One of the features of Kesey's Acid Tests were these monologues that Cassady would give while the Grateful Dead played in the background. These were recorded on tape and stashed in the Prankster archives. This particular rap may have come from the Portland, Oregon Acid Test that happened around Christmas, 65 or New Year's day 66 (I have conflicting dates on this). Another such rap has been published in Hank Harrison's book, The Dead , which was recorded the first time the Grateful Dead played the Straight Theater. If anyone has more detailed information on all this, please email me at colinp@halcyon.com.

Neal Cassady met Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg in December, 1946 while the latter two were attending Columbia University. Kerouac's novel On The Road , written in 1951 and published in 1957 is about Neal Cassady, who is Dean Moriarty in the book. From Neal Cassady, according to one of Kerouac's biographers, Jack learned that fiction isn't always false. In 1958, Cassady was arrested and sent to the San Quentin jail for smuggling marijuana. Paroled in 1960, he then met Ken Kesey and his countercultural band of Merry Pranksters. Cassady joined the group and became "Speed Limit" the never-braking driver of the cruise bus, Furthur, that transported the Pranksters in their wild and psychedelic romps. Cassady died in 1968 of "general congestion" after having collapsed by some railroad tracks in Mexico. Cassady's influence on the culture is significant considering very little of what he wrote has been published. It is not very clear that he wrote very much anyway. His association with the Beat Generation writers and the Merry Pranksters has enshrined Cassady in the pantheon of "hipsters" and we delight more in the legend that is Neal Cassady, and less, perhaps, then in the man himself. Neal Cassady
Although his name is unrecognizable to many, Neal Cassady is one of those rare individuals whose existence changed the culture of a nation. In fact he was such an integral part of the cultural revolution birthed with the Beats and set ablaze by the Hippies that Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead was to later describe Cassady as “a tool of the cosmos.” Born February 8, 1926, Neal Cassady entered this world the way he would one day be immortalized – on a road trip. He was born by the side of the road, in Salt Lake City Utah, a quick stop over on his family's journey to Hollywood in search of better prospects. Some 20 years later, a series of road trips with writer Jack Kerouac would more fully birth his place in history. Cassady met Kerouac in 1946 on a trip from Denver, Colorado to visit hometown pal Hal Chase, then attending Columbia University. There Cassady was also introduced to a young poet named Allen Ginsberg . While only Ginsburg would chase Cassady for his bed, both young writers were equally enamored of the charismatic and utterly uninhibited Cassady who was like nothing they – or anyone else – had ever seen before. Later to be called “The Fastest Man Alive”, Cassady would become the driving force that inspired both men in their ground breaking literary works, "On The Road" and "Howl". It was his "continuous chain of undisciplined thought", as Cassady called it, expressed in his letters to Kerouac and Ginsberg that became the unselfconscious, raw style adopted by the Beats. But it was also Cassady himself that they sought to capture. Kerouac acknowledged that his friend was the model for Dean Moriarity in "On The Road" and Cody in “Visions of Cody”. Ginsberg was to call “N.C” the secret hero of his poem “Howl”.

Neal Cassady BACK Neal Cassady was born on Febuary 8th 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah, and died on Febuary 4th 1968 in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico aged 42. Cassady was the inspiration for the character 'Dean Moriarty' in Jack Kerouac's bestselling novel 'On the Road'. "...to have seen a specter isn't everything, and there are death masks piled, one atop the other, clear to Heaven..." Neal Cassady- "Joan Anderson" Letter to Jack Kerouac Cassady grew up with his alcoholic father in skid row hotels in Denver, Colorado. Before he was 21 yrs old he claimed to have stolen around 500 cars to joyride with girlfriends, and actually served 15 months in reform schools for these crimes. In 1945 Cassady met a Columbia University student named Hal Chase who was home in Denver for the summer. Chase had gotten to know Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs and others the previous spring in New York. When Chase returned to Columbia Uni., Cassady wrote him letters that Chase showed to Kerouac and friends. In December 1946, straight out of a reformatory, Cassady took a bus to New York with his teenage wife, Luanne Henderson, and Chase introduced him to Kerouac and Ginsberg.

Wagons full of whiskey joined the settlers and prospectors who followed the Arkansas River Trail or the Smokey Hill Trail to the new town of Denver at the confluence of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek. A series of roadhouses had grown along those trails and they were often the first buildings or public buildings of new towns. Wagons arriving in Denver with liquor were often dismantled and the wood and canvas reused to make crude saloons, and many early farmers converted their buildings to roadhouses. Four Mile House on the Cherry Creek route to Denver, described as ‘a neat little tavern’ with cold well water and strong drink in 1866 is now a museum and state park Denver was founded in 1858 and by 1860 had a population of 5000. Neal Cassady
Neal Cassady died in Mexico February 8, 1968.
He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1926. His alcoholic father raised him in the slums of Denver, where, by the age of 16, Cassady had stolen over 400 cars to go out joyriding with girlfriends. And he spent time in juvenile detention centers and reform schools. He developed great street-smarts, a charming charisma, and a fast-paced fun-loving lifestyle.
At the age of 24, he took his teenage wife LuAnne with him to New York, where he met Alen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, who he later took on roadtrips back and forth across the country. Cassady said he would teach him to drive if Kerouac would teach him to write. But, ironically, it was Kerouac who picked up his writing style from Cassady. For Kerouac was unable to find a format or style to put his journals into publishable form until he adopted the frantic stream-of-conscienceness style from Cassady's later letters to him. Kerouac's classic "On the Road" was written in this style, and chronicled their roadtrips together. The character Dean Moriarty is really Cassady, who is often the main character of other novels, including "Visions of Cody," "Dharma Bums," "Big Sur," and "Desolation Angels."
In 1948 Cassady married his second wife, Carolyn, who gave birth to three children: Jami, Joanne, and John Allen, who was named after Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg.

Neal Cassady, one of the most enigmatic of the Beat personalities, did not publish a book during his lifetime. Rather he was a driving inspiration to his friends, appearing often in their writings; the character of The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test
Born on the road on February 18, 1926 enroute from Des Moines, Iowa to California, Neal's recently married parents pulled their top-heavy Ford house-truck into Salt Lake City, where Maude Cassady gave birth to her ninth child in a charity hospital. After the Cassady's arrived in Hollywood, Neal Sr. opened a barbershop on the corner of Hollywood and Vine, and the future looked promising.
Each morning Neal made his way to the Metropolitan's communal bathroom, encountering men with the D.T.'s along the way. He dressed himself and went to the mission, where he had his breakfast of oatmeal, toast and coffee. He watched the poker and pinochle games in the lobby of the Metropolitan, and each Saturday he went to the Zaza barbershop, where his father, smelling of pomade and talcum, worked the third chair.
Neal recalled this as the idyllic period of his youth. It ended when he moved into the Snowden Apartments with his mother, his baby sister and his 12 year old half-brother, Jimmy. Although life with his mother in a real home ostensibly offered a more nurturing atmosphere for a child, Jimmy was a sadist. He had previously drowned cats in toilets, and he now saw Neal as his victim - in - residence, incarcerating him in the Murphy bed.
