(Prayer of Chaucer)
Now pray I to you all that hear this little treatise or read it, that if there be anything in it that likes them, that thereof they thank our Lord Jesus Christ, of whom proceedeth all wit and all
goodness; and if there be anything that displeaseth them, I pray
them also that they arette [impute] it to the default of mine

have said better if I had had conning; for the book saith, all that
is written for our doctrine is written. Wherefore I beseech you

Geoffrey Chaucer

(c. A.D.1342-1400)
Online Medieval and Classical Library Release #25
Composed by the English poet Geoffrey Chaucer, probably sometime around 1385-86. The text of this edition is based on that published in THE COMPLETE WORKS OF GEOFFREY CHAUCER, vol. III (Ed: W.W. Skeat; 2nd Edition, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1900). This text is in the PUBLIC DOMAIN in the United States. This electronic edition was edited and prepared by Douglas B. Killings ( DeTroyes@EnterAct.COM ), November 1996. Proofreading by Diane M. Brendan ( DMB10001@AOL.COM ), December 1996. Preparer's Note CONTENTS

  • Balade
  • I. The legend of Cleopatra
  • II. The Legend of Thisbe ...
  • IX. The Legend of Hypermnestra
APPENDIX PREPARER'S NOTE: The prologue of this work is extant in essentially two versions, commonly referred to as the "A-Text" and the "B-Text". The "B- Text" is generally considered Chaucer's final version, and is here incorporated into the main text. However, because the earlier "A-Text" differs substantially in many parts from the "B- Text", it has been added to this edition as an Appendix. There are two recognized systems of line numbering for this work, and critics have long debated as to which is the more appropriate. The most common method is to number the lines from the beginning of the "B-Text" Prologue. However, some critics assign numbers from the beginning of each section. This electronic text principally follows the former convention; however, line numbers from the beginning of each section have also been added, and are indicated by PARENTHESIS (XXXX).

Chaucer, Geoffrey (134?-1400) In The Canterbury Tales , Geoffrey Chaucer uses homosexual relations and desires as a means to cast moral judgments on characters and to satirize them. Born into a family of wealthy London wine merchants in the early 1340s, Chaucer devoted his life to public service and to the writing of poetry. Despite his nonliterary commitments, Chaucer generated a substantial amount of poetry, not to mention scientific and religious treatises. Sponsor Message.
By the end of his career, he had revised the French and Italian models on which much Middle English literature, including his early work, heavily depended and had succeeded in using them to develop a native English tradition. It is for this reason that he was known to his followers as the father of English poetry. According to Chaucer's tombstone in Westminster Abbey, he died October 25, 1400. To understand the relationship between Chaucer's writings and gay and lesbian literary history, it is necessary to know something about the late Middle Ages. In this period, though
