Raymond Chandler was born in Chicago, Illinois, but spent most of his youth in England. He worked as a freelance journalist for the Westminster Gazette and The Spectator . During World War one, he served in France with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, transferring later to the R.A.F. At the age of forty-five, Chandler turned to a writing career, publishing his first story, Blackmailers Don't Shoot in the pulp fiction magazine Black Mask , His style was more thoughtful than the more prolific pulp writers, as Chandler never sold more than five stories a year, and published only seven novels in his lifetime. Several of Chandler's hard-boiled detective novels made the big screen, the most popular being The Big Sleep

45 Calibrations of Raymond Chandler
Peter Straub
1. Not long before his death, he wrote, "I have lived my life on the edge of nothing."
2. Those who may speak honestly of the ambiguous but striking privileges granted by a life conducted on the edge of nothing tend to have in common that they have been faced early on with certain kinds of decisively formative experiences. Although it is never mentioned in considerations of his work, when he was six years old and living with his divorced mother in Nebraska, his alcoholic
father, already more an absence than a presence, one day disappeared entirely. Also never mentioned is that in 1918 he was sent into trench warfare as a twenty-year-old sergeant in the Canadian Army and several times led his platoon into direct machine-gun fire. After that, he said later, "nothing is ever the same again."
3. He had no interest in either conventional mysteries or the people who read them.

Raymond Chandler : Die Tote im See
Pro-Tag-ein-Mord-Marlowe, so könnte man ihn nennen.
Alles an ihm gefiel mir." Philip Marlowe
Created by Raymond Chandler
"I see him always in a lonely street, in lonely rooms, puzzled but never quite defeated."
from a letter from Chandler to Maurice Guinness,
dated February 21, 1959, regarding Chandler. What more can I say about PHILIP MARLOWE Three Gun Mack may have been the first, Race Williams introduced the PI to the world and The Continental Op and Sam Spade may have staked out the ambiguous moral code that would fuel the genre for years, but it was Raymond Chandler's Marlowe that would define for all time who, what, where and why a private eye here. Traces of Marlowe run from Paul Pine to Jim Rockford to Ms. Tree to Lew Archer to Spenser . It's all here, from the loneliness, the quick, sarcastic cynical jibes masking a battered romantic, the love/hate relationship with the cops, the corruption that exists in all levels of society. It's all here. Philip Marlowe, for better or worse, is the archetypical private eye. By the time he wrote his famous essay, The Simple Art of Murder , even Chandler realized it.

The Falcon Takes Over (1942) (NR)
Directed by Irving Reis
Written by Lynn Root and Frank Fenton, based on the novel Farewell My Lovely by Raymond Chandler
Cinematography by George Robinson ( Great Expectations, Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man
Starring George Sanders (Gay Lawrence/The Falcon), Lynn Bari (Ann Riordan), James Gleason (Inspector O'Hara), Allen Jenkins (Goldy Lock), Helen Gilbert (Dianna Kenyon), Hans Conreid (Marriott), and Ward Bond (Moose Malloy)
This was a really silly version of Chandler's novel. Apparently, there was a series of movies featuring Leslie Charteris' character, The Saint, in the late 30s and early 40s. It was so popular that another studio decided to create their own hero, The Falcon. The series even starred George Sanders, who had played The Saint. He starred in three of the films, then his brother took over. This was the second one, and although it is not really awful, it was painfully silly. If you want to see a version of Chandler's novel, see Murder My Sweet . If you want an empty good time, watch this one.

    Raymond Chandler
    * 23.07.1888, Chicago
Hier entwickelte er schon die Handlung der sieben Kriminalromane , die ihm Erfolg und den Rang des (neben Dashiell Hammett) bedeutendsten amerikanischen Kriminalautors eintrugen: The Big Sleep (1939); Farewell, My Lovely (1940); The High Window (1942); The Lady in the Lake (1943); The Little Sister (1949); The Long Goodbye (1954); Playback (1958).
