102. The Most Influential Group In Country Music History, The Original Carter Family.
Tribute page features the history of the family band, pictures, sound clips, and lyrics.

The Carter Family
The most influential group in country music history, the Carter Family switched the emphasis from hillbilly instrumentals to vocals, made scores of their songs part of the standard country music canon, and made a style of guitar-playing, "Carter-picking," the dominant technique for decades. Along with Jimmie Rodgers, the Carter Family were one of the first country music stars. Comprised of a gaunt, shy gospel quartet member called Alvin P. Carter and two reserved country girls his wife Sara and their sister-in-law Maybelle the Carter Family sang a pure, simple harmony that influenced not only the numerous other family groups of the '30s and the '40s, but folk, bluegrass and rock musicians like Woody Guthrie, Bill Monroe, the Kingston Trio, Doc Watson, Bob Dylan and Emmylou Harris, to mention just a few. Just as their career was back in full-swing, Sara and A.P.'s marriage fell apart, with the couple divorcing in 1939. Nevertheless, the group continued to perform, remaining in Texas until 1941, when they moved to a radio station in Charlotte, North Carolina. During the early '40s, the band briefly recorded for Columbia before they re-signed with Victor in 1941. Two years later, Sara decided to retire and move out to California with her new husband, Coy Bayes (who was A.P.'s cousin), while A.P. moved back to Virginia, where he ran a country store. Maybelle Carter began recording and touring with her daughters Helen, June and Anita. A.P. and Sara re-formed the Carter Family with their grown children in 1952, performing a concert in Maces Spring. Following the successful concert, the Kentucky-based Acme signed A.P., Sara and their daughter Janette to contract, and over the next four years, they recorded nearly 100 songs that didn't gain much attention at the time. In 1956, the Carter Family disbanded for the second time. Four years later, A.P. died at his Maces Spring home. Following his death, the Carter Family's original recordings began to be reissued. In 1966, Maybelle persuaded Sara to reunite to play a number of folk festivals and record an album for Columbia. The Carter Family became the first group to be elected into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1970, which is a fitting tribute to their immense influence and legacy.

Born in New York City on 11 December 1908, Elliott Carter began to be seriously interested in music in high school and was encouraged at that time by Charles Ives. He attended Harvard University where he studied with Walter Piston, and later went to Paris where for three years he studied with Nadia Boulanger. He then returned to New York to devote his time to composing and teaching. With the explorations of tempo relationships and texture that characterize his music, Carter has been one of the prime innovators of 20th-century music. The challenges of works such as the Variations for Orchestra Symphony of Three Orchestras, and the concertos and string quartets are richly rewarding. Elliott Carter has been recipient of the highest honors that a composer can receive: the Gold Medal for Music awarded by the National Institute of Arts and Letters, the National Medal of Arts, membership in the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and honorary degrees from many universities. He has received two Pulitzer Prizes and commissions from prestigious organizations. Additional information at schirmer.com:

Carter hopes to improve U.S.-Cuba relations
Former President Jimmy Carter HAVANA, Cuba (CNN) Former President Jimmy Carter tried to downplay expectations when he announced his trip to Cuba last month, saying he didn't expect the visit would change the Cuban government or its policies. Still, Carter and others have expressed hope that the five-day visit, which starts Sunday, will foster an exchange of ideas and encourage improved relations between the two countries. "I think it's a great trip, and I think Cuban people are expecting a great deal out of it," said Alfredo Duran of the Cuban Committee for Democracy, a Washington-based group that supports normalizing U.S.-Cuban ties. Carter's visit will be the first by a former U.S. president since the United States broke off relations with the Caribbean nation in 1961. WATCH CNN TV CNN's special coverage: "Inside Castro's Cuba" starts Sunday at 7 a.m. EDT.

    118. Mrs. Leslie Carter, A Web Biography
Biographical information with photographs, suggested reading and links.
    http://academic.reed.edu/theatre/faculty/clinton/00msccarter/
MRS. LESLIE CARTER "the American Sarah Bernhardt" An Overview: The Career of Leslie Carter (The Heart of Maryland, Zaza, Du Barry, and Adrea) produced between 1895 and 1905 under the direction of Director/Playwright David Belasco Her initial notoriety was the result of a scandalous divorce from her Chicago socialite husband, following which she turned to the stage to make a living. At an early point in her fascinating career she was referred to as "the first star of the twentieth century," but as her career declined and costly, self-financed productions failed at the box office, recurring financial travails earned her the soubrette "the queen of bankruptettes." The ultimate in demolishing criticism was the 1911 review of her performance in Two Women. of Zaza, one of her greatest hits. Commenting on her decision to embark on the "two-a-day" shows, as they were referred to, Mrs. Carter laconically remarked: "I can weep twice a day just as easily as once." She appeared in supporting roles on Broadway in the 1920's and retired to California where, in the 1930's, she ended her career acting in low budget sixty minute Hollywood westerns.
