Kate Chopin
Kate Chopin's "The Story of An Hour" deals realistically with the possibilties of life, individual consciousness and choice, and the serendipity by which so much is acquired and lost that we value. Set in the late 1800's on a southern plantation, "Story's" main character, Louise, faces the news that her husband has died suddenly and the resultant possibilities about the kind of life that she, as an unmarried woman, can now live. Chopin experienced married life on a plantation, the sudden deaths of her husband and father and mother, and the inspiration of family stories told by her great grandmother. The setting and events of this story may derive more from her experiences and observations than her imaginative fiction. These details, and other experiences that inform an understanding of "The Story of an Hour," are conveyed in the essay that follows. by Jennifer Haywood
General Honors 101, Dec. 6, 1995
Western Illinois University Katherine O'Flaherty was born on February 8, 1851, in St. Louis, Missouri to Thomas and Eliza O'Flaherty. Thomas opened a boat store, a wholesale grocery, and a commission house. His success as a merchant, along with his refined manners and fluency in French, made him welcome in the circles of St. Louis' upper class (Seyersted 14)

Classroom Issues and Strategies
Class discussions usually help a great deal to clear up such misunderstandings. These discussions are based on a very close reading of the text, calling attention to the myriad small clues Chopin always provided but readers do not always observe. "The Storm," being a sequel to "At the Cadian Ball," becomes much clearer in characterization and theme when students understand the groundwork that was laid in the earlier work. Indeed, without such explanation, "The Storm" hardly makes sense to many students. Since Chopin wrote everything she produced during the last decade of the nineteenth century but was too advanced in her thinking to be accepted until the last quarter of the twentieth century, she offers a fine vehicle for exploring the intellectual and aesthetic tides of American thinking and American literature. In important ways, she summarizes the nineteenth century with her fine mixture of romanticism, realism, and naturalism. But in other ways, she predicts the latter part of the twentieth century with her feminism and existentialism. I like to close one century and begin the next with her works.
