When Thomas Pak is hired as a clerk at a Korean grocery, he isn't prepared for the searing racial tensions that threaten to destroy the neighborhood in which he lives and works. His tenuous relationship with the store owners and their young daughter is jeopardized by his own conflicting affiliations of race and class, and these turbulent forces soon converge violently around him.

What the Critics are Saying
"In The Fruit 'N Food, Leonard Chang has constructed a narrative voice to match the unblinking surveillance cameras hovering above the cluttered checkout counters of convenience stores. The airy angle reveals unerringly the minute and utterly banal gestures that accompany desperation and rage. Chang is patient and precise. His knack for dismantling sentiment and rendering the real is stunning." Michael Martone, author of

A young man in New York begins opening and reading misdirected letters from a man named Farrel Gorden in New Hampshire. Gorden, a working-class white man who violently hates his new Korean American boss, is on the verge of losing control. As we watch the young man, amidst his own crises, reconstruct Gorden's world, the paths of these two disparate characters soon come crashing together explosively as the young man tries to interfere with Gorden's life.
Link up to Leonard Chang's web page: http://www.LeonardChang.com What the Critics are Saying
Kirkus Reviews, June 1, 1998: "Chang narrates his passionate, downbeat tale with naturalistic distance and an authentic, even microscopic grasp of the boring, dead-end world Farrel inhabits...Chang is an exceptionally talented writer..."
Publishers Weekly, June 8, 1998: "In his provocative second novel, Chang deftly varies a formula used by Hitchcock in REAR WINDOW: a man in a position of enforced idleness becomes obsessed with the activities of a total stranger...In clean and vernacular-accurate prose, Chang painstakingly evokes the working-class lives of both characters, as well as their ethnic prejudices and misunderstandings. The deliberately slow pace of the narrative accentuates the impact of the step-by-step account of Gorden's descent into murderous rage, building to the narrator's disastrous intervention. In the end, the trajectory of both their lives acquires an air of tragic inevitability."

ISBN: 0312308434
Korean-American executive protection expert Allen Choice has doubts about his failing romance with Hispanic reporter Linda Maldonaldo while concerned with his weak business. The adrenaline that fueled the beginning of his relationship with Linda (see OVER THE SHOULDER) is gone along with the thrill. The lack of executive protection clients in the Bay area has forced Allen to accept sleazy sleuthing that he knows is way below his skill level, but allows him to eat.
Adding to his depression is his feelings of guilt for not being there when Linda's brother died in a drug-related car crash. To ease his remorse Allen travels to Malibu to be there for his girlfriend. Already feeling like a fish out of water, instead of finding a family mourning a tragedy, Allen walks into a nasty Internet child pornography venture that could leave him as the next accident victim. Readers who took delight in Allen's first tale will enjoy this story, but will quickly realize that it is not quite on a level with its predecessor. Perhaps it is the change of location, but Allen seems out of place in Malibu because he fits so well in San Francisco. Still readers will appreciate his self-deprecating doubts about himself and Linda, and enjoy his latest investigation just not the first choice.

Two years ago, then San Jose Sentinel reporter Linda Maldonado worked with private investigator Allen Choice on a case (see UNDERKILL). They became lovers, but eventually she ended their romance without explanation. Saddened he moved on professionally and personally.
FADE TO CLEAR is a terrific private investigative urban noir story starring a delightful protagonist, who is a hodgepodge of conflicting emotions that make him endearing to the audience. The story line is action-packed yet at times quite humorous as the bewildered Allen often leads with his chin in spots that could prove deadly when the case turns out even more dangerous than dealing with the lunatic Staunton siblings. Fade to Clear is Leonard Chang's most electrifying and riveting crime novel, following the critically acclaimed successes of Underkill and Over the Shoulder
As Allen delves deeper into the investigation, unearthing links to drug smuggling and money laundering, he becomes the target of larger, deadlier forces that strike a tragic blow. In the wake of personal loss, he compels himself forward in this perilous case and at the same time makes profound decisions that will reverberate throughout his life. Once again, Chang weaves a masterful tale that is as much an edgy, fast-paced mystery as it is a deep look into the complex interior life of Allen Choice, a fallible and human character who is quickly becoming a truly memorable name in the world of noir. top of the page In the opening chapters of the novel there's an extended section on Allen as a nine-year-old. Why do you think the author give us this, and how is it relevant to the rest of the novel? How does it tie into the ending? The novel is written in the third-person point-of-view, and in the present tense. What do you think of this authorial choice, and how did it affect your reading, if at all? What other novels are written in this style? What are the benefits and disadvantages for this approach?

Literature 'I TEND TO WRITE a lot," comments Leonard Chang on his novel-writing method. "I look at it, throw it out, and start over. I just threw out about 300 pages of the thing I'm working on now." Three hundred pages? Considering that this too-brief bioblurb is supposed to clock in at 300 words, one wonders what else the prolific Chang (The Fruit 'N Food and Dispatches from the Cold came out from Seattle's Black Heron Press in 1996 and '98 respectively) does with his life. Eat, maybe. The native Long Islander cites food as one of the major enticements of the Bay Area, where he's been settled for the past several years. (He also teaches creative writing at the low-residency MFA program of Antioch University in Los Angeles.) Arriving in California to attend UC Irvine's prestigious MFA writing program in '92, he's since matured into a unique, serious voice in the largely substance-free field of American letters. Most of those doing ethnic identity prose have trouble getting one character (usually themselves) right, never mind matters of form: attention to narrative craft and subtleties of community and character help Chang's work stand out from higher-profile market clutter and glutter. Chang's novels are remarkable for their ensemble play and the meticulousness with which volatile situations are imagined. Dispatches from the Cold doesn't foreground race but weaves it into a complex, larger narrative and social fabric. The result is a reality that's recognizable but sorely missing in fiction.

Fade to Clear : An Allen Choice Novel
Author: Leonard Chang
ISBN: 0312308450
An excerpt from Fade to Clear (from Chapter One) Allen Choice, a.k.a. "the Block," is getting tired of guns. He listens to his partner Larry fast-talk a Jamaican gangster, a sparkling bald black man with a gold earring and a nine-millimeter aimed at Larry's temple, a gangster who has caught Larry and the Block in this Oakland warehouse filled with stolen computers and peripherals. Larry is saying in a tight voice, "I'm telling you we ain't cops. We're just PI's. Check the ID in my pocket. We're working for Supremica and were just looking for their stuff. That's all." Larry's large, protruding forehead glistens under the bright security light. The Jamaican wears a tailored blue suit with a white shirt and blue tie, crisp and clean and alarmingly calm. A silver bracelet slides down the back of his hand as he lowers the gun towards Larry's groin. Larry suddenly talks faster, telling the Jamaican, "We didn't know what was in here. We can leave and pretend we saw nothing."
"But you did see everything," the Jamaican says in a deep, pleasant voice.

Why I Love Crime Fiction
by Leonard Chang
Picture this: You are a nine-year-old listening to your parents scream at each other in Korean, their words incomprehensible because you don't understand the language, but the savagery of their intent is clear enough. You don't want to leave your bedroom because you will draw attention to yourself, so the only thing you can do is sit and wait. You have dozens of books on your shelf. Your favorite: Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators series, with Jupiter, Pete, and Bob-the brains, the muscle, and the administrator-solving crimes you wish you could solve. You find yourself enthralled by their adventures. You wish you could, like them, fix a world that has gone awry. Or earlier: You are seven years old sitting on the steps alone because you have no friends, but you do have the complete Encyclopedia Brown series, with the solutions to the mini-mysteries printed upside down at the end. However, you are either not smart enough or you've raced through the story too quickly, so compelled by the wonder of this boy genius solving neighborhood crimes (and you would like to be similarly popular), but you've missed all the tiny clues the unbroken glasses in the boy's breast pocket, indicating that he had faked the fight; the knife buried in the watermelon, so it would have been impossible to know the length of the blade unless it was actually his knife and you have no choice but to turn the book upside down to read the solution. Then, when you see the answer, you think, Of course! And you reread the story, now seeing all the clues so clearly.

Robert Chang - Digital Illustrator
Interview by Leonard Teo, 1 July 2003 When we began searching for Advisory Board members for EXPOSÉ 1, one of the digital illustrators who had made a mark in the community was Robert "Lunatique" Chang. Currently living in Fuzhou, China, working on his animated short film "Promise", Rob plays a distinct role in the community on CGTalk and other digital illustration forums, constantly giving critique and posting his own work in progress for peer review. We took a brief moment with Rob to chat about his artwork. About Robert "Lunatique" Chang
My professional path started in art with comics/freelance illustration at age 18 (1991), and continued into the video game industry in 1998, and that's when I first got into digital art. I was doing textures and concept art for various games, then moved onto art directing. I left the game industry in 2001 for a sabbatical to work on my own projects. Throughout my creative career, I never was satisfied doing just art, I also did music, writing, film, photography, fashion design..etc on the side.
