Born 8 February 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah his childhood was spent under 'supervision' of a flophouse proprietor. Between the ages of fourteen and twenty-one he stole more than 500 cars (bis his own reckoning). Frequent periods in approved schools in consequence. In 1947 met Ginsberg and Kerouac in New York, and became the model for Dean Moriarty, the main character in Kerouac's novel On the Road During the 50s he worked as breakman for the Southern Pacific Railroad in San Francisco. Married Carolyn Robinson. In 1957 Between 1958 and 1960 he spent time in San Quentin prison for illegal possession of two joints of marijuana. In 1964 became Ken Kesey's driver on the Merry Prankster bus tour to Timothy Leary's psychedelic commune in Milbrook, New York (decribed by Tom Wolfe in Electric Kool Aid Acid Test Died 4 February 1968 from an overdose of alcohol and sleeping pills beside the railroad tracks near in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

O Pioneers! by Walt Whitman) When the origins and influence of the Beat Generation are considered, we see it as a post-war movement associated with large American cities with an artistic tradition. New York, at first, where the original core of beat writers met around the Columbia University campus, and a decade later in San Francisco. But in between these two cities, there's another place where Kerouac, Ginsberg and to an extent, Burroughs, fit in and made lifelong friends. Denver Colorado was home not only to Neal Cassady, but to a whole group of young people who remain largely unknown, but who's lives reflect the working class aspect of beat culture, and also show us how close to the real roots of American culture beat culture actually is. Allen Ginsberg told his friend Robert La Vigne that after Howl's publication he got more mail from the mid west than from the big costal cities. Maybe that sums it up. The Cassady Project Director's Notes University of Idaho May 2002 Neal Cassady was the man behind a movement, and a man upon whom a movement was built. Neal Cassady is "Dean Moriarty" in Kerouac's classic On the Road. He is "Cody" in the follow up book Visions of Cody. Cassady was mentioned in Ginsburg's Howl as "N.C., secret hero of these poems." Simply put, Neal Cassady is the unsung hero of the beat generation. I stumbled upon a letter written by Cassady to his children from prison. The letter was filled with parental wisdom, and it seemed to defy the beat generation icon. After further research, it was clear that I wanted to devise a piece of theatre around the life of Neal Cassady. I gathered a cast of two, Virginia Sutfin and Adam Pitman, and with them, began delving into the writings of Kerouac, Ginsburg, Neal Cassady, Carolyn Cassady, and many others looking for anything we could find about the man and his influence. Once the bulk of our research was completed, we began to improvise ways of using these texts in theatrical ways. For example, we arranged, or braided, together selections from various texts. As a way of invoking the audience, we began the piece with Virginia singing "Pull My Daisy," a song written by David Amram, Kerouac, Cassady, and Ginsburg. From there we skipped to a letter known as "the Great Sex Letter," written by Cassady to Kerouac in the spring of 1947. The letter tells the story of Neal meeting and seducing a young woman on a bus. We staged this meeting and seduction using only Neal's words as dialogue. This created an interesting effect. The audience saw Neal in the situation, and they saw Neal describing the situation moving in and out of the action. We continued this method of compiling and arranging the texts.

Cassady and Kerouac began a series of adventures that would later become Kerouac's On The Road . They raced across the U.S.A. and Mexico, with Cassady at the wheel. Kerouac had the idea to write the book the way Cassady talked, in a rush of mad ecstasy, without self-consciousness or mental hesitation. It worked: 'On The Road' became a literary sensation.

Fue su vida, que no su obra, la que le convirtió en prototipo del beat por excelencia. Así, mientras Ginsberg le dedicaba algunos de sus más célebres poemas -"Aullido", "El automóvil verde"-, Kerouac se inspiraba en él para crear a su Dean Moriarty de 'En la carretera' y a su Cody Pomeray de 'Ángeles de desolación', 'Los vagabundos del Dharma' y 'Big Sur'. Como se ve, pese a la parquedad de su bibliografía, méritos no le faltan a Cassady para formar entre la plana mayor de los heterodoxos y alucinados. Hijo de un barbero, alcohólico empedernido, Neal nació en el Denver en 1942. "Entre los cientos de criaturas aisladas que recorrían las calles de la parte baja de Denver, no había ni una sola tan joven como yo. Entre aquellos hombres tristes que se habían entregado, cada uno de ellos por sus propias razones, a la tarea de concluir sus días como miserables borrachos, sólo yo, como copartícipe de su forma de vida, representaba la única réplica de su propia infancia, a la que podían volver a diario la vista". Apunta el mismo Neal sobre su infancia en el comienzo de 'El primer tercio'.
