S-Z Kit Carson Enshrined in popular mythology even in his own lifetime, Kit Carson was a trapper, scout, Indian agent, soldier and authentic legend of the West. Born on Christmas eve in 1809, Carson spent most of his early childhood in Boone's Lick, Missouri. His father died when he was only nine years old, and the need to work prevented Kit from ever receiving an education. He was apprenticed to a saddle-maker when he turned fourteen, but left home for the Santa Fe , New Mexico area in 1826. From about 1828 to 1831, Carson used Taos , New Mexico, as a base camp for repeated fur-trapping expeditions that often took him as far West as California. Later in the 1830's his trapping took him up the Rocky Mountains and throughout the West. For a time in the early 1840's, he was employed by William Bent as a hunter at Bent's Fort. As was the case with many white trappers, Carson became somewhat integrated into the Indian world; he travelled and lived extensively among Indians, and his first two wives were Arapahoe and Cheyenne women. Carson was evidently unusual among trappers, however, for his self-restraint and temperate lifestyle. "Clean as a hound's tooth," according to one acquaintance, and a man whose "word was as sure as the sun comin' up," he was noted for an unassuming manner and implacable courage. In , while returning to Missouri to visit his family, Carson happened to meet John C. Fremont, who soon hired him as a guide. Over the next several years, Carson helped guide Fremont to Oregon and California, and through much of the Central Rocky Mountains and the Great Basin. His service with Fremont, celebrated in Fremont's widely-read reports of his expeditions, quickly made Kit Carson a national hero, presented in popular fiction as a rugged mountain man capable of superhuman feats.

We heard the echoes of prayer chants, war chants, hunting chants of Arapaho and Cheyenne. We saw the hills dark with buffalo, more buffalo than man could count, meat to feed the plains people forever; and we heard the echoing rifle shots of the buffalo killers, who took tongues and hides and left the carcasses for the carrion eaters, the bones for us to find in the eternal grass forty years later. We saw the shadowy herds trailing north...heard the echoes of their bawling, their hoof-and-horn rattle, the sad chants of their night herde rs.... We saw, heard, smelled, felt, almost tasted the past. Hal Borland, "Country Editor's Boy", 1970 H alf a century of gold seekers, railroad builders, and homesteaders had gone by when the boy came to Colorado. The first ranch in Kit Carson County was settled in the early 1870s. There were no close neighbors, only a handful of widely scattered ranches. Records of the store where the owner bought supplies show that one year, "evidently anticipating a long, hard, winter", he bought one hundred pounds of potatoes and a gallon of whiskey. It wasn't until much later that the first real land rush and rail line arrived together in 1887. The first train, the Rock Island line, ran through in the fall of 1888. Most of the towns were built along the rail line. The railroad publicity attracted settlers of all kinds: farmers, laborers, professionals, and families.

Carson County (C-4), in the center of the Panhandle qv and on the eastern edge of the Texas High Plains, is bounded on the north by Hutchinson County, on the west by Potter County, on the south by Armstrong County, and on the east by Gray County. Carson County was named for Samuel P. Carson, qv the first secretary of state of the Republic of Texas. qv qv qv in the early 1600s, crisscrossed the Texas Panhandle, but it is not known if they traversed Carson County. American buffalo qv hunters penetrated the Panhandle in the early 1870s as they slaughtered the great southern herd. The ensuing Indian wars, culminated by the Red River War qv of 1874, led to the extermination of the buffalo and the removal of the Comanches to Indian Territory. The Panhandle was thus opened to settlement. Carson County was established in 1876, when its territory was marked off from the Bexar District. Ranchers appeared in Carson County in the early 1880s. The JA Ranch qv of Charles Goodnight and John G. Adair qqv and the Turkey Track Ranch qv both grazed large ranges in Carson County by 1880. In 1882 Charles G.
