This unit was cooperatively planned and taught by the teacher-librarian and the classroom teacher. However, the unit could be adapted to be handled entirely by the classroom teacher. Since this unit is based on the writings and illustrations of Eric Carle, an overview chart has been included to explain how each book was used as the introduction and foundation for a series of lessons. The lessons developed around each book took approximately one week. Foundational Objectives A. Visual Art Foundational Objectives

Eric Carle
Eric Carle was born in Syracuse, New York on June 25, 1929. When he was six his family moved to Germany. It was hard for Eric to leave his home and friends. He still remembers how important friendship is to a child's heart.
As a young boy his father took him on walks through the woods and they investigated insects and other little creatures that lived there. He loved to learn about nature and now shares that love with children through his books.
He shares that it is important to plan and think about and rewrite your story before you are ready for the final illustrations. He tells the story that his Uncle August would pretend to have a thinking machine in his forehead that needed to be wound up before he could tell a story. Thinking is what writing and reading is all about.
Here is more information about Eric Carle.

Eric Carle makes many of his illustrations out of tissue paper that he has painted with designs. He uses the cut-and-glue collage process to make his illustrations. These unusual patterns work together to make unusually beautiful pictures.
Try to color or paint on tissue paper. Use many different colors and designs. Don't think about what you will make until all the tissue paper is ready. Now make a plan. Cut and glue a picture. Save the leftovers in a box. You will probably have enough tissue paper to make several pictures.

Eric Carle Author Study
by Sandy Rouleau and Wendy Buchberg
Eric Carle is one of our favorite authors. His books and illustrations are simply delightful. We have found Eric Carle's stories tie in beautifully with a variety of different themes throughout the school year and children never tire of them. In this author study, you'll find biographical information about Eric Carle; an annotated list of his most popular books; stand-alone activities that highlight the beauty of Carle's works; as well as activities that can be integrated into your other teaching themes. An Interview with Eric Carle (This biography originally appeared in Scholastic Network's Author Library.) Out of all the questions kids ask Eric Carle, "Where do ideas come from?" is the one he hears most often. Although Eric thinks it would take hours to fully respond, he offers this answer: "Of course, the question of where ideas come from is the most difficult of all. Some people like to say they get ideas when they're in the shower. That's always a very entertaining answer, but I think it's much deeper than that. It goes back to your upbringing, your education, and so forth." To Eric, ideas don't come from one place. They come from all the experiences in his life, all the thoughts in his mind, and all the feelings in his heart.

A Collection of Classics
"A Collection of Classics" takes a perspective on what a classic book is, who has written them, and how they did it. The definition the team used is: "Classics are works that have been continually read by multiple generations and contain universal themes and ideas that never fail to provoke thoughts or emotions." The site provides information about many different authors (biographies, lists of their works, and links to other sites). "Creating Your Own Classic," gives information on the writing process, publishing, parts of a story, drama, poetry, and even tips on curing writers block. "The Childrens Corner" includes information on childrens authors, childrens books and writing for children. An "Authors Timeline", "Tours", and "Interact" complete this information-filled site. I have used The Grouchy Ladybug in connection with the Californa State Standards for telling time. I am a first grade teacher and have found the book to be a great source for teaching time. I have the students each make a small clock at the beginning of the year. They are time keepers for the rest of the year, taking note of our assembly or special occasion times. The book lends itself to telling time by the half hour which is perfect for our needs.
  • Submitted by Memory Anderson on June 21, 2000
Another teacher and I made this lesson together to teach elapsed time to our groups of second graders. Before the lesson, I wrote the times from The Grouchy Ladybug on a set of 8 1/2 x 11 inch cards. I gave each child a card and asked them to write down the activity that happened at the time on their card. As we read the story a second time, I let each child read his or her card aloud, lining up the cards across the front of the room after reading. Soon we had the whole story on display. We then discussed how many hours passed between the ladybug's activities. When we were finished with the cards, each child illustrated his or her page and we had a class book to treasure!
