Agatha Christie's stage drama, The Mousetrap , is the world's longest running play. This phenomenal production opened in 1952 and shows no sign of closing. It has become as much a London tourist destination as Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London. But The Mousetrap is certainly not Agatha Christie's only contribution to theater. As well as writing 16 plays herself, she has provided inspiration for many other playwrights over the years. The first theatrical performance of a Christie mystery occurred at the Prince of Wales Theatre on May 15, 1928. Alibi was an adaptation by Michael Morton of Christie's 1926 novel The Murder of Roger Ackroyd and it also marked the first stage appearance of Hercule Poirot, played by the young Charles Laughton.

Agatha Christie Taught at home by a governess and tutors, as a child Agatha Christie never attended school. She became adept at creating games to keep herself occupied at a very young age. A shy child, unable to adequately express her feelings, she first turned to music as a means of expression and, later in life, to writing. In 1914, at the age of 24, she married Archie Christie, a World War I fighter pilot. While he was off at war, she worked as a nurse. It was while working in a hospital during the war that Christie first came up with the idea of writing a detective novel. Although it was completed in a year, it wasn't published until 1920, five years later.

About the Author
Very prolific British author of mystery novels and short stories, creator of Hercule Poirot, the Belgian detective, and Miss Jane Marple. Christie wrote more than 70 detective novels under the surname of her first husband, Colonel Archibald Christie. She also published a series of romances and a children's book. Agatha Christie was born in Torquay, in the county of Devon, as the daughter of Frederick Alvah Miller, an American with a moderate private income, and Clarissa Miller. Her father died when she was a child. Christie was educated home, where her mother encouraged her to write from very early age. At sixteen she was sent to school in Paris where she studied singing and piano. Christie was an accomplished pianist but her stage fright and shyness prevented her from pursuing a career in music. When Christie's mother took her to Cairo for a winter, she wrote there a novel. Encouraged by Eden Philpotts, neighbor and friend in Torquay, she devoted herself into writing and had short stories published. In 1914 Christie married Archibald Christie, an officer in the Flying Royal Corps; their daughter, Rosalind, was born in 1919. During World War I she worked in a Red Cross Hospital in Torquayas a hospital dispenser, which gave her a knowledge of poisons. It was to be useful when she started writing mysteries. A new 'Christie for Christmas'- a full-length novel adapted from her acclaimed play by Charles Osborne.
Clarissa, the wife of a Foreign Office diplomat, is given to daydreaming. 'Supposing I were to come down one morning and find a dead body in the library, what should I do?' she muses.
Clarissa has her chance to find out when she discovers a body in the drawing-room of her house in Kent. It becomes necessary to dispose of the body before her husband comes home with an important foreign politician, so Clarissa persuades her three houseguests to become accessories and accomplices. It seems that the murdered man was not unknown to certain members of the house party (but which ones?), and the search begins for the murderer and the motive, while at the same time trying to persuade a police inspector that there has been no murder at all... Spider's Web was written in 1954 specifically for Margaret Lockwood. Following

Agatha Christie
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller Christie September 15 January 12 ), was a British crime fiction writer. Agatha Christie is the world's best-known mystery writer and all-time best selling author of any genre other than William Shakespeare . Her books have sold over a billion copies in the English language and another billion in over 45 foreign languages (as of 2003). As an example of her broad appeal, she is the all-time best-selling author in France, with over 40 million copies sold in French (as of 2003) versus 22 million for Emile Zola , the nearest contender. Christie published over eighty books and stageplays, mainly whodunnits and Locked room mysteries . She is a major figure in detective fiction for both her commercial success and her innovations in the genre. Although she delighted in twisting the established form, she was scrupulous in "playing fair" with the reader by making sure all necessary information for solving the puzzle was given. One of her early books

[SW: Christie Agatha Christie Christie Christie Christie Details Fido, Martin: World of Agatha Christie Agatha Christie "s books had comfortably overtaken Shakespeare and made her the most widely read British author in the world, with only the Bible more widely translated. That same year her play, The Mousetrap, celebrated its tenth year in continuous production in London now a 47-year run! Christie was a discreet, private person who avoided celebrity and disliked publicity, to the extent of staging her suicide and attempting to disappear in 1926. At the same time, she was very cosmopolitan, and traveled widely with her second husband, a distinguished archaeologist. This heavily illustrated book by Martin Fido will surely satisfy the millions of Agatha Christie readers who crave more information about this intriguing and remarkable woman."
