Juni 1972 aufgenommen und erschien weltweit auf den Titelseiten. Dieses Foto mit seiner schonungslosen Unmittelbarkeit änderte den Verlauf des Vietnamkrieges, denn den Amerikanern und der gesamten Weltöffentlichkeit wurde durch dieses Bild klar, was das "militärische Engagement" der USA in Vietnam anrichtete. Kim Phuc wurde zum Sinnbild der Gewalt und der Unmenschlichkeit gegen die Zivilbevölkerung in Kriegsgebieten. Mit dem Klick hielt die Kamera einen winzigen Augenblick der Geschichte fest, so dass das Mädchen auf dem Foto für immer ein Mädchen bleibt. Der Krieg ging weiter, noch ein weiteres Jahr bis zum Abzug der Amerikaner und noch drei Jahre bis zur Kapitulation Südvietnams vor der kommunistischen Regierung Nordvietnams. Der Fotograf der preisgekrönten Aufnahme, Nick Ut, brachte das schwerst verbrannte Mädchen Kim in ein Krankenhaus bei Saigon. Das war ihre Rettung, sie überlebte die fürchterlichen Verletzungen, die Genesung war schmerzvoll und langwierig. Ihr Leben wurde von anderen Menschen gestaltet, die sie als Jugendliche und Erwachsene erneut in die Öffentlichkeit brachten. Als das kommunistische Regime "wieder entdeckt" hatte, dass Kim Gegenstand eines im Westen berühmten Fotos war, beherrschte dieses Bild ihr Leben. Man setzte Kim Phuc zu Propagandazwecken ein.
