The Repairer Of Reputations

"Ne raillons pas les fous; leur folie dure plus longtemps que la notre .... Voila toute la difference."
I
But self-preservation is the first law, and the United States had to look on in helpless sorrow as Germany, Italy, Spain, and Belgium writhed in the throes of anarchy, while Russia, watching from the Caucasus, stooped and bound them one by one.
In the city of New York the summer of 1910 was signalized by the dismantling of the Elevated Railroads. The summer of 1911 will live in the memories of New York people for many a cycle; the Dodge statue was removed in that year. In the following winter began the agitation for the repeal of the laws prohibiting suicide which bore its final fruit in the month of April, 1920, when the first Government Lethal Chamber was opened on Washington Square.
The fall from my horse had fortunately left no evil results; on the contrary, it had changed my whole character for the better. From a lazy young man about town, I had become active, energetic, temperate, and, above all oh, above all else ambitious. There was only one thing which troubled me: I laughed at my own uneasiness, and yet it troubled me. It was, I remember, the 13th day of April, 1920, that the first Government Lethal Chamber was established on the south side of Washington Square, between Wooster Street and South Fifth Avenue. The block, which had formerly consisted of a lot of shabby old buildings, used as cafes and restaurants for foreigners, had been acquired by the government in the winter of 1913. The French and Italian cafes and restaurants were torn down; the whole block enclosed by a gilded iron railing, and converted into a lovely garden, with lawns, flowers, and fountains. In the centre of the garden stood a small, white building, severely classical in architecture, and surrounded by thickets of flowers. Six Ionic columns supported the roof, and the single door was of bronze. A splendid marble group of "the Fates" stood before the door, the work of a young American sculptor, Boris Yvain, who had died in Paris when only twenty-three years old.

BIO ROBERT W. CHAMBERS Lovecraft was always proud to say he was influenced by the great writers of the eighteenth and nineteenth century. He was less likely to admit it but the lesser writers of his youth had an equal or greater influence. One of these was Robert W. Chambers, a painter turned author who published his greatest work of horror when Lovecraft was only five. But it was reprinted numerous times within his life and HPL spoke of it fondly. In a way, Chambers betrayed Lovecraft by giving up horror and becoming on of the most successful writers of popular fictions of the first two decades of the twentieth century. Though fame in his lifetime came from his succession of best-selling "shop-girl" society romances and historical novels, Robert William Chambers (1865-1933) is perhaps best remembered today for his horror and fantasy stories. In his day, his historical and romance novels earned him the title "the Shopgirl Scheherazade" and "the barker of the New York society side show." H. L. Menken called him "the Boudoir Balzac." But even within his lifetime the audience for such books fell away with the new literature of the twenties and thirties and the coming of the second world war. Robert William Chambers was born in Brooklyn on May 26, 1865

CARROW, ROBERT D.
Summary Mr. Carrow is a seasoned litigator, having attended to a number of high visibility trials, both civil and criminal in the course of his career. He is experienced in managing multi-party, document intensive and complex disputes and limits his litigation and ADR involvements to substantive issues with regard to which he has acquired expertise. His practice emphasis includes alternative dispute resolution (ADR), both in the capacity of advocate and as an accreditated mediator and arbitrator. He is one of very few lawyers dually qualified to practice as an attorney in the United States (California and New York) and as a barrister in the United Kingdom (England and Wales). He holds current practicing certificates in each jurisdiction. The bulk of his international and domestic litigation and ADR involvements consist of referrals from, and employment as a mediation/arbitration facilitator by, other lawyers.
Mr. Carrow's dual legal qualification has resulted in his becoming involved on behalf of, and with, domestic, Commonwealth and other international clients and counsel regarding foreign claims brought in the USA and UK. Although his clients are, in the main, resident or doing business in the United States and the United Kingdom, Mr. Carrow's practice is international in scope. He limits himself to litigation and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), to the exclusion of transactional law. Continuing participation and involvement of referring counsel, domestic or foreign, is encouraged. Mr. Carrow practices from two law offices in northern California (San Francisco and Marin County) and is a member of barrister chambers in London, England.

18. Frank Craig Biography

http://www.bpib.com/illustrat/craig.htm
The cover and three color Craig pictures are in issue 4 of
and one in ImageS #5 Frank Craig could easily get lost in the host of "society" illustrators that cropped up at the turn of the century in the wake of Charles Dana Gibson. His work is virtually unknown outside of a small cadre of illustration aficionados and I'm willing to wager that not many of you reading this page are familiar with him. I hope this changes that imbalance a little. Once you look at his work you realize how unique and special he was. Born in in England in 1874, he studied at the Lambeth School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. In January of 1900 he was working in the American Scribner's magazine providing some of the illustrations for a biography of Cromwell. One sample is at left. Not bad for a 25 year old. He worked on staff at The Graphic , an important British weekly news magazine, and submitted to the Royal Academy and the Paris salons. He had paintings purchased by both England and France and won a gold medal for portraiture at one of the early 20th century Paris Salons. He also worked for Nash's Magazine . The fragments of data I've been able to acquire (most with the help of Fred Taraba and Ann Marshall of Illustration House - thanks, folks) indicate that he was well-respected for his color work. I've only been able to turn up the one two-color sample below and one other later in the page.

I am trying to find out about the films that were made from his novels. He seems to have had a working relationship with Miss Marion Davies. I know that she made at least one film from a work of his, The restless sex 1918. The Restless Sex (Cosmopolitan Pictures, for Paramount, 1920) - Cast: Marion Davies, Ralph Kellard, Carlyle Blackwell, Charles Lane, Vivian Osborne, Corrine Barker, Edna Rose and Stephen Carr. Directed by Robert Z. Leonard. Scripted by Robert W. Chambers. Story by Frances Marion. 7 Reels. I also suspect that she made at least two other films from Chambers' novels, The Dark Star - 1919 and Operator 13 Chambers wrote a novel named Dark Star in 1917, which has a strong female lead.
