Introduction:
Jorge Carrera Andrade in America
Back to Andrade contents list
IN DECEMBER of 1940 Jorge Carrera Andrade stepped ashore in America at the port of San Francisco, California. Appointed as Ecuadorian Consul General to the United States, Carrera Andrade had just spent four years in Tokyo as a militarized Japan swept through Asia and Indochina. In the past year Belgium, France, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, and Norway had fallen to the Germans. In December of 1940 the Luftwaffe had begun its bombing campaign of Britain. Dark war clouds increasingly loomed on the American horizon.

The appearance of the essay in Poetry immediately drew letters from Wallace Stevens and William Carlos Williams. Williams wrote in Spanish from his New Jersey home to the editor of Poetry

The Poetry of Jorge Carrera Andrade
Published as the Preface to Jorge Carrera Andrade, Secret Country: Poems , translated by Muna Lee, New York: MacMillan Publishers, 1946

WHEN I WAS A CHILD and first went to school, I was taught that the Equator was an imaginary line encircling the globe midway between the poles. Later, in that book from which I first learned how the sensation of distance can be evoked by the strange names of far places, I was told of a country called Ecuador. Its name had been given it because it lay athwart that line which, first and last, is a convenience of the imagination. It was, nevertheless, a real country. On the maps, I drew and crudely colored it was bounded on one side by blue to describe a Pacific shore, while across the interior crawled lines, fuzzy as caterpillars, to indicate mountains, whose peaks bore remarkable names like Cotopaxi and Chimborazo.
Secret Country
The poems create their sense of abundance, precisely because they are so filled with the most commonplace details of everyday life. The lives of these laboring people are remote from us, but not their cares; so many of them are poor. Much that we encounter at first seems strange; but presently we recognize that the immediate strangeness of things is due less to their having been brought to us from a distant and equatorial climate than to their having been seen as though no one had looked at them before.

By the close of the twentieth century, the brilliant poets that had emerged from the Americas included Ruben Dario, Pablo Neruda, Cesar Vallejo, Vicente Huidobro, and Octavio Paz. To this list must be added Jorge Carrera Andrade, an Ecuadorian, who spent his entire adult life traveling as a diplomat, politician, and poet. Despite a brief flurry of attention generated in the United States by his book, Secret Country (New York: MacMillan, 1946), published just after he served as Ecuadorian Consul General to the United States in San Francisco, Andrade has since been forgotten by American anthologists and literary critics. But in fact the late Andrade was a leading figure in Latin American letters. This volume of his poetry was selected and translated by Steven Ford Brown and is pres PRODUCT CODE: 1588381021 USA/Canada: US$ 15.90

Biography
The window born of a desire for sky
has stationed itself in the black wall like an angel:
it's friend to man,
a carrier of air.
It converses with pools of the earth,
with childlike mirrors of houses,
and tiled roofs on strike.
From high up, windows, with their diaphanous diatribes, face the multitudes. The maestro window diffuses its light into the night. It extracts the square root of a meteor, totals columns of constellations. The window is the gunwale of earth's ship; a surf of clouds peacefully surrounds it. The captain Spirit, eyes washed by blue tempests, searches for the island of God. The window distributes to everyone a quart of light, a bucket of air. The window, plowed by clouds, is the small property of the sky. - Jorge Carrera Andrade Poems From Century Of The Death Of The Rose: Selected Poems, 1926-1976 translated from the Spanish by Steven Ford Brown var site="s12gracedpoet"

The Loneliness of Cities
Jorge Carrera Andrade translated from the Spanish by Steven Ford Brown Without knowing my number,
I am enclosed by walls and boundaries
with an enslaved moon
and perpetual shadow chained to my ankle.
Living frontiers arise
a step beyond my footsteps.
There is neither north nor south, east nor west,
only a multiplied loneliness exists,
a loneliness divided by a cipher of men.
Time's race around the circle of the clock,
luminous navels of streetcars, bells with athletic shoulders, walls that spell out two or three colored words, are the materials of loneliness. Image of solitude: bricklayer singing on a scaffold a fixed raft in the sky. Images of solitude: a traveler submerged in a newspaper, a waiter hiding a photograph in his vest pocket. The city has a mineral appearance. Urban geometry is less beautiful than the geometry we learned at school. A triangle, an egg, a cube of sugar initiated us into a celebration of forms. Circumferences only came later: the first woman, the first moon. 'Where were you, loneliness
