    Except for the elegy on Donne, which first appeared in Donne's Poems , 1633, the poems by Carew in this selection were first published shortly after Carew's death, in Poems , 1640. A considerable number of them were set to music, and numerous MS. versions of this song exist with considerable differences of text.

    Epitaph on the Lady Mary Villiers
    This little vault, this narrow room, Of Love, and Beauty, is the tomb; The dawning beam that gan to clear Our clouded sky, lies darken'd here, Forever set to us, by death Sent to inflame the world beneath. 'Twas but a bud, yet did contain More sweetness than shall spring again; A budding star that might have grown Into a sun, when it had blown. This hopeful beauty did create New life in Love's declining state; But now his empire ends, and we From fire and wounding darts are free; His brand, his bow, let no man fear, The flames, the arrows, all lie here. Notes ] Carew wrote three epitaphs on Lady Mary, who is usually identified only as belonging to the family of the Dukes of Buckingham. It has recently been suggested that she was the daughter of the Earl and Countess of Anglesey, who died in 1630 at the age of two.

    Sir Rhys ap Thomas
    Jeffrey L. Thomas controversial character in Welsh history, Rhys ap Thomas was born in 1449 and on his father's death inherited the wealth of the Dinefwr estates. Although his family were Lancastrian supporters he prudently served the House of York and vowed to Richard III words to the effect that Henry Tudor would land in Wales only over his dead body. "Whoever ill-affected to the state, shall dare to land in those partes of Wales, where I have anie employment under your majestie, must resolve with himself to make his entrance and irruption over my bellie." T he story is told that after Henry Tudor's return to Britain (at Dale, Pembrokeshire, in 1485) Rhys eased his conscience by hiding under Mullock Bridge, Dale, as Henry marched over, thus absolving himself of his oath to Richard. W hatever his motives, the fact that Rhys made a major contribution to Henry's victory at Bosworth in 1485 is undisputed. Rhys may well have entertained Henry at Carew Castle before they split up on their way north, recruiting men along the way. When they met up again at Welshpool, Rhys had a large army of levied Welshmen with him. Many of there were Rhys' men for he had raised 500 trained cavalry to support the young Tudor - stout hearted men from the tenant farms of the Carew estates in South Pembrokeshire and all expert horsemen. T he Battle of Bosworth, on 22 August, 1485, was a turning point in British history and Richard III's death was supposedly at the hands of Rhys. Rhys was knighted on the battlefield and made Governor of Wales. After Bosworth, Rhys helped rid the king of two royal pretenders, Lambert Simnel and Perkin Warbeck. For these and other services Henry bestowed upon Rhys the Order of Knight of the Garter.

    regicide n a person who kills or takes part in killing a king. the act of killing a king [L rex regis king +CIDE] In August 1660, following the Restoration of King Charles II, the Act of Indemnity and Oblivion was passed as a gesture of reconciliation to reunite the kingdom. A free pardon was granted to everyone who had supported the Commonwealth and Protectorate, except for those who had directly participated in the trial and execution of King Charles I eleven years previously. A special court was appointed in October 1660 and the surviving Regicides were brought to trial. Ten were condemned to death and publicly hanged, drawn and quartered at Charing Cross or Tyburn, London, in October 1660: Thomas Harrison, John Jones, Adrian Scroope, John Carew, Thomas Scot, and Gregory Clement, who had signed the King's death warrant; the preacher Hugh Peters; Francis Hacker and Daniel Axtel, who commanded the guards at the King's trial and execution; and John Cook, the solicitor who directed the prosecution. A further nineteen were imprisoned for life. Oliver Cromwell, Henry Ireton, Thomas Pride and John Bradshaw were posthumously attainted for high treason. In January 1661, the corpses of Cromwell, Ireton and Bradshaw were exhumed and hung in chains at Tyburn.

    INGRATEFUL BEAUTY THREATENED by: Thomas Carew (1595?-1639?)
    NOW, Celia, since thou art so proud,
    'Twas I that gave thee thy renown.
    Thou hadst in the forgotten crowd
    Of common beauties lived unknown,
    Had not my verse extoll'd thy name,
    And with it imp'd the wings of Fame.
    That killing power is none of thine;
    I gave it to thy voice and eyes;
    Thy sweets, thy graces, all are mine;
    Thou art my star, shin'st in my skies;
    Then dart not from thy borrow'd sphere
    Lightning on him that fix'd thee there.
    Tempt me with such affrights no more,
    Lest what I made I uncreate;
    Let fools thy mystic form adore,
    I know thee in thy mortal state.
    Wise poets, that wrapt Truth in tales,
    Knew her themselves through all her veils.

    The torrid, or the frozen zone,
    Bring equal ease unto my pain;
    The temperate affords me none;
    Either extreme, of love, or hate,

    Give me a storm; if it be love,
    Like Danae in that golden shower
    I swim in pleasure; if it prove
    Disdain, that torrent will devour
    My vulture-hopes; and he's possessed Of heaven, that's but from hell released. Then crown my joys, or cure my pain; Give me more love, or more disdain.

      Thomas Carew (pronounced Carey) was educated at Oxford and studied law at the Inner Temple.
      He began his career as a diplomatic secretary, first of all to Sir Dudley Carleton (Ambassador to Venice and later the Netherlands) and then to Sir Edward Herbert (Ambassador to France). He was eventually appointed to an office at the court of King Charles I, where he was to become much admired for his poetical talent.
      He modelled his style on Ben Jonson and John Donne and wrote mainly love poetry such as The Rapture and some epitaphs. He also wrote a masque
