CARROLL, Lewis b. 27 January 1832; d. 14 January 1898 Lewis Carroll was the pseudonym of the Rev. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, an English writer and brilliant mathematician perhaps best known for "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland", written in 1865, and "Through the looking glass", written seven years later. He was a lecturer in Mathematics at Christ Church Oxford, and a clergyman. In his diaries he records that he learned photography by following his uncle, himself a photographer, on expeditions in the mid fifties. His speciality became portraiture, and among his subjects were some leading people of the day, including Tennyson, Christina Rossetti, and Holman Hunt, the painter. He also photographed children. Alice Liddell, a daughter of the Dean of his college, was one of his many subjects, and it was she who became the model for Alice in Wonderland. To have one's portrait taken was often a pretty daunting business. Lewis Carroll described it very aptly in a poem: "From his shoulder Hiawatha

Charles Dodgson, better known to all as Lewis Carroll wrote a book for Alice Liddell called ' Alice's Adventures Underground '. He then decided to re-write 'Underground' as a novel. Martin Gardner has already shown to a large extent what philosophical and logical jokes and conundrums Carroll included in ' Alice's Adventures in Wonderland '. And more recently a book by Duncan Black entitled: ' A Mathematical Approach to Proportional Representation : Duncan Black on Lewis Carroll ' has been released detailing its mathematical relationships. Alice is no longer JUST a children's story - but one for children of all ages. The following links lend some additional insights into the imaginative genius of the author Lewis Carroll. About the Author
English logician, mathematician and novelist, best-known for his classic fantasy novels Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1871). Carroll used the surrealistic settings of his fantasy world to question the norms of the Victorian age in a way that many critics considered his work subversive. Unlike other children's books of the time, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland did not try to teach a moral message. Carroll also wrote poetry which have remained open to all explanations of meaning. Lewis Carroll was born at Daresbury in Chesire into a wealthy family. He attended a Yorkshire grammar school and Rugby. At Christ Church, Oxford, he studied mathematics and worked from 1855 to 1881 as a lecturer (tutor). Carroll's career in education was troubled by a bad stammer. He lectured and taught with difficulty and he also preached only occasionally after his ordination in 1861. Carroll was very shy and he even hid his hands continually within a pair of gray-and-black gloves. In spite of his stammer, Carroll was able to speak easily to children, whom he loved to photograph, especially small girls. Carroll had seven sisters and his attraction to young girls was perhaps more innocent than has been imagined. During one picnic he started to tell a long story to Alice Liddell (died in 1934), who was the daughter of Henry George Liddell, the head of his Oxford college. Carroll wrote down the story and the
