Boone, North Carolina 28608 Nov. 1, 1999 Visiting Writers Series: Novelist Carolyn Chute BOONECarolyn Chute quickly rose to fame in literary circles following the publication of her best-selling novel "The Beans of Egypt, Maine." The critics’ harsh reviews of the best seller nagged Chute though she wrote other well-received novels. "She felt the book had literally been taken from her and published before she was actually finished with it," said Appalachian State University English professor and "Appalachian Journal" editor Jerry Williamson. "So she published a second, ‘finished’ version of Beans which is indeed better and solves some of the moral dilemmas that some critics got hung up on in 1985." Chute will read from her works and answer questions about critics, best sellers and revisions Wednesday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the Linville Falls Room of the Plemmons Student Union. Book sales and signing will follow. Chute will also hold a question and answer session Wednesday, Nov. 10, from 2 to 3:15 p.m. in room 302 Sanford Hall. The event is free and open to the public. Visitor parking tags are available for the afternoon event at the traffic office on Rivers Street.

The plausible and the implausible in Carolyn Chute's Snow Man
By Sandy English
3 December 1999 Back to screen version Snow Man Carolyn Chute published her first novel, The Beans of Egypt, Maine in 1985, and its sequel, Letourneau's Used Auto Parts , in 1988. These were important novels: it seemed that without any sentimentality whatsoever, Chute was able to depict the concerns for love and happiness of the working poor at a particular time (the Reagan/Bush years) and place (rural Maine). The novels told about families of all sorts, stable and decaying ones, families made up of two people and families that stretched the biological definition of the term. The pinch of poverty and denial could be felt everywhere in these books, and the strain on the emotions under it. Chute played with the wicked variety of life among a group of people that readers hardly ever read about. These first novels of Chute's flowed unabashedly and honestly from her own life. There was unquestionably a spontaneous relation of the author to the material. As she said at the time of publication of The Beans of Egypt, Maine

The Beans of Egypt, Maine
- Book Review, by Chute, Carolyn
Annotation

"Her eye...for detail is superb, and her portrait of rural life and people are as vivid as anything in Steinbeck or Caldwell." Detroit News
From the Publisher
There are families like the Beans all over America. They live on the wrong side of town in mobile homes strung with Christmas lights all year around. The women are often pregnant, the men drunk and just out of jail, and the children too numerous to count. In the 'Beans of Egypt', Maine, we meet the God-fearing Earlene Pomerleau and experience her obsession for the whole swarming Bean tribe. Therecousin Rubie, a boozer and a brawler, tall Aunt Roberta, the earth mother surrounded by countless, clinging babies, and Beal, sensitive, often gentle, but doomed by the violence within him.

IN AUGUST CAROLYN CHUTE accepted an invitation to speak at a peace rally in Bath, Maine. Only a few days later it was retracted. The Pacifists organizing the rally cited her support for the 2nd Amendment, the right to bear arms, as the reason. It was the first time that she and the Pacifists looked at each other from opposites sides of the fence. Carolyn is against the war, but for defense. She would rather go to jail than surrender her guns. The Pacifists don’t believe in guns or defense and practice peaceful resistance. “It was a big turn for us,” Carolyn said. “I made a decision, at that point, not to do protests anymore because it was really a world that they wanted [and] not the world that I wanted. I’m out of the peace movement. I got kicked out. I got fired.”

James Schildroth "I love action stories," said novelist Carolyn Chute to writers in Carole Taylor's prose writing class. She remembered as a child making little cartoon books with a figure in a slightly different position on each page. Fanning through the pages gave the illusion of movement. "You can do that with words," said the author of Merry Men and Letourneau's Used Auto Parts . "When they're moving, you can see them. You know them." Pull Up Your La-Z Boy Carolyn, who recently made her third visit to Bates College as an intermittent learning associate in the humanities, invited the students to "Pretend we're all on La-Z boys and foutons and the Venetian blinds are hung [references playing off a conversation about the classroom environment of 200 Pettigrew]. We're sitting around the woodstove. Let's have a conversation." After Carolyn and the students had critiqued the students' work, she shared generously out of her experience as a writer. From that sharing, all serious writers present found at least one pearl from her treasure chest of writing advice to take back to the dorm or the Den or the computer lab to mull over and be challenged by.
