Capote gained international fame with his "nonfiction novel" IN COLD BLOOD (1966), an account of a real life crime in which an entire family was murdered by two sociopaths. The Louisiana-Mississippi-Alabama area provided the setting for much of Capote's fiction. "Until one morning in mid-November of 1959, few Americans - in fact, few Kansans - had ever heard of Holcomb. Like the waters of river, like the motorists on the highway, and like the yellow trains streaking down the Santa Fe tracks, drama, in the shape of exceptional happenings, had never stopped there." (from In Cold Blood In his childhood Capote made friends with Harper Lee, who portrayed him as Dill in her world famous novel To Kill a Mockingbird . "Dill was a curiosity. He wore blue linen shorts that buttoned to his shirt, his hair was snow white and stuck to his head like duckfluff; he was a year my senior but I towered over him. As he told us the old tale his blue eyes would lighten and darken; his laugh was sudden and happy; he habitually pulled at a cowlick in the center of his forehead." Capote started to write stories when he was only eight. He attended the Trinity School and St. John's Academy in New York, and the public schools of Greenwich, Connecticut, but ended his formal schooling at the age of seventeen. He found work at the

"Failure is the condiment that gives success its flavor."Capote T hroughout his career, Truman Capote remained one of America's most controversial and colorful authors, combining literary genius with a penchant for the glittering world of high society. Though he wrote only a handful of books, his prose styling was impeccable, and his insight into the psychology of human desire was extraordinary. His flamboyant and well-documented lifestyle has often overshadowed his gifts as a writer, but over time Capote's work will outlive the celebrity. Born in New Orleans in 1924, Capote was abandoned by his mother and raised by his elderly aunts and cousins in Monroeville, Alabama. As a child he lived a solitary and lonely existence, turning to writing for solace. Of his early days Capote related, "I began writing really sort of seriously when I was about eleven. I say seriously in the sense that like other kids go home and practice the violin or the piano or whatever, I used to go home from school every day and I would write for about three hours. I was obsessed by it." In his mid-teens, Capote was sent to New York to live with his mother and her new husband. Disoriented by life in the city, he dropped out of school, and at age seventeen, got a job with THE NEW YORKER magazine. Within a few years he was writing regularly for an assortment of publications. One of his stories, "Miriam," attracted the attention of publisher Bennett Cerf, who signed the young writer to a contract with Random House. Capote's first book, OTHER VOICES, OTHER ROOMS, was published in 1948. OTHER VOICES, OTHER ROOMS received instant notoriety for its fine prose, its frank discussion of homosexual themes, and, perhaps most of all, for its erotically suggestive cover photograph of Capote himself.

In Cold Blood
While Capote began as a novelist, his journalistic ability gave him a voice as a writer. His chilling recreation of the Clutter murder, investigation, and dispensation remains a classic example of Literary Nonfiction. In spite of his protestations, some discrepancies with facts has been questioned. Yet the time and effort of both research and writing, in addition to waiting for the killers' execution, remain a testimony to his skill. In Cold Blood was the blockbuster which established Capote as a member of the literati as well as helping to start the writing now labelled as Literary Nonfiction. Works By Truman Capote:

Reading George Plimpton's new book on Truman Capote Truman Capote, In Which Various Friends, Enemies, Acquaintances, and Detractors Recall His Turbulent Career feels like being at a fabulous cocktail party, where the champagne is flowing and the gossip is juicy. Truman brought together the worlds of literature, politics, money, art, fashion, media, and film; in short, he was a locus of celebrity. Written as an "oral biography," the book is about as much fun as one can have between the pages of a book.
For this issue of Bold Type, we feature Truman Capote's Black and White Ball. An excerpt describes what it was like to have attended, told by those envied few who were invited. Truman Capote wurde am 30. September 1925 in New Orleans geboren. August 1984 in Los Angeles.

To me, the greatest pleasure of writing is not what it's about, but the inner music that words make. Writing has laws of perspective, of light and shade just as painting does, or music. If you are born knowing them, fine. If not, learn them. Then rearrange the rules to suit yourself. Failure is the condiment that gives success its flavor. I don't care what anybody says about me as long as it isn't true.

Monroeville, Alabama
The best-selling, Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, "To Kill a Mockingbird," with its memorable characters - Atticus Finch, Scout, Jem, Dill and Boo Radley - are familiar to many in our culture. The book's author, Harper Lee, is a native of the beautiful Southern town of Monroeville, Alabama.
The beautiful old Courthouse on the town square, which now houses the Monroe County Heritage Museums, served as a model for the famed courtroom scene from the book.
When movie rights were acquired, the director, film crew and Gregory Peck (who played Atticus in the movie) made trips to this quaint little town in hopes of filming here. However, Monroeville had changed from the 1930s and court was still being held in the courthouse. Instead, they photographed and shot footage of the courthouse and the town in order to recreate the setting in Hollywood.

Capote, Truman (1924-1984) Truman Capote's fiction and autobiographical works helped establish what might be called the quintessential homosexual writing style of the 1950s and 1960s. Capote was born Truman Steckfus Persons on September 30, 1924, in New Orleans. As his biographer, Gerald Clarke, reports, Capote's parents were mismatched, and Capote began a childhood in Monroeville, Alabama, with a batch of eccentric relatives he would later immortalize in his writing. Sponsor Message.
His story "Miriam," published in Mademoiselle in 1945, launched Capote, whose reputation was further enhanced by the publication of "A Tree of Night" in Harper's Bazaar that same year. Capote's career after that was one of triumph and sorrow, with many feeling that he peaked with In Cold Blood, published as a book in 1966 after publication in The New Yorker . Although Capote did produce some good writing in the following years, alcoholism and other problems ruined both his art and life, and he died on August 25, 1984, just before turning sixty.
