Hayden Carruth from Clarification The most commonly misused words in our language are anarchy, anarchism, and anarchist. Every afternoon on the NPR news I hear these words applied to violence in Kosovo, social disorder in the Congo and Chiapas, scenes of mob uproar at rock concerts in Kalamazoo or Albuquerque, and the like. The situation in the schoolyard after the shooting is always said to be "anarchy." Clearly reporters and announcers have no ideaI mean none at allof the genesis of these words in ancient philosophy or of how they've been applied in serious political discourse in the western world for the past two hundred years. An means the inverse. Archy means an organized expression of social and political power, as in monarchy or archbishop. Anarchy means the unState. Often, including passages in my poems and essays, I've said that I'm an anarchist. My readers generally don't know what to make of this. "Well, there's Carruth being a windbag again," they say. But I mean what I write quite seriously, and I wish people would take the troubleit doesn't require muchto find out what the word means. Begin with Mikhail Bakunin, his essays, letters, and pamphlets. After all, for practical purposes he was the founder of anarchism in the modern world in the same sense that Marx was the founder of communism, granting that before them many others made important contributions. Read especially Bakunin's account of the Paris Commune. Bakunin was a Russian aristocrat, a Romantic in the grand tradition of the mid-nineteenth century, a captivating

Once upon a time Hayden would come to visit us in our cabin by the river far down a back road, no literary strings at all, a couple waiting by the dim light of a woodfire. I recall one visit he made when he read aloud his entire long poem sequence The Sleeping Beauty
Ten years later we read together at The Clark Art Museum. Hayden started off with a poem we first published in Longhouse, "Regarding Chainsaws". We include it here. A dandy of a poem. I was always partial to the early lean years work — where the treasure-chest anthology The Voice That Is Great Within Us was edited from his tiny cowshed writing hut, over-stuffed with books, box woodstove and postcard photo of Ezra Pound on the wall. Those elusive New Directions books of poems that came with a certain haunting quality from a certain haunting existence forever making ends meet; every single poem a gem in

The Book That Changed My Life Hayden Carruth Hayden Carruth was a National Book Award Poetry Finalist in 1974 for From Snow and Rock, From Chaos and again for Collected Shorter Poems . He went on to receive the 1996 National Book Award for Poetry for Photo Credit: Jerome Ward In response to your letter, hundreds of books have influenced my writing, and I don't mean superficially. Let's say, however, that the most important literary encounter for me was with W. B. Yeats when I first read his Collected Poems in about 1941. The books showed me that it's possible to be crazy and a poet too. What could be more encouraging? Yours sincerely

This Old Poem #10:
Hayden Carruth’s On Being Asked To Write A Poem Against The War In Vietnam
A Beautiful Mind
’s John Nash, the Academy decided to bestow honors upon the old Walt Whitman wannabe as a sort of boon to his ego. The thought is that it’s the least they can do for a lunatic who’s been through so much. Since his rediscovery in the late 80s HC has been increasingly awarded- a tell-tale sign that nothing he is currently producing is worth a damn.
Should awards be denied nutbags? No. But of his generation of nuts HC is a lesser light. Does his oeuvre really compare to that of a Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, Robert Lowell- or even a Ramon Guthrie or John Wieners? Decidedly not. A usual HC poem is basically a formless ramble broken up into lines for no apparent reason. Often the poems are political or attempt humor. Sometimes they are just memories. In a sense, it’s sad to see Academics further erode this man’s slight grip on reality by feinting praise toward him- but who ever said apparatchiks had souls?
On Being Asked To Write A Poem Against The War In Vietnam Well I have and in fact more than one and I'll tell you this too I wrote one against Algeria that nightmare and another against Korea and another against the one I was in and I don't remember how many against the three when I was a boy Abyssinia Spain and Harlan County and not one breath was restored to one shattered throat mans womans or childs not one not one but death went on and on never looking aside

The Whole Carruth A paean to Vermont's state poet in exile BY PAULA ROUTLY
photo:hank o'neal
The New York Times Book Review calls him a “tough-bird author.” The New Yorker plays up his “well-tuned orneriness.” Even friends warn that Hayden Carruth can be hard to approach. “Depending on his humor,” suggests Burlington poet Greg Delanty, “he can be a bit cantankerous.” Words like cranky, cussed and curmudgeonly inevitably come up in discussions about the 81-year-old poet considered to be the natural, f-word-slinging successor to Robert Frost. Two Green Mountain poet laureates — Ellen Bryant Voigt and Galway Kinnell — believe he should at least have served a term as Vermont’s top bard. To compensate, the former Vermonter is being honored next week with four readings around the state, one of which comes with a check and a gubernatorial proclamation. Carruth doesn’t usually go for these things. He literally pissed on a consolation-prize medal he received for almost winning a National Book Award in 1992 — he got the gold four years later — and he once wrote a letter turning down an invitation to read at the Clinton White House. Oh, and he published it, too.
