Digitization Project Background Information This project grew out of a desire by the Library Director, Mr. Bobby C. Wynn to see the Archives and Special
Collections materials held in the Charles Chesnutt Library be made available in a digital format for display and
access on the Library's Web pages. Originally, the goal
Collections Department digitized, which is many hundreds of thousands of pages. Mr. Wynn felt that t his would
facilitate access to the collection for all. Students, especially those in the Freshman Seminar classes who are
given assignments to research the history of the university would benefit, in addition to faculty, staff, alumni,
citizens of North Carolina and the United States and other researchers would be interested in and want access
to primary source materials contained in the archives of Chesnutt Library because there is an abundance of
information that relates to the history of the education of black people, and that making this material available

CHARLES W. CHESNUTT
Charles Waddell Chesnutt was born to free blacks Andrew Jackson Chesnutt and Anne Maria Sampson, in Cleveland, Ohio, on 20 June 1858. Chesnutt's parents had recently emigrated from Fayetteville, N.C. After the Civil War, when he was eight years old, Chesnutt's parents returned to Fayetteville, where Charles worked part-time in the family grocery store and attended a school founded by the Freedmen's Bureau. In 1872 financial necessity forced him to begin a teaching career in Charlotte, N.C. But he soon returned to Fayetteville in 1877 to become an instructor in the new State Colored Normal School. He was appointed principal the following year and married Susan Perry. During this time, he continued to pursue private studies of the English classics, foreign languages, music, and stenography. Despite his successes, he experienced constant discrimination. His continued longing to develop the literary skills would, by 1880, led him toward an author's life. After a brief stay in New York, in 1884 he moved his family (which now included three children) to Cleveland. Chesnutt worked as a court reporter until he passed the state bar examination(with the highest score), and established a successful legal stenography firm.

Buy from Booksense Around the turn of the twentieth century and after having achieved financial success in New York, Colonel French returns to his hometown of Clarendon, NC, determined to use his great wealth to bring about racial harmony through economic prosperity, in a south still reeling from the social upheaval of the Civil War. He devises schemes to bring jobs to all members of the community - without regard to 'race' - but underestimates the power of deep-seated racism to undermine his efforts. He fails horribly and loses his most cherished loved ones in the process, perhaps because he himself could not fully dispel his own Southern values. About the Author
CHARLES WADDELL CHESNUTT (1858-1932) was the first African American writer to be given serious attention by the mainstream American literary establishment. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, but at eight moved with his family to their ancestral home in Fayetteville, North Carolina. There he carefully laid out a plan to achieve the American Dream of material success by writing for the "high, holy purpose" of liberating this country from its sin of slavery. He began as a short story writer and published two volumes of short stories, The Conjure Woman (1899) and The Wife of his Youth (1899), as well as many other stories that have been only recently collected. He published three novels during his lifetime -

T
The Northern Stories of Charles W. Chesnutt Northern stories
thus reflect his vision of a newly reconstituted America, one recommitted to the ideals of freedom and economic opportunity inherent in our national heritage.
The stories, compiled and edited with critical introductions to each by Professor Charles Duncan, offer a new Chesnutt, one fascinated by the evolution of America into an urban, multiracial, economically driven democracy.
The Northern Stories of Charles W. Chesnutt presents richly imagined characters, both black and white, working to make better lives for themselves in the turbulent and stimulating universe of the turn-of-the-century North. Indeed, Chesnutt stands virtually alone as the first African American chronicler of Northern culture, anticipating such figures as James Weldon Johnson, Langston Hughes, Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, and Toni Morrison. This critical edition of The Northern Stories of Charles W. Chesnutt is a significant addition to the body of African American literature.
This book will be released in February, 2003.

By writing this entry, Chestnutt is revealing his belief that the Bible should be interpreted individually and not by the literal sense that when God rested on the Sabbath, we should rest also. Chestnutt believed by interpreting and analyzing literature on an individual basis would develop an inquisitive intelligent thought process that would assist in the progression of minorities. Thinking would enable them to focus on gaining equality and rights. Chestnutt failed to see that through religion, the hope for something better than the unfair life on Earth enabled the Negroes to seek positive rewards for the negative life on Earth and was the only thing to look forward to. It appears as if education, not religion was the main focus of progression to equality in America and this quote of "religious fanaticism" clearly proves that Chestnutt adhered to his educational values.

The Anger and the Irony
Charles Chesnutt, the first major black novelist, regains his former glory
By SCOTT MCLEMEE
A dozen years ago, when Werner Sollors proposed an edition of the works of Charles Chesnutt to the Library of America, the response was polite but negative. The publisher, whose imprint has become nearly synonymous with the American literary canon, was not ready to endorse Chesnutt the first African-American novelist with a national reputation. And a very substantial reputation, at that: In his prime, at the turn of the 20th century, Chesnutt won favorable comparison to Henry James and Ivan Turgenev.
But the author outlived his own glory. At the time of his death, in 1932, only one of his books remained in print. A modest revival of scholarly interest in his work began during the 1960s, and by the early 1990s, a serious re-evaluation of his place in literary history was well under way. Mr. Sollors, a professor of English and African-American studies at Harvard University, recalls making another effort, midway through the decade, to persuade Library of America officials that Chesnutt's time had come. "They saw that he was interesting," he says, "but told me an edition still seemed too soon."
Meanwhile, scholars were grinding out critical studies and new editions of the author's work, including two novels unpublished during Chesnutt's lifetime. "At the American Literature Association last year," says Mr. Sollors, "there were more panels on Chesnutt than any other figure." Examination of the ALA program suggests that this is a bit exaggerated: Statistics place Chesnutt's eminence slightly behind that of a poet named Walt Whitman.
