Second attempts tell a dismal tale
Suresh Kohli M
ANJU Kapur is receiving considerable flak for her second novel, A Married Woman. Personally, one hadn’t thought much of her first one, Difficult Daughters either. But she is not the only one who hasn’t been able to keep up the promise of first success. Not that she is in any august company. One wonders why the second books of many of those, especially Indian English writers, who seemingly hit the jackpot with the first is a let down, if not a disaster. There is not even one aspect of the redeeming quality so apparent in the maiden attempts. There does seem to be an unspoken pattern, if one looks at Chaman Nahal’s Azadi , Namita Gohkale’s Paro , Anurag Mathur’s Inscrutable Americans , Jaishree Mishra’s Ancient Promises , Anita Nair’s The Better Man , I. Allan Sealy’s

Current Courses: COML 6040/Engl 5189: Translating South Asia Course Description Course Procedures, Requirements, Expectations The class will be conducted entirely through discussion. I may occasionally deliver brief opening remarks but I expect that my major role from week to week will only be as a facilitator of discussion. While I don't expect that we will have any trouble generating discussion two structures may assist us: first, each of you will be required to write a response piece (1 page minimum) for each week's readings; this response piece must be emailed to me by 6 p.m on the Sunday preceding a class meeting. I will collate all the responses and email them out to the class as a whole for review before our meetings on Monday afternoons. Second, starting with Week 3 each of you will be responsible in turn for making a oral presentation on a relevant issue or text and leading a section of the class discussion on it. In addition, you will be required to produce 30 pages of critical writing by the end of the semester. This can take the form of three 10-page papers, two 15-page papers or one large 30 page paper. You also have the option of writing one 15 page annotated bibliography on an author or issue of your choice and one 15 page critical essay. Due dates will vary depending on which option you choose, but you will be required to inform me of your choice by the third class meeting.

Mediocre crop

When A Suitable Boy was making waves and drawing rave reviews, there was one mocking voice: Prof. M. Krishnan Nair, the trenchant Malayalam literary critic and one of the best read Indians, dismissed Vikram Seth as a mediocre writer. He is no less contemptuous of other Indo-English writers and in his eyes only Upamanyu Chatterjee merits a ‘slight’ consideration as a good writer. "The Indo-English literature is plain mediocre. It is only the media, English-writing critics and the western literary establishment which have given it prominence. Its mediocrity flows from its dominant anti-India streak which is designed to appeal to the west. Take for instance, The Moor’s Last Sigh in which Rushdie calls a dog ‘Jawahar’ and says, "Bark, Jawahar, bark". Such writings are superficial and carry no conviction.
"Indian writing in English is very poor compared even with our regional literature. The hallmark of great literature is the spiritual dimension. World over, this aspect is on the decline. While our regional language writers show at least a modicum of spiritual dimension, the Indo-English writing is totally devoid of it. It tends to fall in the category of trash.
"I have read many of the much-trumpeted works of Indo-English writers like Rohinton Mistry, Amitav Ghosh, Vikram Seth and Shashi Tharoor. They are all superfluous. The only work which I found exciting, at least to a limited extent, was English August: An Indian Summer by Upamanyu Chatterjee.
