Cather, Willa (1873-1947)
page: One of America's premier literary artists in the earlier twentieth century, Willa Cather reflected her own lesbianism in the creation of strong women characters and in the exploration of male homosexuality. In 1922, Cather declared that the power and quality of art arise from "the inexplicable presence of the thing not named," from "whatever is felt upon the page without being specifically named there." For decades, this remark in "The Novel Demeuble" was interpreted strictly in aesthetic terms as a statement of Cather's commitment to classical principles of starkness and simplification in art. Sponsor Message.
Recently, however, the psychosexual implications of "the thing not named" have moved into the foreground, as biographers and critics have begun to grapple with how Cather's lesbianism, a fact of her life long ignored or denied, may have shaped both the form and the content of her writing. Nebraska's first lady of lettersthe award-winning author of twelve novels and several collections of short fictionwho shared her life for nearly forty years with Edith Lewis, has thus been liberated from the stereotypes of the celibate artist or the sexless spinster whose reticence on the subject of heterosexuality was generally viewed as a sign of repression.

Cather, Willa Biography
Willela Siebert Cather (1873-1947) "She was a good artist, and all true art is provincial in the most realistic sense: of the very time and place of its making, out of human beings who are so particularly limited by their situation, whose faces and names are real and whose lives begin each one at an individual unique center. Indeed, Willa Cather was as provincial as Hawthorne or Flaubert or Turgenev, as little concerned with aesthetics and as much with morals as Tolstoy, as obstinately reserved as Melville. In fact she always reminds me of very good literary company, of the particularly admirable masters who formed her youthful tastes, her thinking and feeling." ( Katherine Anne Porter in Lesbian and Bisexual Fiction Writer s, ed. by H. Bloom, 1997) Willa Siebert Cather was born in Back Creek Valley (now Gore), near Winchester, Virginia. At the age of nine she moved with her family to a farm near Red Cloud, in the Nebraska settler country. There she grew up among the immigrants from Europe, most of them coming from Scandinavia, who were establishing homesteads on the Great Plains. The wide open spaces, bare "as a piece of sheet iron", and its people formed the background for half of Cather's novels and many short stories depicting the frontier life on the American plains. The new ranch was not a success, and in 1884 the family moved to the small railroad town of Red Cloud, where Cather's father opened an insurance business. Cather was educated at home, and later she attended Red Cloud High School. From an early age, Cather was troubled by her sexual identity. She preferred to dress in men's clothing and as a teenager she began signing her name "William Cather, Jr." and later Dr. Will." Cather was also active in community theater productions and often took male roles. At the age of fifteen she was in charge of the local newspaper for three months - her father had foreclosed a mortgage on the newspaper, and because he was not a journalist, he left the paper to Willa.

Cather, Willa Sibert [s I u u r] Pronunciation Key Cather, Willa Sibert , American novelist and short-story writer, b. Winchester, Va., considered one of the great American writers of the 20th cent. When she was nine her family moved to the Nebraska prairie frontier. She graduated from the Univ. of Nebraska in 1895 and worked as a journalist and as a teacher in Pittsburgh. In 1904 she went to New York City. The publication of The Troll Garden (1905), her first collection of short stories, led to her appointment to the editorial staff of McClure's Magazine. She eventually became managing editor and saved the magazine from financial disaster. After the publication of Alexander's Bridge in 1912, she left McClure's and devoted herself to creative writing. For many years she lived quietly in New York City's Greenwich Village. The first of her novels to deal with her major theme is O Pioneers! (1913), a celebration of the strength and courage of the frontier settlers. Other novels with this theme are One of Ours (1922; Pulitzer Prize), and

Cather, Willa Old Mrs. Harris
Genre Short Story (52 pp.) Keywords Aging Children Death and Dying Empathy ... Pregnancy Summary This work, originally entitled "Three Women," is a semi-autobiographical story of Willa Cather, her mother and grandmother, four younger childrenall boysthe father, and a servant girl, who all lived together in a small midwestern town. The roles of the three women are beautifully described: the gentle grandmother who cared for and taught the children, her daughter, a displaced "southern belle" who was spoiled in many ways but wise and loving with her children, and her granddaughter, a teenager set upon her own needs and ambitions but dutiful toward her family. Another part of the story is the relationship of this family to a well educated neighbor couple who "kept a tender watch over the comings and goings of the household." It was in their home that the granddaughter found a library she could use and encouragement for her studies. Eventually it was this couple who made it possible for her to attend college.

Domestic Goddess Willa Cather was born in December of 1873. Like many other authors, Cather worked a variety of jobs, from journalist, to teacher, to editor of McClure's magazine . She won a Pulitzer prize in 1923 for One of Ours , however, this was not the only honor she received. in Virginia , she imagined that, "I had left even their spirits [her grandparents] behind me. The wagon jolted on, carrying me I knew not whither. . . . Between that earth and sky I felt erased, blotted out" (qtd in the foreword to x). Cather understood the coming change between cultures; she saw the immigrant children, like Ántonia, moving away from the culture of their parents and into a kind of uneasy Americanism. She said of these new inhabitants of the Midwest, "It is perhaps natural that they should be very much interested in material comfort, in buying whatever is expensive and ugly" since they "were reared amid hardships" (qtd. in the foreword to xiii).
