[Up] EDWARD PUGH(6) 1824-1863 Born in Randolph Co., Virginia (now WV), Edward, third son and fourth child of Jehu and Eleanor 'Nelley' Skidmore Chenoweth, married, at the age of 25, Martha Jane, the daughter of William Salisbury and Lizie Crouch. Edward grew up to be one of the leading citizens of Beverly. During the Civil War, Edward, with his father-in-law William Salisbury and ten other citizens of the county, were taken as a civilian hostages by Union forces and sent to Fort Delaware prison near Philadelphia, PA. Both Edward and William died there during their internment. Martha was left to raise the family. In the 1870s, the children relocated to Preston Co., WV. They then went to Garrett Co., MD before returning to Randolph Co., WV before 1900. Martha is buried in the IOOF, Midland cemetery, south of Elkins, Randolph Co., WV. As emotional and likely to blow up as Paar was, that is how calm and unflappable Carson was. Carson opened each show with a monologue and then spent most of the remainder of the evening chatting with guests. Unlike Paar, Carson tended to avoid anything controversial and was usually content to keep his audience amused. When Carson started, the show was originating from New York and was taped on the same evening that it aired. Johnny was on all five nights and began his monologue when the show began, at 11:15 P.M. On his first show, Carson was introduced by Groucho Marx; Johnny's first words, reacting to applause as he walked onstage for the first time: "Boy, you would think it was Vice President Nixon."

The Tonight Show At 11:30pm Monday night thru Friday night, the swing band music plays led by Doc. Severson. Ed McMahon's deep rolling voice announces "Heerrre's Johnny!". The excited live studio audience applauds, cheers and howls. Simultaneously, the music grows louder, faster and stronger. The large stage curtains part. Johnny Carson steps out and appears on stage dressed in a sports coat and tie. He walks toward center stage and takes a bow. He raises his hands to quiet the audince and thank them for their warm and generous appluads. As the audience settles, he begins his opening monologue. For over thirty years this is how the "Tonght Show" began with its host Johnny Carson. He perserved the ratings. He withstood the changing of seven presidents. He saw the rise and fall of the Soviet Empire. He witnessed the birth and death of many stars. Why was Johnny Carson and the "Tonight Show" so successful? In this essay, I will explore the history of the "Tonight Show" and it's genre/type as an effort to examine and analyze the "Tonight Show's" great success. The History of the "Tonight Show" The "Tonight Show" gets its roots from "Tonight!", another NBC produced show. This show was the first of this type of late night programming. "Tonight!" was NBC's answer to the question of what to do for late night programming (Late night programming is considered to begin at 11:30pm.) The "Tonight!" show which was also owned by NBC, was run as a complemantary program to a morning show called "Today". "Tonight!" was actually first begun as an experiment. NBC could be experimental because of the time slot in which it ran. The "late show" had an older viewing audience. Also, it was not sponsored by a single sponser as many shows were in the early beginning of television but raher it was produced by the the network, NBC. This enabled NBC to have a more creative license over the show.
