Fiction
ISBN: 0156011409
"It ain't left or right. It's up and down. You're either up or you're down. That's all there is to it. OK?"
SNOW MAN is a study of the militia movement in modern America, in microcosm. In the author's Foreword, she explains this book as the "DNA" of a larger and lengthier upcoming novel. SNOW MAN is a novel marked by a short, clipped sentence structure; short, choppy words and minuscule chapters rush the book to its conclusion.
Kristy Creighton arrives at her parents' vintage home in Boston to reflect upon her life as an unmarried member of collegiate academia. What she discovers in the stable is a reality that clashes with her entire political upbringing. A gravely wounded Robert Drummond, member of the revolutionist militia movement, is hiding in the building. He has just murdered Senator Kip Davies, and Kristy's father, also a Senator, is next on his list. When Connie Creighton, Kristy's artist mother, comes home to a bizarre scene - a critically wounded fugitive being doctored by a local veterinarian and cared for by her own daughter - her penchant for the extraordinary soon entangles her in this desperate situation.
While minor characters enliven the action, the real meat of the story is the relationship among Connie, Kristy, and Robert Drummond, who will forever change the lives of these two women with his intrusion into their home. Drummond is a man who has lost trust, and Kristy finds in him a passion for life that she feels she has misplaced in her own life. They are attracted by their philosophical differences and their attempts to understand one another.

In this class we will be examining racialized identities in general rather than simply black and white, attempting to challenge our simplistic categorization of race in America. Race, as Robert T. Carter notes, is a social and political reality: "Decisions about whom to marry and date, where to live, where to go to school, what is taught, how to move about in one’s community and surrounding area, where to shop, for whom to vote, and what occupations to pursue are all consciously or unconsciously influenced to racial considerations" (206). The course will focus very deliberately on whiteness since whiteness is usually considered an "invisible" racial identity. As the recently published collection Displacing Whiteness insists, whiteness as a racial marker has been inadequately examined. Critical examinations of whiteness, however, offer "a ground not only for the examination of white selves...but also for the excavation of the foundations of all racial and cultural positionings" (Frankenberg 2). By asking how whiteness is performed by subjects, such research tries to illustrate that whiteness is "not a static, universal 'thing,' but is instead "always constructed, always in the process of being made and unmade" (Frankenberg 16). The class will explore these ideas in recent novels, short stories, films, and popular culture, asking such questions as : What is race? How do we define racial identity? How is our understanding of race influenced by history? By stereotypes? By mass media? How is whiteness performed by subjects in daily life, in film, in literature? Is race an essential category or is it socially constructed?

Verb Tense Consistency Directions: The following paragraphs (in blue font ) are taken from Carolyn Chute's novel The Beans of Egypt, Maine. Chute's novel maintains a striking immediacy through her unusual and consistent use of the present tense; things happen in a kind of perpetual now . When you click "The Beans" button below, the text will reappear in the text area. Select the present tense verbs (by double-clicking them) and change them into past tense verb, using ALL CAPS. Don't change tenses within quoted language and be careful not to change the form of verb forms that are not actually verbs. The second text area will reveal our version of this exercise when you click on "Grammar's Version." When you've finished changing all the verbs, consider how the text has changed. What have you lost (or gained) by changing the verbs? What verbs didn't you change, and why not? He moves up the mountain like a packhorse, crunching many small sticks and branches underfoot. She rides on his shoulders like a child. She wears a child-sized summer dress, and her bare legs are almost lost in his beard. Her hair is almost a fluorescent yellow. She is still very bony, very white, very silent. She smells of her morning bath.
On the mountains are countless birches: gray, gold, and the white, some of the young ones bending from last winter's pitiless snows. There is not much shade here. Birds scream from all directions.

    ACTIVISM
Unity to host first Chautauqua in 80 years
    By Noah Bruce
LET'S CHAUTAUQUA: Carolyn Chute and her Maine Militia will join with lefty-environmentalists
in populism. “Our priorities are that we want to dominate North America first, then South America, and then Asia, and then Europe.”

—David Glass, Wal-Mart CEO As mass-demonstrations against the World Trade Organization in Seattle, Genoa, and Washington, DC prove, activists the world over are angered by the domination of corporations like Wal-Mart. (The IMF/WTO meetings scheduled for September 26 through 28 have been cancelled in light of the WTC and Pentagon attacks, thus plans for protests have also been cancelled.) According to populist radio commentator Jim Hightower, while this anger has resulted in “piecemeal efforts” to keep corporations at bay, there exists no unified front attacking the corporate structure itself. This is where the Chautauqua series, kicking off in Unity Maine on September 21 through 22 comes in. What’s a Chautauqua you ask? A Chautauqua is a barnstorming, populist-tinged festival featuring speeches, workshops, music, food, and theater. Chautauquas were big around the turn of the century up until the 1920s. President Theodore Roosevelt once called Chautauqua “the most American thing in America.” According to David Kubiak, whose group Big Medicine is organizing the event, the Unity Chautauqua, which will be held in conjunction with the Common Ground Fair, will be the first in about 80 years. After Unity, the festival will travel to Atlanta, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Austin, and Seattle.
