Raymond Carver Nelson was still feeling in his pockets. He took a wallet from a pocket inside the suit coat and put it on the table. He patted the wallet. "Five big ones there. Listen here," he said to Donna. "I going to give you two bills. You with me? I give you two big ones, and then you French me. Just like his woman doing some other big fellow. You hear? You know she got her moth on somebody's hammer right this mintue while he here with his hand up your skirt. Fair's fair. Here." He pulled the corners of the bills from his wallet. "Hell, here another hundred for your good friend, so he won't feel left out. He don't have to do nothing. You don't have to do nothing," Nelson said to me. "You just sit there and drink your drink and listen to the music. Good music. Me and this woman walk out together like good friends. And she walk back in by herslef. Won't be long, she be back." "Nelson," benny said, "this is no way to talk, Nelson." Nelson grinned. "I finished talking," he said. He found what he'd been feeling for. It was a silver cigarette case. He opened it up. I looked at the ear inside. It was on a bed of cotton. It looked like a dried mushroom. But it was a real ear, and it was hooked up to a key chain. "Jesus," said Donna. "Yuck."

Carver, Raymond Where I'm Calling From
Genre Short Story (18 pp.) Keywords Abandonment Alcoholism Cancer Communication ... Survival Summary The narrator is an alcoholic who has signed himself into a "drying-out facility." He has been there before and tries to reassure his companion, J.P., that their unpleasant withdrawal symptoms will improve. J.P. likes to talk and the narrator encourages him to do so because he would rather listen to J.P.'s stories than think about his own predicament. After hearing about J.P.'s marriageinfatuation, love, children, drinking, fighting ("who knows why we do what we do?")the narrator is able to tell his own story. His story includes a wife with whom he was once happy but from whom he is now estranged, and a girlfriend who has received a cancer diagnosis. Each woman had brought him to the drying-out facility, at each separate occasion. "Part of me wanted help. But there was another part." The narrator's ambivalence extends to his relationship with these two women. He can't face his girlfriend's illness or her son, and he knows that if he calls his wife she will ask him "where I'm calling from" and he will have to explain.

Classroom Issues and Strategies
To bring Carver himself into the classroom, I recommend the Larry McCaffery and Sinda Gregory interview found in Raymond Carver: A Study of the Short Fiction or in Alive and Writing: Interviews with American Authors of the 1980s as sources for rich Carver quotes and his own insights into the stories and the writing process. For example, Carver cites Isaac Babel's dictum, "No iron can pierce the heart with such force as a period put in just the right place," as one of his own guiding principles.
Major Themes, Historical Perspectives, and Personal Issues
In many of Carver's stories, issues of loss and of alcoholism are a part of the larger issue, which is the isolation and terror of people when a total breakdown of survival systems is at hand. The near-inarticulateness of his characters in the face of this terror and loss is significant and has been a major point of contention among his critics. Some say that Carver's characters are too ordinary, underperceptive, and despairing to experience the philosophical questions of meaning into which they have been thrust. His defenders say that Carver characters demonstrate that people living marginal, routine lives can come close to experiencing insight and epiphany under pressure of intruding mysteries, such as the death of a loved one.

Carver, Raymond Carver, Raymond, , American short-story writer, b. Clatskanie, Oreg. He was raised in the Pacific Northwest, where he often set his sparely written tales of everyday blue-collar life. His personal struggles with poverty and alcoholism also colored his work. Carver's stark, minimal narrative style and episodic plot lines are particularly effective in capturing the gritty reality of his characters and the ordinary yet often revelatory nature of their experiences. His story collections include Will You Please Be Quiet, Please? What We Talk About When We Talk About Love Cathedral Where I'm Calling From (1988), and the posthumously published Call If You Need Me (2001). Also a poet, Carver wrote such volumes as Where Water Comes Together with Other Water (1985) and In a Marine Light The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia
