A tribute to carter and an analysis of her music.

Maybelle Carter
Listening to the 1952 Harry Smith Anthology of American Folk Music is an eye (ear?) -opening experience. Read about it at http://www.si.edu/folkways/folk-col.htm. But before you buy it, be warned that the material in the collection is weird almost beyond imagining. Here you will find the legendary source at which artists like Bob Dylan drank deep and found their inspiration. You will also hear what seems to be, to the modern ear, some of the most paint-peeling, off-pitch caterwauling, plunking and squeaking ever recorded. But on the very first CD, you will hear on band 17 someone absolutely playing up a storm on guitar. It is a sound you could hear at any folk club today, and with good reason, because the 18 year old woman who played the solo on John Hardy was Maybelle Carter. She has been called the founder of modern folk and country guitar playing. In the photo above she is seated on the left holding the famous Gibson "F-hole" guitar that she bought in 1929 (for several hundred dollars the price of a car in those days!) and played until her death in 1978. Maybelle did not usually sing lead with the Carter family: the distinctive and penetrating voice on the old records is her sister-in-law Sara. She sang alto but was mainly the solo instrumentalist.

184. Character Above All: James Carter Essay
Essay provides a brief look at the circumstances and events that molded the president's character.

JIMMY CARTER
Excerpted from an essay by Hendrick Hertzberg Jimmy Carter is a saint. Now, by saying that, I don't mean to assert that Jimmy Carter is perfect, or that he is a total stranger to base motives, or that he is one of the elite of God's electthough for all I know that third item, at least, may well be true. Nor am I referring strictly to Mr. Carter's post-presidential career. It is now the conventional wisdom to say that Mr. Carter is a far better ex-President than he was a President. And in this instance the conventional wisdom has got it right. No historian would place Carter among the three or four greatest presidents of our history, and not even his most fervent admirers would place him in the top ten. But as an ex-President, he has only a tiny handful of rivals..... Carter put his post-presidential ambitions this way in the opening sentence of his farewell address from the Oval Office . He said (and I should note that while I may have typed this line, Mr. Carter, by virtue of his character, was its true author), "In a few days I will lay down my official duties in this office, to take up once more the only title in our democracy superior to that of President, the title of citizen." In the fourteen years he has held that title, he has brought honor to it. He hasn't just talked about housing the homeless, he has built houses for them with his own hands and has inspired and organized others to do likewise. He hasn't just talked about comforting the afflicted, he has mounted a little known program through the

Carter studied at Harvard (1926-32), at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris (1932-35) and privately with Boulanger. Back in the USA he worked as musical director of Ballet Caravan (until 1940) and as a teacher. From boyhood he had been acquainted with the music of Schoenberg Varèse Ives and others, but for the moment his works leaned much more towards Stravinsky and Hindemith They included the ballets Pocahontas (1939) and The Minotaur (1947), the Symphony n. 1 (1942) and Holiday Overture (1944). However, in his Piano Sonata (1946) he began to work from the interval content of particular chords, and inevitably to loosen the hold of tonality. A period of withdrawal led to the First Quartet (1951), a work of complex rhythmic interplay, long-ranging atonal melody and unusual form. He returned to vocal composition for a triptych of works for soloist and ensemble. He has also continued the output of large instrumental movements with A Symphony of Three Orchestras (1976), the piano solo Night Fantasies (1980), the Triple Duo (1983) and Penthode for small orchestra (1985). His String Quartet n. 4 (1986) is in a simpler style.

Get Carter (2000) Warner Bros.
1 hr. 49 mins.
Starring: Sylvester Stallone
Music by: Tyler Bates
Directed by: Stephen Kay
Get Carter
Rating:
E-MAIL GIANCARLO DE LISI

Sylvester Stallone stars as Jack Carter a 'financial adjuster' who seeks revenge upon his brother's mysterious death. Upon returning home to Seattle, he investigates his brother's death and contemplates his own fulfillment of his life in the process. Somewhere in the rolling out of the film, we see Carter assess his own life and try to make it better by righting the wrong of his brother's assassins. After a five year absence from his brother's life, he returns and in the process of attempting to do justice, he stumbles upon confusing subplots such as pornographic internet fare, old acquaintances, and his niece who he saves from her own misery. Directed by Stephen Kay, this crime drama paces itself lightly with sudden sparks of attention getting scenes.
The minimal scenes of action are done at a fast pace, but the tone of the film revolves around the dramatic sequences. It seems as if the director made Stallone actually display the most minimalist acting skills, therefore making the plot, and in turn the film, revolve around Stallone's performance. The strophophobic sequences are a new concept that works for this film and the rough edit cuts add to the dark yet stylistic tone of the film.

The CARTER family has currently been traced back to Washington Co., AR., then moving to San Joaquin Co., CA. about 1870, and finally to Washington State in the early 1900's. Any help in continuing this line back would be greatly appreciated.
The DUNLAP family has currently been traced back to Dillard, Crawford Co., MO., in the 1800's and more information is desperately needed to continue this line as we have very little information at this time.
More information is also needed on the following lines:
