The Novels of Robert W. Chambers
Here is a brief summary of some of the novels of Robert W. Chambers (18651933), author of The King in Yellow and many other books. I add entries for titles as I find them and have time to read them. Some of these books have been reprinted by my own Sattre Press and I may do others. Also, since these works are in the public domain, when I publish a print version I also make the original text available online. In this way, I hope the books will survive me. Your comments, suggestions and corrections are always welcome: please e-mail Bill McClain Other links:
In the Quarter
. His first novel is a tale of doomed love set in the Latin Quarter of Paris, suggestive of or the 2001 Moulin Rouge film. As a first novel it is pretty well done, although characteristically melodramatic in spots. As I worked on editing and typesetting it I came to like it very much. There are many vivid scenes that should not be missed: student painters jammed into the atelier on a hot day, street riots, a fabulous masked ball, the mad street urchin, and the long interlude hunting and fishing at a lodge in the German Alps. Several characters also appear in The King in Yellow I was startled to find rather raw anti-semitic content. Further, I think these were the author's own sentiments, at least at the time. I struggled with the decision whether to reprint the book (there are types of publicity I don't need) but in the end chose to do it. It is part of history and should not lost. I decided not to add a introduction discussing the matter; the book is what it is and stands or falls as such.

(26 May 1865 - 16 December 1933)
In the Court of the Dragon
"Oh Thou who burn'st in heart for those who burn
In Hell, whose fires thyself shall feed in turn;
How long be crying, 'Mercy on them, God!'
Why, who art thou to teach and He to learn?" My chair was near the chancel rail. I now turned toward the west end of the church. The other people between the altar andthe pulpit turned too. There was a little scraping and rustling while the congregation seated itself again; the preacher mounted the pulpit stairs, and the organ voluntary ceased. I had always found the organ-playing at St. Barnabé highly interesting. Learned and scientific it was, too much so for my small knowledge, but expressing a vivid if cold intelligence. Moreover, it possessed the French quality of taste; taste reigned supreme, self-controlled, dignified and reticent. Then I remembered that St. Barnabé was not much more than a hundred years old, and smiled at the incongruous association of mediaeval superstitions with that cheerful little piece of eighteenth century rococo. But now vespers were over, and there should have followed a few quiet chords, fit to accompany meditation, while we waited for the sermon. Instead of that, the discord at the lower end of the church broke out with the departure of the clergy, as if now nothing could control it.

Robert W. Chambers May 26 December 16 ) was an American artist and writer He was born in Brooklyn New York , to William P. Chambers ( ), a famous lawyer, and Caroline Chambers ( née Boughton), a direct descendant of Roger Williams , the founder of Rhode Island Massachusetts . Robert's brother was Walter Boughton Chambers, the world famous architect. Robert entered the Art Students' League at around the age of twenty, where the artist Charles Dana Gibson was his fellow student. Chambers studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts , and at Julian's, in Paris from to , and his work was displayed at the Salon as early as . On his return to New York, he succeeded in selling his illustrations to Life Truth , and Vogue magazines. Then, for reasons unclear, devoted his time to writing, producing his first novel, In the Quarter (1864). His most famous effort has to be The King in Yellow , a collection of weird fiction short stories, connected by the theme of a terrible play (to which the title refers) which drives those who read it insane. Apparently favouring sales and popularity over artistic merit, Chambers later turned to writing romantic fiction to earn a living. According to some estimates, Chambers was one of the most successful literary careers of his period, his later novels selling well and a handful achieving best-seller status. Many of his works were also serialized in magazines.

    a critical list with discussions
    Science-Fiction and Fantasy Books by Robert W. Chambers
    This is a brief discussion of Robert W. Chambers and, of course, of some books by Robert W. Chambers.
    This discussion and list does not necessarily include every book by Chambers; it includes those books that I both know and like. Just as with the author list itself, omission of a particular item may mean I didn't think highly enough of the omitted item, or it may simply mean that I have not yet sufficient familiarity with it. (In a very few cases, I have listed some books merely on the strength of my opinion of the author: all such books are clearly marked below, as throughout these lists, with a hash mark ( ) before the' title so you know what's what.)
    I don't pretend that this discussion is a deep analysis. My intent is no more than to give you a rough idea of what kinds of tales Chambers tells, how those tales are usually told, and what makes them and Chambers worthy; in sum, to help you rank Chambers (and the works by Chambers listed here) on your personal literary "to do" list.

The Mystery of Choice , hinzu.
