Bill Caldwell (1919 - 5 Jan. 2001)
Caldwell, born in New York, moved to Maine in 1964 and began a 25-year career in 1965 as newspaper columnist for the Portland newspapers , writing about 3,000 columns before retiring in 1991. His home in Damariscotta, called Piper's Bend , was the site of parties for the state's elite, including political leaders, but he also enjoyed the company of artisans, fisherman, and other "regular" people. His 30-foot converted lobster boat, Steer Clear , was recognizable along the Maine coast and he was sometimes stopped for an autograph while cruising. Caldwell wrote several books and articles about Maine, including: "Harvey F. Gamage: Master Ship Builder, South Bristol, Maine" (April 1970; in "Down East," 15 pp.); Enjoying Maine: Lively Stories About People and Places, from the Sea Coast to the North Country...

Chute's 'Snow Man' offers cold comfort
By Francis X. Quinn
Associated Press PARSONSFIELD, Maine Black flies and big business. Typewriter troubles and feminist reviewers. Novelist Carolyn Chute's description of the annoyances, resentments and rebelliousness in American life is writ large and small in her conversation, same as in ''The Beans of Egypt, Maine'' and her other writing. Novelist Carolyn Chute hugs one of her Scottish terriers outside her home in Parsonsfield, Maine. Ms. Chute says she hopes the violent class warfare drawn darkly in her latest book, ''Snow Man,'' does not come to pass, even as she suggests it is already under way. Nature's pests are to be expected here in the hills and valleys of western Maine. But the pressures she sees keeping down the poor and less privileged for her, victims of ''the Wall Street religion'' draw stern rebuke from this prophet of populism. Ms. Chute says she hopes the violent class warfare drawn darkly in her latest book, ''Snow Man,'' doesn't come to pass, even as she suggests with a shrug that it's already under way. ''People are either in despair or they're angry. And some people are speaking out through one awkward way or another, or dangerous way, or whatever,'' Ms. Chute says, reflecting on the bloody exploits of the book's protagonist, Robert Daniel Drummond.

I read this in the Times today (cool, learned people can just say "the Times" and people know what they’re talking about) and proceeded to take out the smallest violin in the world and played a laconic and mournful tarantella for the author, poor Ms. Chute. In case the link has gone or you can’t get in because you don’t have a password for the site – this is a brief Op-Ed piece called How Can You Create Fiction When Reality Comes To Call by a novelist who details her typical day at home with the purpose of showing humorously why she rarely has time to write. And by the way, she has no kids, no horrible infirmities. And let me say that again: " her day at home." Her awful terrible no good very bad day begins with birds singing outside her window and some good ol’ morning fucking with her husband, "X-rated stuff happens. (Delete details.)" Oh Carolyn, you saucy wench, you!
