Chesterton Reformed: A Protestant Interpretation
James Sauer
I've got a problem with Chesterton. The problem is that I think he is a wonderful, wise, witty, and pious man; after reading his works, I never leave the page without feeling edified. Then what's the problem? Perhaps, the problem, if it is a problem, isn't in Chesterton, but in me. For I am a Protestant; but not just any Protestant. I am an American Evangelical Protestant. But there's more. I am a Conservative, Capitalistic, Bible thumping American Evangelical Protestant. And hold on to your seats folks, just when you thought it couldn't get any worse; I must confess, I am also a Calvinist. We all have our crosses to bear. Anyone who is familiar with the writings of Chesterton will see the great irony in my situation. I can only ask you not to blame me for this state of affairs, I didn't choose to be elected; it was irresistible grace. I was predestined for Presbyterianism. But since I have received this unmerited favor of God, I might as well enjoy it. I can only thank my Sovereign Maker for his predestination. Not only did he choose me to be among his chosen people, but he also destined me to be among that other elect who have had the privilege of meeting through literature the great mind and good heart of Gilbert Keith Chesterton. No doubt the ever volitional Chesterton would have pointed out that predestination had nothing to do with all this; he would have argued that I chose to pick his books up of my own free will. But I think he is wrong on this matter: I must respond that it is all of God, as all grace is.

G.K. Chesterton: Champion of Orthodoxy JOSEPH PEARCE Chesterton's reputation as one of the key figures in Christian literature during the 20th century is linked inextricably with the concept of "orthodoxy." Chesterton's reputation as one of the key figures in Christian literature during the 20th century is linked inextricably with the concept of "orthodoxy." His book of that title, published in 1908, was, according to Wilfrid Ward, a major milestone in the development of Christian thought. Wilfrid Ward was certainly not alone in his flattering praise of Chesterton's book. Its influence on the intellectual development of a whole generation was summed up by Dorothy L. Sayers. She had first read Orthodoxy as a schoolgirl when her faith had been threatened by adolescent doubt. In later years she confessed that its "invigorating vision" had inspired her to look at Christianity anew, and that if she hadn't read Chesterton's book she might, in her schooldays, have given up Christianity altogether. "To the young people of my generation," Sayers wrote in 1952, "G.K.C. was a kind of Christian liberator." There is also a clear similarity between Chesterton's approach to orthodoxy and that of T. S. Eliot. In

Robert Fulford's column about G. K. Chesterton and fascism
Globe and Mail , June 19, 1999) Those who love G. K. Chesterton's work and imagine that he will return to a place of eminence and honour among English writers keep running into a couple of little problems. One is the aura of anti-Semitism that persistently clings to his name. Another is the whiff of fascism that rises from the page whenever the words "Chesterton" and "politics" appear in the same paragraph. No matter that together these two subjects never occupied even 1 per cent of his career as a writer; they are significant embarrassments nevertheless, and not easy to discuss. That's one reason I was surprised to find the heading "Fascism and British Catholic Writers: A Symposium" on the cover of the current issue of The Chesterton Review . Edited by Father Ian Boyd in Saskatoon, The Chesterton Review (1437 College Dr., Saskatoon S7N 0W6) is one of the most remarkable publications in Canada. It is in every sense a labour of love, and its love flows specifically toward a single essayist, critic, novelist, poet, fantasist, editor and theologian who lived in England from 1874 to 1936. Every quarter, year after year, writers from all over the world gather in the pages of The Chesterton Review to curate his reputation.

COLUMN HOT WATER AND FRESH AIR by Janet E. Smith W hen the accounting comes and we all are asked to report why we are grateful to Father Joseph Fessio, the list will be long. Not least among the gifts he has given us is his project of putting the complete works of G.K. Chesterton back into print. Should that long evening ever arrive in which we might devote ourselves to reading all the books on our shelves, it is sweet to think that G.K. will be awaiting us. I believed Chesterton labored so hard to debunk the foolishness of his times, because he knew that all of us, himself included, are prone to latch on to the trendy. In Orthodoxy Perhaps reading Chesterton would be the cure, for he is always a breath of fresh air. Janet E.
