About the Author
American novelist noted for her novels about immigrants struggling to make a living in the Midwest during the late 1800s. Various critics have placed Cather among feminist writers, antifeminist writers, and even lesbian writers. She authored 12 novels, the most popular of which include My Antonia O Pioneers! The Song of the Lark (1915), and Death Comes for the Archbishop (1927). In her works Cather created strong female characters, who had the courage and vision to face all obstacles in their difficult lives. Willa Cather was born in Back Creek Valley (now Gore), near Winchester, Virginia. At the age of nine she moved with her family to a farm near Red Clour, in the Nebraska settler country. There she grew up among the immigrants from Europe, most of them coming from Scandinavia, who were establishing homesteads on the Great Plains. This milieu, wide opren spaces with its people forms the background for half of Cather's novels and many short stories depicting the frontier life on the American plains. The new ranch was not a success, and in 1884 the family moved to the small railroad town of Red Cloud, where Cather's father opened an insurance business. Cather was educated at home, and later she attended Red Cloud High School. From an early age, Cather was troubled by her sexual identity. She preferred to dress in men's clothing and as a teenages she began signing her name "William Cather, Jr." and later Dr. Will." Cather also was active in community theater productions and often took male roles.

Willa Cather
BIO
Willa Sibert Cather was born in the home of her maternal grandmother in 1873 in the bluegrass region of western Virginia. Cather’s name was originally Willela (after her father’s younger sister who died in childhood), but the family always called her "Willie." They did this because as a child Willa altered her name in the family Bible and insisted that she was named after her uncle William Sibert Boak.
Throughout her college years Cather continued to write for The Journal and whenever the chance to earn money writing for the paper arose, Cather would put aside her school work to fill the pages of the paper. In the two years she wrote for The Journal she produced over 300 pieces, many essay length. Cather became The Journal’s drama critic and she "quickly made a name for herself." In addition to her school work and writing for the paper, Cather also did some practice teaching during her senior year. By the time Cather graduated from the University in 1895, she had a plethora of experience in the writing field.
There is no proof that Cather ever came close to marriage. The men she loved the most were her father and brothers. In her book WILLA CATHER: The Emerging Voice, Sharon O’Brien discusses Cather’s sexuality. She dwells predominantly on Cather’s relationship with her beloved friend Louise Pound. After her affair with Pound ended, Cather found "more enduring and supportive relationships" with Isabelle McClung and later with Edith Lewis, yet she never declared publicly that she was in fact a lesbian.

As the previous reviewers have noted, this is a clever, wonderfully written book that makes sense of Cather and mincemeat of decades of politically oriented criticism. It is disheartening to read of all the absurdity that has been written about Cather (and, by extension, so many other wonderful writers)and realize the amount of dreadful criticism, narrow thinking and senseless writing that is being generated and propagated by the academic presses. This book is a breath of fresh air, showing t...

Willa Cather
Willa Sibert Cather was born in Back Creek Valley, Virginia., on December. 7, 1873. She died on April. 24, 1947. Cather's work made her one of the most important American novelists of the first half of the 20th century. When Cather was nine, her family homesteaded in pioneer Nebraska. She was a tomboy at home in the saddle. enjoyed distinguished careers as journalist, editor, and fiction writer. Cather is most often thought of as a chronicler of the pioneer American West. Critics note that the themes of her work are intertwined with the universal story of the rise of civilizations in history, the drama of the immigrant in a new world, and views of personal involvements with art. Cather's fiction is characterized by a strong sense of place, the subtle presentation of human relationships, an often unconventional narrative structure, and a style of clarity and beauty.
In 1895, Cather graduated from the University of Nebraska. She had first arrived at the University dressed as William Cather, her opposite sex twin. While in college, she fell passionately in love with Louise Pound, a fellow student and athlete. In her book column published in the Lincoln, Nebraska Journal , she condemned Oscar Wilde in 1985. Her first books were a poetry collection

Willa Cather (1873-1947)
Willa Cather's reputation as one of America's finest novelists rests on her novels about Nebraska and the American Southwest. These novels express her deep love of the land and her distaste for the materialism and conformism of modern life. Devoted to values such as the importance of family and the need for human courage and dignity, she created strong female characters whose sort of strength and determination had previously been attributed only to men. Of her twelve novels, "My Antonia" and "Death Comes for the Archibishop" are considered the finest. You can take a look at one of her novels, "O Pioneers!"

Biography of Willa Cather
About the Author

Willa Cather was born on December 7, 1875 in Back Creek Valley (a small farming community close to the Blue Ridge Mountains) in Virginia. She was the eldest child of Charles Cather, a deputy Sheriff, and Mary Virginia Boak Cather. The family traces its ancestors to Ireland, from which they settled in Pennsylvania in the 1750's. In 1883 the Cather family moved to join Willa's grandparents William and Caroline and her uncle George in Webster County, Nebraska. At the time her family included Willa's two brothers, a sister Jessica and her grandmother Rachel Boak who lived with them. A year later they moved to Red Cloud, a nearby railroad town, where her father opened a loan and insurance office. The family never became rich or influential, and Willa attributed their lack of financial success to her father, whom she claimed placed intellectual and spiritual matters over the commercial. Her mother was a vain woman, mostly concerned with fashion and trying to turn Willa into "a lady", in spite of the fact that Willa defied the norms for girls and cut her hair short and wore trousers. While living in the town Willa met Annie Sadilek, whom she later used for the Antonia character in My Antonia Willa graduated from Red Cloud High School in 1890. She soon moved to the state capitol in Lincoln in order to study for the entrance at the University of Nebraska. She was accepted and spent time editing the school magazine and publishing articles and play reviews in the local papers. In 1892 she published her short story "Peter" in a Boston magazine, a story that later became part of her novel
