he was sent into exile for refusing to join the First Triumvirate. Late in life, he led the Senate's gallant but unsuccessful battle against Antony, for which he paid with his life on 7 December 43 BC

Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 BC-43 BC)
Marcus Tullius Cicero (born Arpinum, Italy, 106 B.C.; died Rome, December 7, 43 B.C.), born on the Palatine hill of Rome. Leader in the last half-century of the Roman Republic, generally considered the greatest Latin prose stylist, and the worst poet. Cicero was consul in 63 B.C. the first man elected consul who had no consular ancestors in more than 30 years. He is particularly noted for his speeches against Catiline, the total of which was four two to the senate, and two to the people. He was later exiled, and during this time, wrote down his speeches, before returning to Rome. He was eventually executed, and his hands and head were hung in the rostra in the Roman forum. The biography of Cicero written by Plutarch begins as follows:
It is generally said, that Helvia, the mother of Cicero, was both well-born and lived a fair life; but of his father nothing is reported but in extremes. For whilst some would have him the son of a fuller, and educated in that trade, others carry back the origin of his family to Tullus Attius, an illustrious king of the Volscians, who waged war not without honour against the Romans. However, he who first of that house was surnamed Cicero seems to have been a person worthy to be remembered; since those who succeeded him not only did not reject, but were fond of that name, though vulgarly made a matter of reproach. For the Latins call a vetch Cicer, and a nick or dent at the tip of his nose, which resembled the opening in a vetch, gave him the surname of Cicero.

Cicero
Everyone has the obligation to ponder well his own specific traits of character. He must also regulate them adequately and not wonder whether someone else's traits might suit him better. The more definitely his own a man's character is, the better it fits him.

Rome The Crisis of the Roman Republic
Julius Caesar
The Age of Augustus Cicero
was born in 106 B.C., six years before the birth of Julius Caesar , into a wealthy family, though none of his family served as senators. He received the Roman equivalent of an Ivy League education, studying rhetoric and philosophy in Rome, Athens, and Rhodes. After making a name as a lawyer in the Roman lawcourts, he was elected to the office of quaestor in 76, which made him a member of the Senate, and in 63 he was elected consul, at the lowest legal age and as the first man for thirty years to gain that position from a family which had not previously held the office. During his year as consul he put down the conspiracy of Catiline, for which he was awarded the title of "Father of his Country." Cicero, however, as a champion of the traditional institutions of the Roman republic and the enemy of autocracy, was no match for the power politics of Julius Caesar and Pompey, and was never afterwards a major influence in public affairs when they erupted onto the scene. Cicero rejoiced at the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 B.C. and returned to political life with vigorous public attacks on Mark Antony, but his association with the young Octavian (later the Emperor Augustus) did not save him from Antony's revenge and he was killed in the wave of assassinations which began the triumvirate regime of Octavian, Antony, and Lepidus (43 B.C.).
Rome The Punic Wars
Rome Glossary Officium officia in its narrow sense means "reciprocal personal relationships," but for Cicero means something like "what we owe to others based on our specific relationship to them." Cicero's most lasting work in the European tradition is "The Dream of Scipio," a short interlude in a longer (now lost) work on the duties various members of a republic owe to one another

Historically, my paintings have been abstractions inspired by the landscape. The multi-planed layers of color, distance and dimension have been a mainstay in my work and continue even as the paintings evolve toward more three dimensionality. The painterly illusions now incorporate photographs, sketches, copper foil, gold leaf, wooden skewers, stitching and the like, transforming the canvas into a low relief object formed by personal metaphors and inferences. Compositionally, the works are more iconographic and ceremonial constructs, with allusions to a personal language of thoughts and recollections.
As I reflect on parts of my personal history - living as a child in Japan and Europe, being raised in a strict Catholic home, my rite of passage as a Marine in Vietnam - all the pieces are emerging in my consciousness and creative life. I find the iconic, frontal, ceremonial constructs and metaphors are speaking to me in a less illusionistic tongue and in a more concrete language.
