Nació en el Distrito Federal en 1925. Vivió su infancia y adolescencia en Comitán, Chiapas; falleció en Tel Aviv en 1974. Estudió la licenciatura y la maestría en Filosofía en la UNAM. Fue promotora cultural en el Instituto de Ciencias y Artes en Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas; en el Instituto Nacional Indigenista en San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas; directora general de información y prensa de la UNAM; profesora de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la UNAM. Al momento de su muerte era embajadora de México en Israel. Entre otros reconocimientos, obtuvo el Premio Chiapas 1958 por Balún Canán , el Premio Xavier Villaurrutia 1961 por Ciudad Real, el Premio Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz por Oficio de tinieblas, el Premio Carlos Trouyet de Letras 1967 y el Premio Elías Sourasky de Letras 1972. Don’t be worried if you don’t understand all the points he is making, as some of it is difficult. When reading the poems, you might like, initially, to skip some of the longer ones at the beginning, and come back to them later when you have a sense of what her major themes and concerns are. Think about the following points: From what viewpoint does Castellanos retell (masculine) mythology, whether that of Ancient Greece or that of Christianity, or that of the indigenous peoples of Mexico? (See for example, ‘Lamentación de Dido’, ‘Testamento de Hécuba’, ‘Malinche’, ‘Se habla de Gabriel’, ‘Nazareth’.) Back Issues Rosario Castellanos Marking its first translation into English, The Book of Lamentations (Oficio de tinieblas) by Rosario Castellanos, was recently published in New York by Marsilio Publishers. In a masterful translation, Esther Allen maintains the lyricism She enrolled in the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters at UNAM, where she later would receive a Master Degree in Philosophy and where she enjoyed the company of people with interests similar to hers that would have been regarded as "outsiders" anywhere else. She had found a place amongst her friends Dolores Castro, the Nicaraguan poet/priest Ernesto Cardenal, the Guatemalan short story writer Augusto Monterroso and the great Mexican poet Jaime Sabines. From then on she began publishing her works: poetry, short stories, essays, plays and novels. Regarding her prose, her achievements were as noteworthy as her eleven volumes of poetry. Her collections of short stories Ciudad Real Los convidados de agosto and Album de familia , and her two novels and The Book of Lamentations , belong to the so called "Cycle of Chiapas", where the realism in favor of the Indians of the Mexican revolution came together with the Latin American magical realism of the fifties and sixties.
