Ph.D. University of California, Riverside, 1970 RESEARCH INTERESTS: Cellular and molecular mechanisms of memory
I have always loved mystery stories, especially "procedurals," which focus on the clever strategies and nifty tools used to solve particularly challenging puzzles. The mystery that has preoccupied most of my professional life centers on a deceptively simple question: How is it that we remember some things for a few seconds and others things for a lifetime? Said another way: What must go on in our brains to accomplish the seemingly effortless but actually quite remarkable tasks involved in storing different forms of memory? In my laboratory we explore these questions at a mechanistic level in a rather simple animal, the marine mollusc Aplysia . We use Aplysia because its nervous system affords significant advantages for identifying synaptic, biophysical, and molecular changes underlying learning and memory. In our experiments we use multiple levels of analysis: behavioral, cellular (current, voltage, and whole-cell patch clamp), molecular (analysis of second messenger systems, growth factors, and specific genes implicated in learning), structural (light and electron microscopy coupled with immunocytochemistry), and computational (quantitative analysis of single cells and small network interactions). Currently we have three parallel research programs:
In the first program we study the synaptic and molecular steps involved in the transition from one stage of memory to another (e.g., from short-term lasting minutes, to intermediate-term lasting hours, to long-term lasting days and weeks). We have found that each stage can be distinguished by its distinctive underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms.

Thomas Carew
Thomas Carew was the son of a well-connected official and was educated at Merton College, Oxford and the Middle Temple in London. He worked as a diplomatic secretary in Italy, Holland and France, and soon gained a reputation as a poet.
His talent secured him a place at court, and he was privileged to serve at Charles I's table. In 1634 his masque Coelum Britannicum was performed before the King. His poems, like those of other gentlemen of the era, were not published in his own lifetime but hand-written copies were circulated among his friends. These included Ben Jonson and John Donne, who both exercised a strong influence on Carew's poetry; in his Elegy Carew proclaims Donne 'the universal monarchy of wit'. Another poet he admired greatly was the Italian Giambattista Marino, whose wit and extravagant lifestyle resembled Carew's own.
Though he never achieved the stature of Donne or Johnson, Carew was an elegant writer whose contribution to literature was typical of the stylish Cavalier school. A collected edition of his poems appeared shortly after his death.

He commenced a career as a diplomatic secretary, first to Sir Dudley Carleton (ambassador to Venice and later the Netherlands) and then to Sir Edward Herbert (ambassador to France). He was then appointed to an office at the court of King Charles I, where he was much admired for poetical works. He modelled his style on Ben Jonson and John Donne and wrote principally love poetry such as The Rapture and some epitaphs. He also wrote a masque, Coelum Britannicum , which was performed for the King and an elegy on Donne Song

Another Epitaph
THIS little vault, this narrow room,
Of Love and Beauty is the tomb;
The dawning beam, that 'gan to clear
Our clouded sky, lies darken'd here,
For ever set to us: by Death
Sent to enflame the World Beneath.
'Twas but a bud, yet did contain
More sweetness than shall spring again;
A budding Star, that might have grown
Into a Sun when it had blown.
This hopeful Beauty did create New life in Love's declining state; But now his empire ends, and we From fire and wounding darts are free; His brand, his bow, let no man fear: The flames, the arrows, all lie here. Thomas Carew
Thomas Carew ?) was an English poet He was the son of Sir Matthew Carew, master in chancery, and his wife, Alice Ingpenny, widow of Sir John Rivers, Lord Mayor of London . The poet was probably the third of the eleven children of his parents, and was born at West Wickham in Kent , in the early part of 1595; he was thirteen years old in June 1608, when he matriculated at Merton College, Oxford . He took his degree of B.A. early in 1611, and proceeded to study at the Middle Temple . Two years later his father complained to Sir Dudley Carleton that he was not doing well. He was therefore sent to Italy , as a member of Sir Dudley's household, and when the ambassador returned from Venice, he seems to have kept Thomas Carew with him, for he was working as secretary to Carleton, at the Hague , early in 1616. However, he was dismissed in the autumn of that year for levity and slander ; he had great difficulty in finding another job. In August 1618 his father died, and Carew entered the service of Edward Herbert, Baron Herbert of Cherbury

ASK me no more where Jove bestows,
When June is past, the fading rose;
These flowers, as in their causes, sleep. Ask me no more whither do stray
The golden atoms of the day;
For in pure love heaven did prepare
Those powders to enrich your hair. Ask me no more whither doth haste
The nightingale when May is past;
For in your sweet dividing throat
She winters and keeps warm her note.
That downwards fall in dead of night;
For in your eyes they sit, and there Ask me no more if east or west The Ph nix builds her spicy nest; For unto you at last she flies, And in your fragrant bosom dies.
Persuasions to Joy: a Song
IF the quick spirits in your eye Now languish and anon must die; If every sweet and every grace Must fly from that forsaken face; Then, Celia, let us reap our joys Ere Time such goodly fruit destroys. Or if that golden fleece must grow If those bright suns must know no shade, Nor your fresh beauties ever fade; Then fear not, Celia, to bestow Thus either Time his sickle brings In vain, or else in vain his wings.
