En 1566 Rodrigo de Cervantes se establece difinitivamente en Madrid junto a su familia, ya que estaba vinculado a negocios con Alonso Getino de Guzmán, que era organizador de espectáculos y gracias a él Cervantes inicia sus primeros pasos poéticos con un soneto "Serenísima reina en quien se halla", escrito a propósito de la celebración del nacimiento en 1567 de la infanta Catalina Micaela, segunda hija de Felipe II e Isabel de Valois. Más tarde en 1568 Cervantes estudia con Juan López de Hoyos, nombrado rector del "Estudio de la Villa" . Hoyos le encarga -so título de "amado discípulo"- cuatro poemas destinados a la Relación oficial de la exequias celebradas con motivo de la muerte de Isabel de Valois, que se publicaría al año siguiente. En 1570 entra en el servicio militar, entonces absolutamente voluntario. Se alistó primero en Nápoles a las órdenes de Álvaro de Sande, luego se incorpora a la compañía de Diego de Urbina, bajo cuyas órdenes se embarcaría en la galera Marquesa, junto con su hermano Rodrigo, para combatir, el 7 de octubre de 1571, en la batalla naval de Lepanto. Cervantes enferma de malaria y padece fiebres altas, lo que no impide que pelee heroicamente, recibió dos arcabuzazos en el pecho y uno en la mano izquierda, que se la dejaría inutilizada para siempre. A cambio, quedaría inmortalizado como El manco de Lepanto y conservaría con orgullo hasta su muerte.

April 1616 The son of a Spanish doctor, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was born in 1547 in a town called Alcalá de Henares (now a suburb of modern Madrid). During the 1560s Cervantes was taught by a famous Spanish humanist, Juan López de Hoyos, at a school in Madrid. In 1569 he somehow ended up working as a valet to a Cardinal Giulio Acquaviva in Rome (some allege that Cervantes fled from Spain because he had a warrant out for his arrest after wounding a man in a duel). In 1570 he joined the Spanish army in the then-Spanish territory of Naples. He fought in the naval battle of Lepanto in 1571, part of a war between Christian Europe and Islamic Turkey over Cyprus and dominance of the Mediterranean. Cervantes was fairly badly wounded on the chest and head. He lost the use of his left hand and would subsequently show off his scars to anyone who'd listen. Despite his injuries, Cervantes continued to fight in various campaigns and build up a reputation as a soldier, and received commendations from various Spanish dignitaries. In 1575 he decided to go back to Spain, and boarded the 'El Sol', part of a fleet bound for Barcelona. As luck would have it, a storm blew up and separated the El Sol from the rest of the convoy. A Berber pirate ship captured the El Sol and Cervantes was sold into a life of slavery in Algiers. By an even worse stroke of misfortune, his captors found the letters of recommendation he had received and decided to set an astronomically high ransom on his freedom of 500 gold pieces. His family could not afford it. Over the following five years Cervantes made four escape attempts. Finally in 1580 a Spanish religious order, the Trinitarian Friars, paid his ransom and he finally made it home to Spain.

Welcome to this digital exhibit of translations and illustrations of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra's novel Don Quixote de la Mancha The exhibit features the holdings of the George Peabody Library and was curated by Harry Sieber from the Johns Hopkins University Department of Hispanic and Italian Studies. with assistance from Cynthia Requardt , the William Kurrelmeyer Curator of Special Collections at the Milton S. Eisenhower Library on the Johns Hopkins University campus. There are two possible ways to proceed through this exhibit: Tour 1 This tour walks through the exhibit station by station. At each station there may be an image, a legend, and associated text. There are a total of thirty five stations.
