Orson Scott Card is the multi-award winning and bestselling author of a number of ground-breaking SFF novels. Ender's Game is his first Young Adult cross-over novel in the UK. Nobody had ever won the Hugo and Nebula awards for a novel and its sequel, two years in a row, until Orson Scott Card received them for Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead , in 1986 and 1987. But Orson Scott Card's experience is not limited to one genre or form of storytelling. His works have been translated into many languages, including Catalan, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovakian, Spanish, and Swedish. A dozen of Card's plays have been produced in regional theatre, including the musical Barefoot to Zion (written in collaboration with his composer brother, Arlen L. Card), which played to sold-out houses in Utah as part of the Mormon Church's celebration of the sesquicentennial of the entry of the pioneers into Salt Lake Valley. His historical novel, Saints, has been an underground hit for several years, and Card has written hundreds of audio plays and a dozen scripts for animated video plays for the family market. Meanwhile, Ender's Game is being developed for film by Robert Chartoff, co-producer of The Right Stuff, Raging Bull, and the Rocky series, with Card writing the screenplay. Born in Richland, Washington, Card grew up in California, Arizona, and Utah. He lived in Brazil for two years as an unpaid missionary for the Mormon Church. He received degrees from Brigham Young University (1975) and the University of Utah (1981). He currently lives in Greensboro, North Carolina. He and his wife, Kristine, are the parents of five children: Geoffrey, Emily, Charles, Zina Margaret, and Erin Louisa (named for Chaucer, Bronte and Dickinson, Dickens, Mitchell, and Alcott, respectively).

By Donna Minkowitz I t was the most unpleasant interview I've ever done. And one of the most instructive. Science-fiction writer Orson Scott Card wrote one of my favorite books of all time. So when he came out with a sequel, I was delirious with the desire to interview him. "Ender's Game," which won the Hugo and Nebula awards in 1985, is the best book I have ever read about violence. Who would have thought it would result in an interview in which I wanted to throttle the author? "Ender's Game" is also about loving your enemies, a goal so important to me that I wrote a book about it myself. How could I guess that interviewing the author would make me question that entire project? A strangely empathic novel about 6-year-olds forced to be military commanders, "Ender's Game" brought together a fan base that might reasonably be expected to be at one another's throats (in some cases literally): progressives, children and soldiers. It was cherished by middle-schoolers and adults harrowed by child abuse; it was passed around by Gulf War bomb-droppers and used as a text by the Marines. And as for me, well, I'm a Jewish lesbian radical who wrote a book about what I have in common with the Christian right, so Card's paradoxes are right up my alley.

New from PHOBOS BOOKS Counterfeit Kings by Adam Connell PHOBOS BOOKS proudly introduces a revolutionary new science fiction novel by debut author Adam Connell. And make no mistake, Counterfeit Kings is the genuine article. In the tradition of science fiction pioneers Alfred Bester and Dan Simmons, Adam Connell’s Counterfeit Kings is a gritty exploration of a dangerous future peopled with brutal heroes and sympathetic villains. The “struggle for identity and self-sacrifice are just a few of the powerful stories beneath an action-packed surface plot that provokes as it dazzles,” says Publishers Weekly . “Featuring shattered characters whose souls are as dirtied as their deteriorated surroundings, Connell's novel boldly challenges the rigid, moral conservatism so often found in traditional space opera, and is sure to both please and anger readers of this particular subgenre.” Connell's unrepentantly visceral style hits readers like an intellectual bullet to the gut. Civilization Watch
First appeared in print in The Rhinoceros Times , Greensboro, NC By Orson Scott Card February 15, 2004 Homosexual "Marriage" and Civilization A little dialogue from Lewis Carroll: "When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in a rather scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean neither more nor less." "The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things." "The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master that's all." The Massachusetts Supreme Court has not yet declared that "day" shall now be construed to include that which was formerly known as "night," but it might as well. By declaring that homosexual couples are denied their constitutional rights by being forbidden to "marry," it is treading on the same ground. Do you want to know whose constitutional rights are being violated? Everybody's. Because no constitution in the United States has ever granted the courts the right to make vast, sweeping changes in the law to reform society. Regardless of their opinion of homosexual "marriage," every American who believes in democracy should be outraged that any court should take it upon itself to dictate such a social innovation without recourse to democratic process.
