Carver é um escritor americano de ficção científica de segunda linha que se estreou com ficção curta no já algo longínquo ano de 1974 e teve o seu primeiro romance publicado em 1976 (curiosamente não no seu país natal, mas sim no Canadá). Crónicas do Caos — Viagem a Neptuno data de 1994. Ou seja, Carver já tinha uma carreira de 20 anos atrás de si quando começou a publicar esta sua trilogia, baseada na teoria do caos, que nessa época assaltou quase todas as imaginações com algum interesse pela ciência, como se fosse uma autêntica epidemia. Era já, portanto, um escritor experiente. Quase um veterano nestas coisas de escrever FC. Mas não se nota muito a veterania, seja no que isso tem de bom, seja no que tem de mau. Viagem a Neptuno , tradução algo disparatada de Neptune Crossing , passa-se quase por inteiro em Tritão, de longe o maior satélite de Neptuno, acompanhando o seu planeta nas voltas pelas profundezas geladas do Sistema Solar exterior. Tritão é, aliás, o corpo mais frio do sistema solar, pelo menos entre aqueles cuja temperatura superficial é conhecida. É também um dos mais misteriosos corpos do sistema, apresentando uma série de propriedades intrigantes — daí, provavelmente, a escolha de Carver.
