Lancelot, or The Knight of the Cart by Chretien de Troyes
[Sir Gawain, Arthur's nephew, tells King Arthur that he has done a very foolish thing in allowing Sir Kay to be the Queen's defender. Sir Gawain then goes after the Queen himself. As he searches for her, he meets a mysterious knight who is riding a fine but exhausted horse. The unknown knight takes one of Gawain's spare horses and rides off, with Gawain following. After some distance, Gawain finds his horse dead of exhaustion, having been ridden to death, and continues on until he finds the knight again on foot. The knight is standing next to a cart.] [The damsel tells the knights the fate of the Queen: : "In truth, my lords, Meleagant, a tall and powerful knight, son of the King of Gorre, has taken her off into the kingdom whence no foreigner returns, but where he must perforce remain in servitude and banishment." The damsel also tells the knights that there are only two ways to enter Melagant's country: an underwater bridge and a sword bridge. Gawain chooses to cross by the underwater bridge. The knights separate. The mysterious knight comes to a castle and is welcomed by a damsel who is its mistress.] Lancelot leaves the damsel and has many adventures on his way to Meleagant's kingdom. Eventually he reaches the Sword Bridge, one of the two ways to enter Meleagant's kingdom.]

Chretien de Troyes, Arthurian Romances (Everyman's Library, 1991) Out of his desperate passion for Queen Guinevere, Lancelot accepts shame without hesitation and crawls on naked hands and knees across a bridge made of a single sword. Like an earlier Juliet, Fenice drinks a potion and pretends death to escape her marriage and be with Cliges, her true love. Yvain and his faithful lion fight against demons to prove their honor and rescue the original "damsels in distress." Behind them all sits the awesome figure of the great Arthur, "the good king of Britain, whose noble qualities teach us that we ourselves should be honorable and courtly." These stories and their embellishments come from the fervid imagination of Chretien de Troyes, one of the fathers of Arthurian legend (For those of us who don't speak French, his name is most easily pronounced "Kray-tee-en doo Twah"). Arthur never cut such a splendid figure on the literary scene before de Troyes wrote his Romances in the twelfth century, and it is arguably due to de Troyes that Camelot is a household name to this day. This Everyman's Library edition of de Troyes' work contains the romances Erec and Enide Cliges Lancelot Yvain , and the incomplete Percival , all in a "new" (1986) translation from the Old French. Geared toward students, it also contains a select bibliography, a glossary, and translator's notes.

ChrEtien drew on popular legend and history, and imbued his romances with the ideals of chivalry current at the 12th-century court of Marie de Champagne, to which he was attached. His other surviving works include imitations of Ovid and Guillaume d'Angleterre, a non-Arthurian narrative. Translations of the Arthurian romances are included in W. W. Explorations in Arthurian Legends A Literature Review Part 1: Chretien de Troyes Previous discussions have focused on writers who have attempted to portray Arthur as historical in nature. We have seen that no matter how hard these writers try, they cannot help but invent conventions because they have so little to go on. Still, their Arthur was a figure of history whose deeds could be rooted in things that actually happened and places that could conceivably be identified. Geoffrey of Monmouth started the fiction ball rolling with his History of the Kings of Briton, which introduced many fanciful notions, including the idea that Britain had never been conquered by the Romans. Wace introduced the idea of courtly love. It was up to his fellow Frenchmen to elaborate on this theme. We start with the towering giant, Chretien de Troyes. We have seen that earlier tales of Arthur drew on Welsh tales and the events of the times of the writers to portray Arthur differently. Geoffrey of Monmouth has given us the begetting and birth of Arthur at Tintagel and Arthur's marriage to Guinevere (though he calls her Ganhumara). Wace has given us the

Therefore he does well who makes the most of whatever intelligence he may possess. For he who neglects this concern may likely omit to say something which would subsequently give great pleasure. So Chretien de Troyes maintains that one ought always to study and strive to speak well and teach the right; and he derives from a story of adventure a pleasing argument whereby it may be proved and known that he is not wise who does not make liberal use of his knowledge so long as God may give him grace. The story is about Erec the son of Lac a story which those who earn a living by telling stories are accustomed to mutilate and spoil in the presence of kings and counts. And now I shall begin the tale which will be remembered so long as Christendom endures. This is Chretien's boast. (1)

11. Models Of Knighthood In Chretien De Troyes
Models of Knighthood in chretien de troyes. Chrétien de Troyes is probably the most well known twelfth century author of romances.

Models of Knighthood in Chretien de Troyes
Cliges Erec and Enide Yvain or The Knight with the Lion Perceval and Lancelot or The Knight of the Cart . Each romance contains several models of knighthood, although I will only look at those from three of the above works, Erec and Enide Yvain and Lancelot Erec Erec starts off being less than the ideal knight, but throughout the romance he learns what is needed to be a good ruler and husband. Initially he is described as having "mout grant los en la cort", (l 84) and of being very handsome. "Mout estoit beax et prouz et genz,
Se n'avoit pas .xxv. anz.
Onques nuns hom de son aage
Ne fu de greignor vasselage."
Erec et Enide , ll 89-92) Erec is shown to think about himself, but not about others. He realises that the knight with the dwarf would kill him if he struck the evil dwarf who was obstructing him thereby showing that he can look ahead for consequences well enough, and can act with a sense of measure. "Il sot bien que dou nain ferir
Et crient qu'assez tost l'occirroit
Se devant li son nain foroit."

I francesi sostengono, ma a torto,
che terra salica è il regno di Francia,
ed esser Ferramondo il promotore
di questa legge che esclude le donne
dal diritto di successione al trono.
Senonché son gli stessi loro autori
a precisare in modo chiaro e netto

Chretien de Troyes wrote in Champagne, France during the last half of the twelfth century . Of his life we know neither the beginning nor the end, but we know that between and he lived at Troyes , perhaps as herald-at-arms (as Gaston Paris speculated), where was the court of his patroness, the Countess Marie de Champagne , daughter of Eleanor of Aquitaine Chretien's works include four major poems in rhyming eight-syllable couplets: Erec and Enide (c. Cliges (c. Yvain , and Lancelot (both written simultaneously between and ). The last thousand lines of Lancelot were written by Godefroi de Lagny, apparently by arrangement with Chretien. Another poem, Perceval le Gallois , was composed for Phillip, Count of Flanders after , to whom Chretien was attached in his last years. However, Chretien only wrote the first 9000 lines of the 32,000 verses of this work. To him are also attributed two lesser works: the pious romance Guillaume d'Angleterre (an attribution that is no longer believed), and Philomena , the only one of his four poems based on Ovid 's Metamorphoses that has survived.
