What others have to say about Upamanyu Chatterjee
  • "Some of Chatterjee's sentences, when he calms down a little, are very good: someone seen briskly and precisely as "desiccated skin and cannonball knees." More than this, at least Chatterjee's fictional world is also its own complete verbal world, rather than the usual contemporary verbal mixture of journalism-and-candy. (...) Chatterjee's first novel had a satiny language, rich but controlled. It was warm and funny, and running with potential; his second is less funny, wildly uneven, and dried out with effort." - James Wood, The Guardian (17/8/1993)

Review Summaries Source Rating Date Reviewer The Observer Punch Adam Lively TLS - Return to top of the page - The complete review 's Review English, August is the story of young civil servant Agastya ("August") Sen. Joining the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) which author Chatterjee himself joined at the same age, in 1983 Agastya is sent off "for a year's training in district administration to a small district town called Madna." The only claim to much of any fame for the place is that it is almost invariably a contender for the title of hottest place in India. Temperature wise, that is decidedly not popularity-, action-, or other-wise In the opening scene, Agastya's friend (and fellow marijuana-smoker) Dhrubo tells him: "I've a feeling, August, you're going to get hazaar fucked in Madna", which sets much of the tone of the novel. Not just as far as the plot goes, but also as to the mix of cultures. As Agastya explains (unnecessarily, really, but it is one of Chatterjee's few slips):

The Mammaries Of The Welfare State - Upamanyu Chatterjee
Yatin Gadgil
The author of this serio-comic book, Upamanyu Chatterjee, as an intelligent young man of 24 decided that his wanderlust was to be fulfilled by the Services penchant for frequent transfers to far-flung places. He has used his intimate knowledge of the workings of the innards of the Services with telling effect in all his previous literary forays. The present book is no different. Mention the Civil Services and mostly you would notice blank looks that say, "What do I care?" Mention the same to a group of people who have had the misfortune of proximate, prolonged and recent contact with the members of the species and you would be witness to the St. Vitus' dance or the more overt symptoms of the Post Dramatic Stress Disorder. For the Civil Services are a people for whom it is said, "neither kinship nor enmity is advised". From another angle, the Civil Services are in the most advantageous position to suckle at the mammaries of the Welfare State. Chatterjee uses a varied palette of caricatures and absurd situations to tell his tale. Confessedly, having enjoyed the black humour of 'English August', I was immediately drawn to the latest offering by the author. The story revolves around the protagonist, Agastya Sen, who considers himself over-qualified for his position and essays a condescending demeanour with underlings and peers alike. He is loathe to play the side-kick even to those higher in the hierarchy but the compulsions of the situation he finds himself in compel him to act otherwise.

The Story Production Notes In his first feature film, Benegal has managed to humorously portray a character that most likely is unprecedented in Indian movies. As a result, this movie, while comical, also serves to shatter all preconceived notions associated with Indian films. It is a groundbreaking work, heralding the arrival of a new generation in Indian cinema. Shozo Ichiyama, Tokyo International Film Festival 1995 If I were to be asked which film in the festival gave me the most unalloyed joy and delight, I would unhesitatingly choose Dev Benegal's English, August. It is a delectable vignette on contemporary India, backed by Benegal's wry humour and outstanding technical control. I hope some canny distributor will snap it up.
