In his work Camus presented an absurd and seemingly unreasonable world in which some people futilely struggle to find meaning and rationality while others simply refuse to care. For example, the main character of The Stranger (1942) kills a man on a beach for no reason and accepts his arrest and punishment with dispassion. In contrast, in The Plague (1947), Camus introduces characters who act with courage in the face of absurdity. Albert Camus (born: November 7, 1913 in Mondovi, Algeria; died: January 4, 1960) earned a worldwide reputation as a novelist and essayist and won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1957. Through his writings, and in some measure against his will, he became the leading moral voice of his generation during the 1950s. Camus was killed in an automobile accident near Sens, France in 1960, and is buried in the cemetary at Lourmarin in Provence. More information available at:

The incomplete manuscript of The First Man , the autobiographical novel that Camus was working on at his death, was found in the mud at the accident site and published by his daughter in 1995. Camus hoped that it would be his masterpiece and some critics think it is, even unfinished. Albert Camus, The Outsider Camus' first and most famous novel L'Etranger , translated as The Stranger , or The Outsider , was published on May 19th, 1942, the same year as the movie Casablanca was released. Camus, like Rick, helped with the Resistance movement, and many photographs show him looking like Humphrey Bogart; his book became a cult-classic too, and the best-selling French novel of the 20th century.

77. Albert Camus
Review of the biography by Olivier Todd.
http://www.pro-net.co.uk/home/brendan/Camus.htm
Albert Camus: A Life
Unlike his intellectual peers and near contemporaries, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, our knowledge of Albert Camus's life is remarkably scanty. In Sartre and de Beauvoir's case, a seemingly endless stream of full-length biographies, letters and intimate memoirs have re-inforced their intellectual pre-eminence, and ensured their place in the popular imagination as cultural icons. By contrast, most people know only three, somewhat disparate and incongruous, facts about Albert Camus, all of them gleaned from the front end-papers of the Penguin translations of his books: namely, that he played in goal for an Algerian football team, that he was the youngest winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, and that he was killed in a car crash in 1960.
Yet Camus's life deserves to be better known, not so much because a knowledge of the life can explain the work, or even make it easier to understand, but rather it gives his ideas a cultural context, and, more importantly, a human image on which to hang them. Such images are vital - it could be argued that the famous picture of Sartre, handing out leaflets during the 1968 student demonstrations, planted him and what he stood for more firmly in the public imagination than his writings ever could.
It is one of the strengths of Olivier Todd's biography, which was published in France last year to overwhelming critical acclaim, that it provides us with the clearest and most comprehensive portrait of Camus to date - at last it has become possible not only to see what Camus was like as a human being, but also to begin to construct an iconic image of Camus that embodies his intellectual and philosophical ideas.

Author: Camus, Albert
Date and Place of birth:
b. Nov. 7, 1913, Mondovi, Algeria d. Jan. 4, 1960, Villeblerin, France Life and Works:
French novelist, essayist, and playwright. Albert Camus (1913-1960) was a representative of non-metropolitan French literature. His origin in Algeria and his experiences there in the thirties were dominating influences in his thought and work. Less than a year after Camus was born, his father, an impoverished worker of Alsatian origin, was killed in World War I during the First Battle of the Marne. His mother, of Spanish descent, worked as a charwoman to support her family. Camus and his elder brother Lucien moved with their mother to a working-class district of Algiers, where all three lived, together with the maternal grandmother and a paralyzed uncle, in a two-room apartment. In primary school, Camus found a teacher, Louis Germain, who recognized the young boy's intellectual potential and encouraged him in his studies. In 1947 Camus retired from political journalism and, besides writing his fiction and essays, was very active in the theatre as producer and playwright. He also adapted plays by Calderon, Lope de Vega, Dino Buzzati, and

Insight on the News
March 2, 1998 by Roger Kaplan
Camus was not a great political thinker or a brilliant writer, but he had a passion for justice and freedom and a horror of extreme solutions, which led him to oppose independence for his homeland. Born in 1913, Albert Camus was orphaned by the century's original catastrophe when his father was killed during the early weeks of World War I. He and his brother received stipends that enabled them to stay in school beyond the primary grades, and Camus was admitted to a
