Religion, the belief in invisible groups of omnipotent beings secretly ruling their lives, also gives people simple rules to let them cope with a confusing and irrational world. But isn't that also the working definition of a conspiracy theory? Hmm, if religion is the opiate of the people, does that make conspiracy theories the Valium of the people? These musings are the direct result of "The Travel Agent," in which Nicholas Waller invents a conspiracy theory of such seductive explanatory power that it makes the truth a pale and fragile thing by comparison. Those of you who worry about the trade deficit must realize that tourism to other countries is a major source of dollars flowing out of a country. Could you prove that the government isn't financing a giant disinformation campaign about earthquakes, crime, terrorism, high prices, diseases and the million other ills that make American travel look so much the better? Try as he might, though, Waller can't turn this idea into a story, and he loses all credibility by expecting us to believe that all the world's antiquities are fakes thrown up to lure tourist dollars anyway. On balance, a first published story that shows a deliciously convoluted brain at work.

I know that we reviewers are never supposed to admit to anything less than omniscience, but I'm also a writer and I've decided I never will understand what goes on in editor's heads. What was David Pringle thinking when he decided to publish Thomas M. Disch 's "The First Annual Performance Arts Festival at the Slaughter Rock Battlefield"? Yeah, Disch is a science fiction legend who almost never writes less than brilliantly, as he most certainly does here. But the story is not science fiction, not even fantasy, not even by the usual slip-a-weirdness-in-at-the-end standard that is all the rage in magazines today, Interzone The issue's other novelette starts out equally mainstream in tone, but is ironically far less successful overall. The founding members of the new UNLV Cancer Institute have joined together in an effort to fight cancer through their research. Find out how these committed scientists are trying to improve the prevention, detection, and treatment of the deadly disease.
BY SUZAN DIBELLA
n June of last year, a small group of UNLV scientists formally joined together in the pursuit of a noble shared goal: improving the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer.
The reason for formalizing the collaboration of these scientists was perhaps best articulated by UNLV President Carol C. Harter at the time she announced that the institute had been approved by the UCCSN Board of Regents.
"For many years," she said, "we have had faculty scientists doing intriguing cancer research. We expect the new institute to serve as a valuable think-tank for our cancer researchers while also making them more visible to the external community."
Today, the institute boasts an additional faculty member and more than eight months of formal collaboration. The team of scientists from the departments of chemistry, biology, electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering, and health physics meet regularly to share insights on their research and generate a valuable exchange of data and theories.
But the collaboration doesn't stop on the UNLV campus; they are being joined in their research endeavors by several faculty members from the University of Nevada School of Medicine and several physicians from University Medical Center. At the same time, members of the institute continue to pursue increased grant funding; the group's status as an institute is expected to enhance the likelihood of members obtaining such funding.

Nevertheless, it was a great Albacon perhaps the best ever. Hal Clement was a wonderful Guest of Honor . He held audiences spellbound with several stories of his Army days. Vincent DiFate, Art GOH , was very friendly and quite entertaining as well. It is tradition, in the Northeast U.S. at least, that a con isn't really a con until one sees Hal Clement. Don and Thomas worked hard at Albacon; Don was on eight panels and Thomas on seven. Of course, the panels at Albacon are better than at any ten other cons put together; toward Sunday mid-afternoon, the boys had something of a washed-out feeling. Don and Thomas gave a presentation on the Star Toys Museum on Saturday at 3 pm. This was a sequel to a panel called "You Can't Take It With You" at Albacon '97 ; the boys were proud to report to Albacon that yes, indeed, one could arrange to protect a fannish collection after one's death (or, as the panel description put it, one need not be a loser despite dying with the most toys.) In the audience were Billie Aul, who works for the New York State Library, and Steve Miller, who founded the Science Fiction Collection at the University of Maryland their questions and suggestions were most rewarding. Steve Miller and Sharon Lee, both originally from Baltimore, moved to Maine in 1989. They were both delightful people, and Thomas and Don enjoyed meeting them.

Steve Newman : So I thought we’d start with a blurry picture of the seminar room at Hopkins. That image seems fitting because it’s where I first made your acquaintance, a place we’ve both since departed but one that had an important impact on both of us. My first question is, "How did you get there?" Basically, what I’m asking for is a brief intellectual autobiography of how you came to be a professor of Romanticism and co-founder of the Film and Media Studies Program and the Center for Digital Media Research and Development. The blurriness of the image is in fact a result of my using a subpar camera, but let’s re-describe that flaw as a happy accident, since it points to your own skepticism as a rhetorical critic about the historicist’s faith in the picturablilty of the past. It consequently complements the empty space where your sillhouette would be if we had followed the practice set by Orrin Wang in his interview with W. J. T. Mitchell
